A Girl Named Dara Kindle Edition
"The writing lands somewhere between waking dream and polaroid glimpse into post-adolescence." - Jonas Ball, Writer, Director of "WALNUTS, the Movie."
When Jeff Newcastle meets Dara, a beautiful Belarusian girl, on the first day of poetry class at UCLA, he imagines he’s stumbled onto the perfect college romance. Unfortunately, his fixation on Dara’s beauty prevents him from seeing the truth about her tragic life.
Doubting a normal relationship could ever be possible, Dara pulls some mysterious strings to redirect Jeff’s affection toward Carey, a sweet and kindhearted coed in Jeff’s circle of friends.
Jeff’s romance with Carey blossoms steadily until he’s awakened by a late-night phone call and summoned by a man’s voice to a large estate in the Hollywood Hills. It is here where Jeff finds that a bruised and bloodied Dara has locked herself in an upstairs bathroom.
Jeff does his best to pull Dara immediately out of danger, but he soon realizes it is only the beginning of his problems. Jeff must find a way to save Dara without falling deeper into her chaotic world or sacrificing his budding relationship with Carey.

About the author

Tom lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wonderful wife, his amazing daughter, and their cute little dog.
Tom spent his early twenties as an aspiring playwright putting up shows on small stages around Los Angeles. The responsibility of adulthood came calling and Tom spent the next two decades building his career in the tech industry, but he just couldn't shake the writing bug. So here we are today.
Tom writes stories about very recognizable, imperfect people that face steadily growing challenges. These people are either forced to change or they falter under the weight of refusing to change. Tom's influences are Tennessee Williams, Sandra Cisneros, and Haruki Murakami.
A Girl Named Dara is Tom's first novel, published in August of 2021. Sawtelle Gemini is his second novel, published in February of 2024.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2023"A Girl Named Dara" by Tom Flynn is a remarkable novel that takes readers on a poignant journey through the tangled web of college romance and the complexities of human relationships. Set in the vibrant backdrop of UCLA in the 1990s, this book captures the essence of that era with authenticity, while also delving into the timeless themes of love, tragedy, and self-discovery.
The story centers around Jeff Newcastle, an ordinary young man whose life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Dara, a beautiful and enigmatic Belarusian girl, during their first poetry class. Jeff is instantly captivated by Dara's ethereal beauty, believing he has stumbled upon the perfect romance. However, as the narrative unfolds, Flynn skillfully peels back the layers, revealing the hidden depths of Dara's tragic past.
One of the book's unique strengths lies in its realistic portrayal of college life in the 1990s. Flynn seamlessly weaves in the cultural markers of the time, paying particular attention to the music of the era, which adds a nostalgic and immersive quality to the narrative. This attention to detail not only enhances the overall atmosphere of the story but also allows readers to feel fully immersed in the setting.
Character development is another notable aspect of "A Girl Named Dara." Flynn dedicates considerable time to exploring the inner lives of the characters, enabling readers to develop a genuine connection with them. Through their triumphs and struggles, joys and sorrows, we witness the profound growth and transformation of Jeff and Dara, as well as the complexities of their evolving relationship. The richly developed characters and their interwoven connections bring an emotional depth to the story that lingers long after the final page is turned.
Furthermore, Flynn's writing style is both engaging and evocative, effortlessly painting vivid scenes and evoking a range of emotions. The prose flows smoothly, carrying readers through a narrative that is both compelling and thought-provoking. The author's ability to balance the exploration of profound themes with the engaging plot keeps readers hooked, eagerly turning pages to uncover the next twist in the story.
"A Girl Named Dara" by Tom Flynn is an enthralling novel that skillfully combines a realistic portrayal of college life in the 1990s with a captivating love story. With its memorable characters, immersive setting, and masterful storytelling, this book will resonate with readers who appreciate both the complexities of human relationships and the power of personal growth. Tom Flynn's ability to transport readers to another time and place while exploring timeless themes makes "A Girl Named Dara" a must-read for fans of contemporary fiction.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021I should like to start by thanking Tom Flynn for the ARC he provided me with for an honest review of his book. I gave this 4 1/2 stars but Goodreads does not allow for 1/2 stars so I rounded down rather than up. I thoroughly enjoyed this book right from the first sentence to the very last. My only reason for rounding down rather than up was the ending. While I had a feeling it would end the way it did I was hoping it wouldn't and I have to say it left me a little sad and disappointed. So much of this book will stay with me. The characters who were all so different and so interesting especially A Girl Named Dara. I could foresee nothing but trouble after she took her seat that first day in poetry class. The story was very cleverly plotted out and well written building and building to the end. I would like to congratulate Tom Flynn on a very successful first book and hope that he comes out with something else very soon. I should like to read more of his writing. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy college campus reads, a little romance, a little mystery and suspense. Well done Tom this was a fantastic read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2021As a UCLA Alum myself, I was struck with more than a little nostalgia for Los Angeles, Westwood and the nineties while I was reading this gem of a novel. Mr. Flynn does a lovely job creating a vivid picture of college life at UCLA during this vibrant time. As the title suggests, much of the story revolves around the budding romance between protagonist Jeff Newcastle, a sensitive poetry student and the beautiful coed Dara, an exotic exchange student with a mysterious and dark past. We laugh and perhaps cry while watching Jeff and his circle of quirky friends stumble through their awkward-yet-inevitable social tensions as they grow together into adulthood.
