Felicity and Damian are broken souls that have much need of each other, tucked away in the bacon and beyond. Her brother in law sent her to Damian for a secluded second chance away from society and within the walls of the castle she found love. It was not an easy journey but wonderfully told. TBE book is not long but we see love grow and justice given and meet the Clyde, who appears in TBE next book. I am looking forward to his story.

This is more a review of the series in general than this book in particular. Ms. Devon is a talented writer but she misuses words occasionally and bends historical fact though she isn’t aware of it.
For example, she talks about how much the hero loves Aristotle’s plays. Aristotle was a philosopher who wrote critiques of the writing process, poetry and playwriting. He himself never wrote plays. Fiction was not his venue.
She really needs to review her history before making such bloopers.

A very sweet story about 2 broken souls who find each other and mend. Felicity is very bold and straightforward, after almost marrying a cad, and finding herself ruined. Damian is broken by an old tragedy. Together, they will heal.

This book held great promise. The brooding, emotionally scarred hero is such a rich trope full of possibilities. But early in the book, the plot had weak points.

First, there should have been a prologue. Given Felicity’s story had been told to some degree in earlier installments in the series, it should have been easy to fashion a compelling prologue that not only set up Felicity’s reasons for being in that carriage, but it would have helped develop her own character. A glimpse into her time on the continent would have helped as well. The book, at only 160 pages (the last 40 were teasers for the author’s other books), would not have been too long for such a prologue. Besides, anyone not having read the first books or who had forgotten the particulars in the time it took for the next to come out was lost from the outset.

Next, it seems the author must have written Elizabeth as a sister at one point, because Damian is referred to as both her nephew and brother. This makes sense as much of the plot seemed rushed.

The most glaring example is how the hero is so full of angst he rushes off to Scotland for weeks and weeks and then when he comes back - friend in tow - he and Felicity become lovers almost immediately. While it’s nice that the reader is not tortured with repetitive angst on the hero’s part, there seemed little attention paid to the potential risks of such an affair and even less to how the hero evolved from an emotionally crippled recluse to an openly infatuated lover. The second, but equally unsettling example, is how the hero one day is a complete emotionally distant enigma and the next he is reading Shakespeare to Felicity while she recovers from a fever. We don’t get the details that make his transition seem plausible.

And while I liked both Elizabeth and Felicity and their unconventional friendship, I did not feel a real connection because the book was just too short. Once Damian came back in the picture, Elizabeth all but disappeared much like she did not even make an appearance at the beginning of the book even though Felicity’s reason for being at the castle was to be her companion.

And this was a theme throughout the book. People only make it into the page if they are entirely necessary to the dialogue. But what makes a story excellent are the details which include people going about their lives in the background. We are told that everyone at the castle is a misfit of sorts. What a missed opportunity not to give the reader a glimpse of them in that capacity.

Despite my disappointment in this installment, I will read the next one.

I’m working my way through this series, and The Beast’s Belle is another great read though not my favorite in the series. For me it loses a star because it lacks some character development for everyone excluding the Duke. Otherwise, it’s a nice beach read and moves the series forward.

Lady Felicity's hired coach has broke down on the way to Hardcastle castle to take a position as a companion to the aunt of the duke. A man comes out of the rain to steal from her. She does not sit there and take it. When he tries to attack her she fights back and is fitting for her life when a huge man comes and saves her. Takes her to the castle and sits with her that night as she has a fever. Then he is gone. The duke has had a very sad life as has Felicity. When he returns they find they are attacked to each other. She is very honest and straight forward as is the duke. Though she is an earl's daughter she has been use to being on her own. Aunt Elizabeth and Felicity get along well together and she feels at home there. She does not feel worthy of marrying the duke but things happen that makes her realize they need each other.

Two people with so much hurt and disillusionment in their lives are thrown together by chance. Can love an understanding heal them?
A more grown up tale than most in this genre and a great read.

I liked this novel, however, there were aspects towards the end that were rather peculiar. It was if the author wasn’t sure on how to end it and rushed to create some challenging obstacles for the hero and heroine. The father and his ultimate demise was justified but how that came about at the end was most peculiar. Initially I found that the hero enjoyed his wallowing in the past a little too much but grateful for the heroine who pulled him out of his self contained misery to be a better person.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice ending
Reviewed in Canada on November 12, 2022
It started off good. I was glued to those first few pages but then I kinda lost the way. Not so fond of this youngest sister. Damien was nice enough but he seemed to waffle back and forth between crotchety beast and sad-eyed savior. Took me longer to get through. I liked seeing the villains suffer for their crimes. It was a nice ending but it almost felt like two stories mashed in one.

It was truly annoying when the characters were muddled. The duke of BLACKTOWER was written as BLACKMORE, and lady elizabeth suddenly has a BROTHER called damian instead a NEPHEW. Fix it.
