A man discovers that quitting his job comes with a price—his life—in this breakneck financial thriller from the acclaimed author of the Joe DeMarco series.

With his reputation permanently marred by an insider trading conviction, Jamison Maddox, a young Wall Street broker, reluctantly takes a job doing research for a small company in the sleepy town of Redemption, Illinois.

But when he falls in love with a beautiful and enigmatic colleague, Gillian, Jamison begins to realize that he may be doing illegal work for the company. So when she asks him to run away with her, he agrees wholeheartedly. The two set off across the country, hoping to secure some money and go into hiding. The company is soon on their tails, pursuing them with the single-minded goal of silencing them forever.

If Jamison hadn’t realized how dangerous these people really are, he now realizes they will stop at nothing to protect the company. And he has no idea that his lover, a stunning woman shrouded in mystery, is as dangerous as the people he’s running from.

Praise for Redemption:

“Excellent…Lawson’s meticulous plotting keeps upping the suspense to nearly unbearable levels. This basic plot worked wonders 30 years ago for John Grisham in The Firm; in Lawson’s capable hands it’s once again a winner.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Mike Lawson is really quite a talent . . . I noticed shadows of John Grisham’s The Firm in my reading of Redemption. I hope that this standalone has even just a fraction of the success of that novel. It deserves it.”—Deadly Pleasures

Praise for Mike Lawson:

“Excellent…No surprise, the resourceful Demarco finds ingenious ways to solve all the problems. The author’s felicitous style will keep readers smiling throughout. Lawson remains at the top of his game.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review), on House Privilege

House Privilege is worthy of as many stars as the stargivers are giving this year. And you’d think the award-givers would—after 13 novels featuring Joe DeMarco, one of the genre’s most intrepid and endearing (very) private investigators—heap cheesy trophies and worthy praise on Lawson. Lawson is a natural storyteller. He can craft believable characters and connivances that leave you breathless. House Privilege is a lesson in writing believable prose. Lawson makes it look easy, and that’s what fiction writers all hope they’re doing or aspire to do.”—Durango Telegraph, on House Privilege

“This is a consistently entertaining, well-crafted series. The real mystery here is why Lawson has yet to garner a major award.”—Booklist (starred review), on House Privilege

“Another first-rate novel from Lawson, the thirteenth in his celebrated Joe DeMarco series (following House Witness, 2018), with a clever cliff-hanger ending that will both delight and concern his legion of fans.”—Booklist (starred review), on House Arrest

“Lawson's matter-of-fact tone, walking a fine line between satire and reportage, propels his tale forward…And his final sequence, both blackly comic and ineffably sad, provides the perfect conclusion.”—Kirkus Reviews, on House Arrest

“Lawson [is] a reliably excellent writer . . . As always, Lawson’s plotting is ingenious and his characters memorable.”—Seattle Times, on House Rivals

“What a pleasure to read a book by a writer who gets everything right—the engaging protagonist, the fluid and often funny dialogue, the quick-paced and believable plot . . . Grade: A.”—Cleveland Plain Dealer, on House Odds

“Mike Lawson . . . should be a fixture on the bestseller lists, if not a household name . . . Lawson has a deceptively smooth, low-key style that is perfect for the stories he tells . . . Mike Lawson is the only writer I know who comes close to matching the stories of the great Ross Thomas, the finest thriller writer to ever roll a blank page into an Underwood.”—Strand Magazine, on House Reckoning

“A what-happens-next, edge-of-your-seat thriller, told with the author’s clear prose and storytelling skills . . . [Lawson’s] consistent excellence needs to be more universally acknowledged.”—Deadly Pleasures, on House Blood

“If you've been reading and enjoying Block, Crais, Child, Pelecanos, Winslow, et al, you should also be reading Mike Lawson . . . Mike Lawson is a very fine writer. His plots are devious and intriguing, and his characters are well developed.”—JB Dickey, Seattle Mystery Bookshop, on House Odds

