Fogrunners Wanted:

The most amazing job in the Archipelago!

Adventure, Opportunity, Independence

When Sylvan signs on to help Fogrunner, Bernhard Krummholz, retrieve a packtrain of unruly goats from a distant village, he thinks he knows right where he’s going. But a great memory for places can only take him where he’s been before, and learning to read maps is the key to success in his new navigational life.

When their mission goes wrong, and Krummholz is injured, it’s suddenly up to Sylvan to use all of his skills, old and new, to navigate their way through the perilous slot canyons, braided rivers, and floating bogs of the Foglands!

This new book by Alaska writer and orienteer Jen Jolliff offers entertainment and learning for readers of any age and navigation ability. You'll come away from reading
Fogrunner with an increased understanding of and appreciation for map reading and decision making skills.

Fogrunner is a tale of adventure and growth set in a place where map reading and navigation skills are keys to success. There's more than one route to your destiny. Choose well!

Fogrunner is a fascinating story of navigation and adventure through a surprisingly well built world shrouded in perpetual fog. The author beautifully ties real life orienteering skills into the narrative. Fogrunner will appeal to all who love exploring the outdoors.

I enjoyed this book. The story takes place in a well imagined world full of real danger and adventure.
The book highlights the skills needed orienteer - race with map and compass or be a Navigator, a real Fogrunner - but one need not do this to enjoy the story and characters. A wonderful romp, I recommend it.

This is a great debut novel by the author! In this speculative fiction, she combines elements from orienteering with a coming-of-age story set in a future where travel between communities is restricted by the foglands which must be carefully navigated. While the story as it unfolds teaches some of the techniques used in orienteering, the most powerful theme is how the analytical skills in making good route choices carries over into making good life choices. The author has created a vivid world with engaging characters and I look forward to what I hope are a series of subsequent novels.

I really enjoyed that this book by a new author didn't follow the predictable pattern of so many young adult adventures; there were twists I couldn't have predicted. I hope Jen will write sequels, there is certainly territory left to explore.

This is a beautiful coming-of-age story set in a world shrouded in fog and mystery. I have no background in orienteering or maps, but this story pulled me so fully into the world, that I felt as if I were there on the adventure with Sylvan. Usually, an author excels at one aspect of writing - setting, plot, characters - but each aspect of this book really draws you in. The setting, although it's a completely fictional world, feels real; I can truly imagine myself being in Sylvan's world. The characters are rich and multi-dimensional. And the plot keeps you reading well past time to go to bed. This book should be a best seller. Get it. Read it. Read it out loud to your kids. You'll love it.

This was a great read! I enjoyed being dropped in the middle of a mystical world and that the author didn't feel the need to explain all the details of that world. For folks that aren't passionate about orienteering—don't let that influence your choice to read this book. Maps and compasses play the same role in this book as magic in others. Fans of Ursula K. Leguin and Patrick Rothfuss will enjoy Fogrunner.

My only disappointment was that there weren't some illustrations, especially given the author's artwork. I hope illustrations will be part of the sequel(s)!

Even though I am no longer in the target audience (teen/young adult), I loved this page-turner with its cleverly imagined alternative reality where "islands" of uplands are separated by fog-enshrouded wilderness, which can only be safely traversed by skilled runners who possess great map-reading and compass skills. Adventure and treachery abound - superimposed on Sylvan's coming of age growth and discovery. A great read for anyone with a love of outdoor adventure and fanciful drama.
