I loved this book and finished it in two sittings. The major characters are Carmen, a sixtyish widow whose father abandoned her when she was only six years old, and her three adult daughters named Rosina, Violetta, and Leonora (yes, as a tribute to Carmen's love of opera). The story goes back and forth in time from Christmas of 1969 when Carmen last saw her father to Christmas in the current year, but this switch is necessary to understand the backstory of each main character and is not confusing to the reader. The three daughters are hiding huge secrets from their mother and each other, all of which are revealed in a lively and complicated plot that holds quite a few surprises. The author does such a great job of character development that I empathized with Carmen and her daughters' traumas, rather than judging them for their poor choices. I recommend this book highly because Patricia Dixon is a master storyteller who piques your curiosity about this family from the first chapter. Please note that Ms. Dixon mentions her BFF Keri Beevis in this book, who is another fabulous author of psychological mysteries whose works can also be found in Kindle Unlimited.

Coming Home was a very enjoyable book. The characters were well-drawn and likable (most of them, anyway). The plot, albeit highly improbable, was engaging. I was in suspense as I read, eager to see how the numerous plot threads would be resolved.

I gave the book four stars instead of five because of its consistent misuse of commas. It is a credit to the book that I enjoyed and finished it. Usually such a level of erroneous punctuation distracts me and causes me to give up on a book. Here, the plot and characters were strong enough to keep me going.

Christmas novels are usually not my thing, but this is not your usual Christmas novel. Mrs. Dixon has such a way with writing characters, that you really feel like they have become family. I had a few favorite characters, and I'm sure you will, as well. This novel will bring so many emotions to your Christmas season and a few surprises along the way, but the happy tears you will cry are the best! This one is yet another must read by one of my favorite authors!

This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites by her. This is a holiday story that has a twist of suspense and mystery added to it. I enjoyed being pulled into the story by the characters from the beginning. This is a fast paced story that I found to be engaging and hard to put down. It is a story about a family that has secrets that could ruin their Christmas or bring happiness. What happens next you dont want to miss. This is a great story that has twists and turns that left me wanting to know more. I enjoyed the growth of the characters as well as the growth of the plot throughout the story. This is a well written story where the author's use of details made the story feel real. I truly enjoyed this story and highly recommend it.

This book had a lot of promise but to me in the end it just dragged on and was very repetitive. Secrets, betrayals and happiness are all abound in this book so it does touch many emotions, I just felt it fell flat in keeping me hooked since it was so long and drawn out. I did enjoy her other books so there is that.

The premise of the story was good and I would have liked to see how it played out but I just couldn't hang in there. Way too much time was spent rehashing the past of each character, over and over again. I lost interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your average Christmas read!

The opening is a menacing and brilliantly executed recurring nightmare of childhood abandonment. From there the story swings artfully between the various family members as each one grapples with their secret and they wait for the worst to happen, seeing no escape. Tensions rise as Carmen, the mother, hopes for the 'best ever' family Christmas while each daughter approaches their feared cusp. But her children are good people although struggling with poor past choices and it is impossible not to share their desire for a way out of their dilemmas.
This is a story that is expertly woven, with enough darkness to make the light of Christmas shine brightly.
