The Promise of King Washington: A Short Story (Short Story Singles) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 28 ratings

When the aliens came, it wasn't a military invasion: it was an economic one.

Shortly after first contact, Earth became the latest proxy war between the two major alien empires in the galaxy. Now humanity is divided between Monarchist-sponsored nations and Imperialist-sponsored nations, and the last independent holdout—the United States of America—has just experienced a coup.

Sam Fisher doesn't know why the new president has agreed to give him an interview, but as an independent journalist and alternative media blogger, he intends to hold the would-be dictator's feet to the fire. But when he sees the gallows lining both sides of the National Mall, he can't help but wonder if coming to Washington DC at this time of enormous turmoil was a mistake.

This story was originally published in Again, Hazardous Imaginings (December 2020), and received the highest ranking (***) on Tangent Online's 2020 recommended reading list.

What would happen if two alien forces decide to make Earth their battleground? The fight is not over politics or ideals - it is all about control of resources. Sound familiar? Well, even if it doesn't the reader will find it is an even-handed look at power and corruption from all sides. It is also a tribute to The Constitution which is arguably the best document ever created and enacted on this planet to preserve freedom of choice. Read it and think.

As I started this short story, I expected a typical worldview I have grown tired of..that morals and ethics are bad, and selfish behavior should be glorified.

By the end of the story I was ready to read more .

A very short story but really a fantastic read. Gets your attention right at the beginning. I do not recommend you read this because it has the biggest cliffhanger I have ever experienced, and you will be very disappointed that there is no more.

I find this to be very interesting to read. It was written several years ago and yet touches on what is happening now.

So much truth in the book about today's idiotic media and politics. Substituting a few words you have the drama of America today.

To me, this short story is about politics and power. Interesting to read how the world came to how it is in the story and what power some people think they have over others.
