Great story! ended too quickly

Great story! ended too quickly
This duology is delightful! It’s great to have clean steampunk complete with airships, gliders, creepy metal men, steampunk firearms, sky pirates, and “zombies.” I loved book 1; Secrets in the Mist and couldn’t wait until the sequel! I received an advanced reader’s copy of Blood Secrets in exchange for an honest review. I now have hardback copies of both books!Cass is a relatable female character who is a brave survivor without being overbearing or independent to a fault like many female characters in YA fiction today. Theo is a wonderful example of a young gentleman adventurer. Their romance is sweet! They are one of my new favorite literary couples. This is an exciting adventure set in a dystopian world where humanity has fled to the highest elevations because The Mist is taking over the entire land. Resources are limited and the wealthy class suppresses the lower classes as they fight for survival. The Mist indiscriminately turns people into soulless zombies (called “turned” in the story.) The story is thrilling but not too scary, dark, or graphic for younger readers. Cass and Theo hold the key to dispelling the mist and overturning the power of the 5 ruling families. Cass wrestles with doubts throughout the story because finding a cure for the mist would change society forever and she isn’t sure if she can bring herself to help those who are responsible for The Mist. This gives depth to her character.I gave 5 stars for book 1, but Blood Secrets gets 4 stars from me only because I feel like the ending was rushed. The story wraps up neatly, but too quickly. I would love this author to return to this world very soon! There are some awesome side characters and overall world-building that I would love to see fleshed out.

I loved this steampunk series by Morgan L. Busse. Blood Secrets had all the great and mysterious worldbuilding aspects of Secrets in the Mist and ramped up tension. Cass and Theo struggle to stay above the mist and out of the hands of the very people who should be trying to save the world but want to destroy any evidence of that possibility. The romance is sweet and subtle, the side characters are loveable and have unseen depth that you can feel, and the world of mist, mountain-peak cities, floating towns, and dirigibles all add up to an enjoyable read. I would recommend the Skyworld series as a whole to readers of fantasy, teens and up!

I'd been looking forward to this book ever since that stunner of a cliffhanger ending in "Secrets in the Mist."

Spoilers ahead!

I really liked that Busse showed a struggle going on for Cass. The government of her world is corrupt and Busse does an amazing job showing why some of the leaders don't want a cure for the mist to be found and available for all, because that would change the balance of power and they wouldn't have the same level of control over people anymore.

Meanwhile, Cass has to grapple with the thought that are some people who don't *deserve* a cure, such as the government officials who have spent years deciding who lives and who dies in "purges" where people are forced into the mist to lessen the surplus population. She also has to come to terms with the possibility that having a cure may not change things if those in power don't change their attitudes toward people whom they consider "less than." I thought the way that Busse presented all of this felt very natural and well done and the answers came down to Cass having to decide if she would look out only for herself and others who were naturally immune, or accept that Elaeros (this world's name for God) cares about every life and that her gift should be shared with all.

Then there was Theo, whom I have loved from the very beginning. He's such a respectable guy and I loved his relationship with Cass. It was the perfect slow burn where they genuinely felt like friends before actually falling in love. I also loved that Theo and others who were believers in Elaeros were examples to Cass simply by living their faith out loud. We never had any big preachy moments that felt aimed at the reader. The faith element was there and it was strong, but in a way felt like a natural part of the story that truly shaped what happened. If you took the faith out, it wouldn't be the same story, and I really like that.

As for critiques, I don't have many besides the book feeling a little short. That was kind of the nature of the type of story, though, so that's only a minor critique. A part of me would have liked the ending to slow down and show some of the struggles and joys that came with the healing of the world, but I also see how that wasn't totally necessary, and the epilogue did wrap things up nicely.

