The Arrival (Annihilation Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 1,238 ratings

It’s our planet. But it’s their war...

On New Year's eve 2022, unknown flying objects appear over Europe and ignite an inferno of violence among themselves. Debris from one of the spacecraft falls on Athens, turning the city center into a smoking crater.

The destroyed remnant of the former metropolis is declared a restricted zone by NATO forces and sealed off. Amidst the few survivors struggling for food, medicine, and clean water, Nikos takes care of his girlfriend Maria, only to soon find out that to avert a creeping death, there is only one way out of the hell of Athens—the wreckage of the alien ship.

At the same time, a special forces team is sent on an impossible mission, as NATO's European Command has evidence that another spaceship has landed in the jungles of Africa and its Alien crew appears to still be alive...

Don't miss Bestseller Joshua T. Calvert's next Science Fiction epic. A story of survival, invasion, and war that's perfect for fans of Jay Allan, Joshua Dalzelle, and S.M. Anderson.

Joshua T. Calvert is an award-winning author whose books have sold more than one million copies. He has traveled the world—on foot, by Jeep, by bicycle, by motorcycle, and lots of other ways besides. As you might imagine, he’s seen many things most people never see – including an Iranian prison cell, from the inside! In Kyrgyzstan, he fared slightly better, narrowly avoiding being kidnapped for ransom. Skydiver, scuba diver, martial artist, adventurer – his goal is to experience everything possible, and then make it real to you in his books. And he’s made a good run of it so far: in the Philippines, he did police training on multiple types of firearms (despite being no fan of guns himself); dove in Asian waters among sharks and shipwrecks; and patrolled with Sumatran jungle rangers.

That’s what defines Calvert’s approach to method writing: pushing himself beyond his own limits, to experience first-hand what his characters experience, to make your immersion in his stories as deep as it can be.

For Ganymede Rises, after a slight detour with some smugglers in the deserts of Uzbekistan and the steppes of Mongolia, he traveled by dogsled and snowshoe to the Arctic Circle to experience first-hand what it’s like to be utterly isolated in the coldest place on Earth. For his book The Fossil, he sat with professional pilots in flight simulators for Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft to learn what it’s like to fly a passenger jet. His latest adventure: a parabolic flight with European Space Agency astronauts, to experience zero-gravity. All so he can describe it to you, in his own words.

One of the better sci-fi stories I’ve read lately. Looking forward to the next book in the series. Give it try you won’t be disappointed.

The Aliens arrive right away. That is my only spoiler. This is a story more about people and the human condition towards each other. A well written book. I am not that big of a fan of this type of genre but looking for something different to read I stumbled on this story and decided to read it. I enjoyed the story and finished the book unlike the last two I gave a chance on. This one held my interest till the end and I enjoyed following the characters. I will be giving the other books in the series a chance also.
As you can tell I am not a professional reviewer. I was not asked by the author to write a review. I am just a plain old Kindle reader.
The reason for the 4 star rating was only for the jumps in the story to future parts in the story that would give me pause to go back to see what I missed only to find out I didn't miss anything but I was placed a few weeks or months into the story without being directed there till later in the chapter.
All in all a great read. Go for it. I think you will enjoy this story.

So glad I found this series. Tht Arrival is really excellent science fiction. Really looking forward to the other books in this series. I was reading two other book series, but I gave them up after starting this book. Excellent writing and a great story.

Earth is the battle ground for two warring alien spices, with chunks of debris from their skirmishes falling to Earth. Interesting premise, curious to see how it developes over the next two books in the series.

Typical guys books, but as woman that loves this type of book, it was pretty good. Nikos was very lucky and traveled through I guess some type of wormhole to another side of the planet via the "Tear" ship. Seeing an actual alien must have blown their minds. Next remains to be seen!

Unlike any other military sci-fi I've read! Alien action comes quickly but it's not just another ho-hum "take over the world and enslave the humans" kind of story. Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. I've already bought the 2nd book to start it now.

I loved the book, some parts were stressful to work through, fortunately my antidepressants kept me going. Jacek is an unlikely hero but definitely a person with extraordinary courage and leadership abilities, to the extent that the KSK special forces respected his plans.

As I have said, what a story. The main characters are all beyond tough and committed to their mission and comrades, even the civilian proved his gumption by carrying Jacek out of an
incredible difficult and life threatening situation, despite his right arms' bicep tendon being torn, rendering the arm useless. I cannot wait for the rest of the story to unfold.

Buena lectura con algo de confucion en las escenas sobre todo de ataque, pero fuera de eso esta bien, nadamas que si da hueva leer el que sigue, como que ese misterio de lo que pasaria con los personajes pues ya se resolvio en este libro.

It’s quite difficult for me to put into words just how badly written this book is.
Apologies Calvert.
All I can say is that I read it all hoping it would get better and it didn’t. It struggled to…become…anything!
Instead it was a hodge podge of running, fighting and struggle with minimal storylines that went nowhere.
Glad it was cheap.

It seems like we've been there before. Aliens on Earth, but some new twists. In the end we are left wondering.
