#14 AMAZON BESTSELLER! As seen on The Joe Rogan Experience and The Glenn Beck Program.

Critical Race Theory is one of the hottest and most controversial topics in the world today, but what is it, really? Rightly understood, Critical Race Theory is a reinvention of an older, terrible idea, Marxism, using race "as the central construct for understanding inequality" in place of economic class. That is, Critical Race Theory is Race Marxism. The evidence of this claim is so overwhelming upon even casual examination that it is a shock that it isn't immediately plain to everyone who encounters it. Therefore, this book by James Lindsay, the leading investigator of Critical Race Theory, serves less to make the case that Critical Race Theory is Race Marxism and more to serve as a long permission slip to the public to call Critical Race Theory what it plainly is.

Race Marxism exists to tell the truth about Critical Race Theory in unprecedented clarity and depth. Across its six weighty chapters, Lindsay explains what Critical Race Theory is, what it believes, where it comes from, how it operates, and what we can do about it now that we know what we're dealing with. It exposes Critical Race Theory for what it is by ranging widely across its own literature and a survey of some of the darkest philosophical currents of the last three hundred years in Western thought. Readers will come away understanding Critical Race Theory and be able to speak the truth about it with authority: Critical Race Theory is Race Marxism, and, like all Marxist Theories before it, it will not work this time.

James Lindsay is an author, internationally recognized speaker, and the founder and president of New Discourses. He is best known for his relentless criticism of "Woke" ideology, the now-famous Grievance Studies Affair, and the bestselling book Cynical Theories, which has been translated into over a dozen languages. In addition to writing and speaking, Lindsay is the voice of the New Discourses Podcast and has been a guest on prominent media outlets including The Joe Rogan Experience, Glenn Beck, Fox News, and NPR.

James Lindsay is THE authority on critical theories. This book is a culmination of many years spent dealing with the contemporary revival of Marxist ideas. Kudos to Lindsay for standing up to an unbelievable pressure from the political and academic far left!

Take this advice, and then read this book. Like many, I hadn’t heard about CRT before the 2020 summer of riots, after which I heard the term everywhere. Also like many others, I had no idea what CRT stood for other than calling everything racist and finding racism in the most mundane places like classical orchestras, dogs, and gardening. (Seriously!) After reading this book, I now know more about the theory, its roots, and its aims, and I can coherently argue why it should be vigorously opposed and rooted out of any institution that we want to save from this toxic, divisive ideology.

I appreciate the time Lindsay put into truly understanding CRT’s origins and aims. He is impressively conversant with the writings of related theorists such as Herbert Marcuse, Karl Marx, and Kimberle Crenshaw and quotes many informative passages. I am also grateful that he took to the time to read all that rubbish, so I didn’t have to!

The book ends with some practical ideas for resisting CRT, which anyone can use. These practical ideas range from speaking out and telling the truth to fortifying shared cultural and ethical values. He also offers a larger, more significant tactic to fight it - officially labeling it as a religion - so we can use the Establishment Clause to resist it. While I am not sure how effective this approach would be, it is an interesting one and incited quite a bit of reflection and discussion.

The only thing this book is lacking is an index. It is hard to find some of the notable passages without one. Next time, I hope the publisher adds one.

This book is a brilliant masterpiece, which has clearly been produced with an exemplary level of rigorous academic analysis of the existing key publications by the historical figures that had significantly shaped the Critical Social Justice movement. The author's observations carefully refer to the existing evidence, as it explains his angle, well tempered with reason, as it delves into the practical reality of our times. The book succeeds in providing a compelling case, particularly well-referenced with quoted excerpts from the publications of the movement's key figures. Some interesting quoted statements and excerpts -- often nebulous in verbiage -- are elucidated well by the author with a moderated demonstration of meanings, and clear depictions central to the foundation of this thing that is often named Critical Social Justice. This book is a "piece of gold" to behold, if you are the kind of person who is not afraid to play a bit of "Devil's Advocate" in order to "go down a rabbit hole" to get your hands on unadulterated truthful reality.

Lindsay’s lectures and podcasts (New Discourses) are an excellent resource for understanding the current “Woke” culture.

But the breadth and depth of his lectures/podcasts can be intimidating if you’re not already well read on several related topics. So, where should one start? How to get a good 1000 foot view of the “forest” before diving into the specifics of the “trees”?

Race Marxism is that starting place!

Lindsay’s Race Marxism starts w/ a working definition of woke and then continues to unpack its meaning, refining it and exposing a deeper hidden purpose. His approach is like that of pealing an onion, beginning w/ the big picture outer layer and then w/ each additional chapter digging into the origins of Woke ideology.

The result is a stepwise look into the past. We can see Wokism didn’t just explode onto the current scene out of nowhere, but is rooted in a repackaged Utopianism (ie Marxism) that promises this new generation a perfected world but leaving only chaos in its historical wake.

There is no guise in which racism is acceptable. There is no system in which communism does not steal the soul of those that it oppresses. The combination of these two horrible philosophies is critical race theory. Critical race theory has no place in our society. It must be expunged from our education system and our legal system. Critical race theorists seek to enact Stalin's violence using Hitler's morals.

James Lindsay’s deep dive into the scourge of Marxism, and its recent manifestation, Critical Race Theory, is excellent! I’ve had the benefit of listening to all his New Discourses podcasts and reading his book written with Helen Pluckrose, and found his treatment of CRT in this book to be even more clear and actionable than his prior work.
While this book is challenging in that it is scholarly and requires understanding the bases for his conclusions and prescriptions, it’s well worth the time required to work through it.
The last chapter would be worth reading alone, but when approached after reading the clear evidence of what CRT is and how it developed, it gave me a very hopeful confidence that once again Marxism will fail to gain a solid foothold in the US and other liberal democratic republics.
It’s a call to action that we have to call CRT what it is, Race Marxism, and banish it from our institutions. Lindsay has inspired me to do my part in this important work.

Possibly one of the most unassuming and approachable books about the subject of CRT, its philosophical underpinnings, its iterations through the years and its forceful and "viral" spread. The author is not messing around or beating around the bush, either. He drives his thesis home starting on the first page of the introduction. The pages and chapters that follows he makes the case *based on the overabundance of evidence* that CRT is essentially a modern and specious version of original Marxism (which proponents of post-modern critical theories call "vulgar Marxism"). He goes in detail about what the true goal of CRT is and how it is accomplishing it. He also presents the case about the dangers and ethical hazards such "theories" pose to freedom.

If you're a person looking for nuance and knowledge in the subject, I could not find a more apt piece of literature to satiate your thirst for truth on this very delicate subject that permeates our society, the news we watch and read, and politics around it.

Very well written, although being philosophically dense here and there, it’s the most excellent and appropriate overview of CRT I have ever read, without the codified language.

4.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on May 11, 2022

古典的マルクス主義、Vulgar marxism(粗野なマルクス主義), neo-marxism(新マルクス主義)、cultural marxism(文化マルクス主義), identity marxism(アイデンティティ・マルクス主義)という新手の言葉が頻出するのだ。