The only other issue I can think of was one big action scene where the main character would have been absolutely justified in acting in self-defense by shooting a villain, but they didn't. I don't know if Busse felt that such an action would have been out of character for this individual, or what, but I felt frustrated that both people in this big, climactic fight had a gun, but the hero refused to use theirs against the villain even as the villain shot at, hit, and attempted to strangle them. I think the hero in question was feeling like, now that they saw the value in every life, they couldn't bring themselves to take a life intentionally. And I respect that. At the same time, I feel that the taking of life in self-defense is justified when someone is actively trying to kill you. The fight was fairly long, so my frustration grew every time the villain almost killed this person and they didn't reach for their revolver. But the villain got defeated in the end, so I guess that's what's important.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed this duology! I never expected to pick up any book related to zombies, and it was only the author's specific handling of this element, not to mention her Christian worldview that convinced me to give this a try. It was so creative, dramatic, and atmospheric and I truly enjoyed reading it.

Morgan L. Busse’s Blood Secrets is the second of the Skyworld duology. The second novel finds our main characters Theo and Cass on the run from those in power who want a deadly, mist-filled world to stay the way it is. The book is equal parts steampunk adventure, cozy romance, and faith-crisis drama. Blood Secrets doesn’t shy away from the hard questions such as why do people live in poverty if there’s a loving God? Or if you save the world will it change for the better?
Blood Secrets wraps up the Skyworld series to a satisfying conclusion. The world building is ingenious and fascinating. The zombies in the mist, while not as frightening as in a horror novel, provides a constant source of tension. Most importantly, the themes explored in the narrative transcend the typical steampunk novel and elevate this offering to a must-read.

A perfect end to this little series with more adventure, danger, and romance. So happy I decided to read these books!

I'm not much of a zombie fan. But I love pirates. And steampunk can be pretty good sometimes. I'll give it a shot.

Or so I thought after hearing Morgan Busse speak at a conference (first time I'd heard of her) back in March. I didn't expect this one to be my cup of tea, but I just had to get her book from the bookstore. She spoke with such intentionality and passion about her characters (and had some pretty cool premises that intrigued me, too) that I just wanted to know more about her and her work. I heard that those who didn't love zombies still liked her Secrets in the Mist and that's the one book of hers the store had (plus it was signed! Score!), so I got it. Read it in April. And nearly died at the cliffhanger.

Fast forward, I'm reading another steampunk sky pirates with zombies book to find out how it all ends. And, guys, I never ever thought I'd say this about a steampunk sky pirates with zombies book, but this book was such a comfort read. It gave me that feeling of curling up by a warm fire surrounded by a loving family. Just something about it curled its way into my heart and was just a comforting read. I can't explain it!

I read this one in two days (if I hadn't started right at bedtime, it may have been a one-sitting kind of read XD). It wasn't a must-read page-turner, on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of story. But Busse spun a story that built a slow-burn kind of tension, drawing me deeper and deeper under into her web with a compelling suspense rather than the typical heart-pounding kind. I've never really experienced anything like that until this duology. And I gotta say, I'm hooked.

And without spoilers I can reportedly say that the cliffhanger resolved beautifully. I was half afraid to read this sequel because the ending of book one just hurt. I wasn't sure how the characters were going to react and I was nervous. But Busse pulled it off and I was impressed.

Cass and Theo and Adora and some of the newer characters we got to see more of in this book just captivated me. I loved them. They were the kind of characters who made me want to jump into the story and live with them. I loved how they each struggled, but pushed through to overcome the obstacles. Their growth and steady companionship was a beautiful breath of fresh air.

There was a twist I kept expecting to come (even from book 1) that never did. I got down to the last 20-30 pages and was like "Uh...where we goin? How's this gonna wrap up? Whaaaat's happnin' guys??" Even though it didn't get as twisty as I'd thought, I still enjoyed it very much. Looking back, I don't really feel like a lot happened in the second book that was very surprising. The plot wasn't super predictable. That's not what I mean. Vague. Which may have attributed to the slower feel, but the pacing didn't feel off at all!

The world was so much fun and I kind of hope we get to go back to it one day. And I'm so pumped to read more by her--and hopefully to learn some tips and tricks along the way!

Content: no swearing. A clean, mild, sweet romance. Some fantasy/steampunk violence, but nothing super graphic. And the zombies weren't super graphic and gross, which was nice (we actually saw even less of them in this one than the first one). I'd say it's probably fine for an early teen.