Each character is lovingly drawn, with enough detail and uniqueness that they leap off the page, as if where they really belonged was on a movie screen! Also, whenever the story seems to be following an "ordinary" path, it takes an unexpected turn into extraordinary territory due to Jeff's poetic imagination. What I loved most about this book is how the protagonist walks through life with one foot in grey-and-white reality, while his other foot skates through colorful worlds of imaginary fancy. This tension between reality and fantasy drives the story forward to a surprising resolution at the book's end (no spoilers here!)
I fully recommend reading this delightful novel, and I also recommend keeping YouTube handy while reading, so that you can listen along whenever Jeff Newcastle plays his music. After all, every good movie deserves a great soundtrack!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2023"A Girl Named Dara" by Tom Flynn is a gripping novel that tells a heart-wrenching tale of love, loss, and redemption. The story follows Jeff, a college student who becomes infatuated with Dara, a mysterious and troubled girl from Belarus. As Jeff's relationship with Dara unfolds, he discovers the harsh realities of her past, which threaten to tear apart their relationship.
"A Girl Named Dara" is a powerful exploration of trauma, love, and the lengths we will go to protect those we care about. Flynn's writing is masterful, weaving together a complex narrative that keeps readers engaged until the end. The characters are richly drawn, and their struggles feel authentic and deeply emotional. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a compelling story that will stay with them long after they turn the last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars!
A Girl Named Dara is a thoroughly engaging book, which is not often the case with first-time authors. Flynn has created a world all too familiar for many of us who’ve experienced college life—having that one endearingly quirky professor (and yes, even that one snooty, know-it-all classmate), constantly hanging out with your best friends, going to/playing shows, getting into hilarious nonthreatening accidents, and heavily crushing on a campus heartthrob/babe. Of course there are many others. But for Jeff Newcastle, the main character, his massive crush on the unbelievably gorgeous Dara has spiraled into an obsession that has affected the other areas of his life. Just how much? I’ll leave you to find that out for yourself—a task you’ll no doubt enjoy since Flynn has a way of vividly capturing with words not only the looks but also the emotions of the characters, as well as the places and the general mood back in the good ole ’90s. I must also make mention of the sprinkling of bands and artists referenced throughout the novel, which is one of the highlights for a music junkie like me. I look forward to Flynn’s next novel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid!!
The whole story revolves around the girl named Dara as the title itself throws the direct spotlight on the protagonist with eyes on the cover page which could melt down one into falling for the imaginary version of a girl named Dara. She is the central character and how the story evolves is a very interesting and intellectual work done by the writer.
Rare occasions is the term I would use as on rare occasions, one finds a kind of book which can appear mysterious even before it starts.
Quite happening and sane type life of Dara in actual is a completely upside down one as the lanes she chose to walk upon, will shake down your very expectations. While the book in the beginning stage revolves around the college days and romance which rises in the heart of Jeff, the book also introduces a tale unheard where every alternate page of the book, delivers or unveils a new secret.
Does Dara fell for one right away or keeps Jeff tied up to another one as she fears something absurd would cost her a loss in terms fortune? Dara was unware what the future will behold for her and so did Jeff, whenever he tried to pull the strings to grow closer to Dara. One dark night or I can say the darkest night of her life changed everything.
Maybe through this book, she would indirectly try to explain you what happened with her, but in vain and disappointed , depressed , emotional she gathered all the strength to fight back or maybe she's someone who deserves to be in a pit. What's your vote upon?
Maybe judge it by reading out this rich in class book with a splendid form of narration.
The book will not let you do your chores until you reach out to the epilogue.
