Floating Underwater Kindle Edition
Part psychological fiction and part mystical fiction with a dash of magical realism, Floating Underwater follows a woman's astonishing journey through the extraordinary and, ultimately, to her own self-actualization and power.
Fearful that her lifelong premonitions not only predict the future but can also change its very course, Paloma Leary is devastated when her latest vision predicting a third miscarriage comes true.
Falling into a mystifying world of increasingly bizarre phenomena, including a psychic connection with her mysterious neighbor, out-of-body experiences, and visits from her long-dead mother, Paloma grows desperate for answers. She is also desperate to start a family. But when a life-changing vision reveals a tragic secret from the past, Paloma learns to accept her gifts and embraces a far different future than she ever could have imagined.

Starred Review by BlueInk Review:
"Mystical and magical realism permeate this women's novel, and Amy Harmon fans would embrace Shawn's adept storytelling. The author delivers spot-on dialogue, believable and enchanting characters, and surprising twists. It's easy to imagine the novel as a talked-about book club selection (in fact, there's a list of questions at the book's conclusion).
Poignant and beautiful, Floating Underwater leaves readers yearning for a sequel and another look at these captivating characters." ~~Starred Review by Patricia Moosbrugger for BlueInk Review

"A mystical journey that will take its readers on a whirlwind tour of beautiful imagery and meaningful life adventures, Floating Underwater is the story about a woman named Paloma Leary who learns that she has some very special gifts to share with the world.
Floating Underwater is the perfect book for someone looking for a bit of fantasy thrown into a realistic setting with realistic characters. Written with special attention to little details, this book is relatable, yet very special and is a one-of-a-kind read." ~~Reviewed by Kristi Elizabeth for Manhattan Book Review
From the Author
Floating Underwater was inspired by my own personal history, past work experience, and sheer imagination. Having suffered through two miscarriages myself, I wanted to write about how a character deals with that particular loss. Motivated from my past work as an intern at a psychiatric center, I also wanted to explore what it's like for a daughter when her beloved mother has severe schizophrenia. I added in the narrative element of magical realism and otherworldly events because I believe loss and grief can make our day-to-day reality too difficult to bear without the hope that something magical is just beyond this realm. I created these extraordinary experiences for my protagonist, readers, and for myself to help us all feel as if everything in this crazy, upside-down world (and beyond!) will somehow, someday be okay.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2021Interesting to see how other reviewers say that this book "grabs you" from the start. That is exactly what kept going through my head as I read this book that I could not put down. I have read many books that were absolute page turners, but in some way, this one stands alone. Shawn's acute observations of the natural world we live in, that we so often do not notice, as well as her insightful and perfectly rendered descriptions of the characters inhabiting the story are truly captivating. I sometimes had to remind myself that the words I was reading about her keen observations of the world were not my own. This is a beautifully and skillfully written novel. What is known as a must read - this is it. Just be ready to cancel that whatever you had going later today, so you don't have to put it down. Loved it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021How do you figure out who you are and what you want when everyone around you is trying to give you advice on how you should live?
That’s the question that got me hooked on Paloma’s journey to discover the gifts that she was so intent on pushing back. Hanging out in the comfort zone can be very enticing especially when it’s certain, known and everyone around you is trying to keep you there. But when it’s not enough, you need to break free.
Tracy Shawn has weaved a beautifully, intricate story that dives into fears, exploration of the unknown, and the uncertain path that needs to be taken to get to the truth.
The characters she’s created have such rich, deep inner selves. Their stories, traumas and challenges they keep hidden explain the reasons why they say and act the way they do. Which brings up the question: do we really know the people who are closest to us? Even as I got frustrated with them, I found pieces of myself in them and felt compassion for them as well.
This is a psychological exploration into the dynamics of relationships complicated by personal demons that refuse to stay in the shadows. It’s also a fascinating tale about the sacrifices to break away from the safety and security of what is known to discover yourself.
Definitely worth a read!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2021Floating Underwater has that rare quality of grabbing and holding on to your attention from the first lines.
It is a beautifully written novel which has you experience the feelings and the emotions of the story as you read it.
There are many different story lines that keep it flowing beautifully. It is haunting and sad at times, energetic and uplifting at others, and always exquisitely sensitive.
I believe that there are elements of this story that we can all relate to; as women, as seekers, as friends, as travelers on this journey of life, as family members, as people in intimate relationships, whether we entertain or explore other-worldly experiences or not, whether we have experienced mental illness up close or not.
It is hard to put this novel down, so you’ll want to carve out some time, settle in and read it in one go.
It is worth it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2023“… some places draw more artists, some towns, more musicians; for some reason, Sunflower Beach attracts a number of people with extrasensory perception. It’s a vibrational thing.”
FLOATING UNDERWATER really gave me the feel of floating in water as its magical realism pulled me into its spell. Paloma mourns three miscarriages while also unknowingly mourning a childhood she never really understood. She has visions that are trying to help her, but her gift is too confusing for her to use. With the help of others, who also have the gift, and an openness to the mysteries of life, she gets answers that are as shocking as they are healing. The novel touches on mental illness as well as mystical powers and offers a lovable cast of characters (ninety-something-year-old Tillie being my favorite!) who help Paloma heal into her truth. “If you don’t acknowledge your powers, then you might indeed go insane.” It’s a magical story!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2022Paloma has premonitions but worries she is sinking into mental illness as her mother did. Magical realism is woven into the storyline as Paloma struggles to understand her out of body experiences, premonitions and mysteries of her past. Twist and turns will take the reader to a surprising ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2022I could see the central question of this book immediately. I also wish the characters had been more finely drawn and detailed. Even Paloma, the main character needs fleshing out. Maybe in this 30 minute sit-com age, no one wants to read a detailed metaphysical novel, but I would.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2023I think I ordered this book in my sleep. I don't recall ordering it. But I started reading it because I really enjoy this alone and just let it run its course! What? No matter how many times a woman has miscarried, she gets emergency treatment! There are actually medications that might stop the process, and more importantly, the woman needs medical care. I'm all for suspending disbelief to a point, but let me believe the characters have common sense and navigate in the real world. It strikes me as gauche and cheesy to envision her being a tragic hero, soaring her poor husband emotional pain for another day by going it alone!
Not my cup of tea. Juvenile.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2021Definitely one of my fastest reads in a long time ; couldn't put it down today. This writer has the most exquisite style, creating scenes and characters effortlessly. You feel a part of their entwined lives immediately, aligning with your own challenges in different aspects of life. This novel feels like a beautiful mystery (surprising twists and turns) combined with magical realism in that the author contrasts the depths of mental illness with something deeper, where premonitions and visions come to life even for those that are not afflicted in any way but worry they may in fact be "crazy" until they discover it is a gift. Compassion and hope for any soul facing hardships is what this book brings to mind at the end.
