The secret to leading growth is your mindset

Snowflake CEO Frank Slootman is one of the tech world's most accomplished executives in enterprise growth, having led Snowflake to the largest software IPO ever after leading ServiceNow and Data Domain to exponential growth and the public market before that. In Amp It Up: Leading for Hypergrowth by Raising Expectations, Increasing Urgency, and Elevating Intensity, he shares his leadership approach for the first time.

Amp It Up delivers an authoritative look at what it takes to transform an organization for maximum growth and scale. Slootman shows that most leaders have significant room to improve their organization's performance without making expensive changes to their talent, structure, or fundamental business model—and they don’t need to bring in an army of consultants to do it. What they do need is to align people around what matters and execute with urgency and intensity every day.

Leading for unprecedented growth means declaring war on mediocrity, breaking the status quo, and making conflicted choices daily, all with a relentless focus on the mission. Amp It Up provides the first principles to guide that change, and the tactical advice for organizing a company around them.

Perfect for executives, entrepreneurs, founders, managers, and leaders of all kinds, Amp It Up is a must-read resource for anyone who seeks to unleash the growth potential of a company and scale it to heights they never thought possible.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In my 30+ year experience as a venture investor I have never seen anyone rival Frank’s operating know-how. With Frank, it all starts and ends with hardcore and focused execution. 'Get comfortable with being uncomfortable', 'hope is not a strategy', and 'the best way to build a brand is to get more customers' are some of the mantras by which Frank has taught us to live. There is no doubt that he has made many of us better board members, as we assist other CEOs along their journeys."
Doug Leone, Global Managing Partner, Sequoia Capital

"Frank Slootman is one of the best performing CEOs there is. This book is essential reading for every leader who aspires to motivate teams, inspire excellence, and deliver beyond expectations.”
―Bill McDermott, President and CEO, ServiceNow

"Amp It Up is a terrific read for leaders and future leaders, whether they are at a start-up, an SMB, or a big company. As a CEO, Frank exudes total clarity on what to do, and equally as important what not to do...so if you are looking for a must-read about leadership, being focused on your mission, and executing at the highest levels, this is the book!"
Joe Tucci, former Chairman and CEO, EMC

"Over the past 15 years, I’ve had a front-row seat to watch Frank Slootman’s operational excellence on display at Data Domain, ServiceNow, and Snowflake. What makes Frank the best technology CEO on the planet: he sets and then beats unreasonably high expectations; he is a high-integrity people leader; he makes the strategy clear to all; and he is a fearless leader willing to do whatever it takes to win. Amp It Up is a must-read book for anyone looking to take their team and organization to the next level."
Mike Speiser, Managing Director, Sutter Hill Ventures

“Frank worked for me as Data Domain became EMC and – wow! – what an incredible leader. He built an intensity around clear business priorities and the customer value proposition and drove it through the organization daily. Amp It Up tells that story and how it can be recreated in other organizations.”
Pat Gelsinger, CEO, Intel

“Frank Slootman brings his experience of delivering success into plain sight for all of us to learn and be inspired by: simplify the value proposition, focus on the customer, take away distraction and confusion, relentlessly drive execution with excellence, faster... Amp It Up is a recipe we can all apply.”
―Frans van Houten, CEO of Royal Philips

The book is easy to read, and full of wisdom. I have read numerous leadership books and I found this book to be eye-opening for executives and those who aspire to lead others.
The book is more about the what and how and less about the why, which makes it practical.

I liked the clarity, truth and decisiveness. It’s impossible to argue with success, and impossible to dispute the priorities of execution over everything else. I appreciate the system of principles which were distilled from experience and common sense. All ring true to me, as a software entrepreneur.

HOWEVER - the author glosses over what appears to be the hinge factor of his stellar successes; an impressive and superior ability to make successful bets on the companies he leads.

This uncanny ability is the true backstory in frank slootman’s amazing story; the ability to identify winners and losers and then lead them from strength to strength.

I’ve lived his examples and come out with the same conclusions. I wish I had this book 30 years ago. I have recommended it to family and peers.

On the job Leadership material
Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2022
This book is written by a CEO with a proven track record that has a formula for making a company successful in terms of revenue and growth. The author takes you through examples of approaches he took with different companies and some of those with companies at different stages in their growth phases. It's not the only way, it is just a different approach. Where as someone like Branson will get behind his companies by taking care of his employees and his customers this CEO takes the approach of keeping the organization hyper focused and working smarter within the given context. He takes a stand point of going into war with the competition to have his company grow. He does not talk much about other things like doing the mooshie things to take care of employees but treats as something serous because employees livelihoods depend on the success of the company. He acknoweleges that it takes different types of leadership at different phases of the companies growth. And he reasons that the approach should change depending on the phase. He also provides advise on what a CEO should do to lead the organization.

This book was good enough. Definitely some motivated reasoning at times, and I struggled to get past all the self congratulatory passages and chapters.

Parts of it are trite, but the book is short and straightforward - work your ass off and make sure you surround yourself with the A-team.

I will say the last chapter on board management is quite interesting.

I'm a new grad engineer and I found his last few chapters very insightful. Frank is old-school, his advice does not involve new age ideas or copious amounts of citations from the social research industry. They all come from his real life experience, which is why I trust them more than any other advice I've read. It's also inspiring to hear how he was stuck in a dead end job for more than a decade before making 3 successful IPO and subsequently becoming a billionaire. Adds a bit of perspective into your life. I strongly recommend this book for everyone to read!

3.0 out of 5 stars Very solid ideas, could be 1/3 in length (as most management books)
Reviewed in Spain on April 14, 2024
The ideas are great, really useful, but as most management books is full of filler chapters and stories. At least this time the author is upfront with this and says is his style. Said that, worth the read and time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book written by an operator
Reviewed in India on April 7, 2024
It's a rarity to find a good book focussed on execution written by an actual operator. This is one of them.

The only few others I can think of are 'Hard things about hard things', and 'high output management'

Wishing for more such books written by actual operators