“A great novel from a great author! . . . Equal parts funny, clever and cool, this book will make your heart race and your mind ponder.”—Lisa Gardner, on House Divided

“A compelling story of vengeance. Lawson is a gifted master.”—Rick Mofina, on House Reckoning

Mike Lawson's "Redemption" is a captivating and masterful departure from his renowned de Marco mystery series. As a long-time admirer of Lawson's work, I find his latest novel to be a refreshing and unpretentious masterpiece that exemplifies his clear, concise, and impactful writing style.
Lawson, known for his unvarnished portrayal of Washington D.C., takes a unique turn in "Redemption," exploring the lives of a group of communists in rural America. These characters, forgotten by their leaders and clinging to outdated ideals, are reminiscent of the 1960s hippies, gradually aging into obscurity in their irrelevant neighborhoods. Lawson's narrative is a poignant reflection on political dreams that have aged into dementia and despair, leading some characters toward tragic ends.

What is truly remarkable about "Redemption" is Lawson's ability to humanize all his characters, including the villains. Each character is portrayed as a good person in their own right, adding depth and complexity to the story. This element of humanization brings a sense of relatability and empathy to the narrative, making it not just a story about forgotten ideals but also about the very essence of human nature and its frailties.
The book’s theme of 'beautiful destruction' resonates profoundly, highlighting that nothing unequivocally good emerges from the political machinations in Washington. Yet, Lawson's skillful storytelling and character development make it evident that every individual has their own redeeming qualities, regardless of their political affiliations or actions.

Reading "Redemption" was an absolute delight. It's a novel that Lawson evidently wanted to write, and this passion is palpable in every page. The book’s exploration of aging, relevance, and the gradual shift from fervent political activism to a resigned acceptance of life’s realities is both delightful and heartbreakingly true.
In summary, "Redemption" by Mike Lawson is not just a novel; it's a beautifully crafted piece of literature that speaks volumes about life, politics, and the inevitable passage of time. It's not a must-read for anyone unless you appreciate the importance of the trivial. This book is a testament to Larson's versatility as a writer and his ability to captivate readers with stories that are both delightful and profoundly meaningful.

"Which hand is the peanut in? ". This one has a strange premise. Ultimately, all ends are tied up.
Joe Demarco where have you gone ?

I am a big Lawson fan! I haven’t read a book by him I didn’t enjoy thoroughly…
This reminded me of some of the best Grisham…. I moves at top speed, always in high gear.
I like the change of leads.
In fact I loved Gillian! Lawson is great with these dark mysterious female characters. Gillian here, and Emma (or close to that!) in the DeMarco books
Perfect read for a quiet fall day! You won’t put it down until you’ve finished it!

Not bad, but almost a romance novel with bit of a twist. Aah, a happy ending. His name Jamison, always by his first name in the book. No real edge to the story, no humor. Again, I miss Joe DeMarco, hope we hear from him again.

Surprise after surprise greets you as you read this book. Other spy novels preceding this publication don't plump the depth of Indians and evil seen here. Interesting.

This crime novel is the best I've read in a while!
It starts slowly, but then grabs you. "Redemption" is a small town in Illinois, where a powerful family commits universal crimes that are beyond your imagination.
I'll say no more, except that the ending seemed a little rushed. Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyable.

Set in a Chicago suburb, a gang of ruthless people hire a damaged financier for his ability to analyze companies. What this group cannot see coming is the protagonist's effect on the indeed inbred outfit.

He uses wit, guile experience and luck to take on the organization. An organization that has no morals or boundaries.

It's a cool story. But a little scary with realism and suspense.

Lawton’s Joe DeMarco novels have always been entertaining with DeMarco being a believable but somewhat lazy troubleshooter. “Redemption “ is totally different. It seemingly has ‘a cast of thousands’ and a complicated plot that hides in the shadows. The two main characters, Jamison and Gillium, are two very unlike people. Their roles in the plot are vastly different, but each is trying to escape the situation they are cast into. Like Lawson’s other novels, this is a real page turner that is difficult to put down.
