The Fireballer: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 3,690 ratings

A poignant story about hopes, dreams, and how far one man’s talent takes him before he realizes it’s about what you do—and how you do it.

Frank Ryder is unstoppable on the baseball field—his pitches arrive faster than a batter can swing, giving his opponents no chance. He’s being heralded as a game-changing pitcher.

But within the maelstrom of press, adulation, and wild speculation, Frank is a man alone. Haunted by a tragic incident from years past, he yearns to be the best but cannot reconcile the guilt he carries with the man everyone believes him to be. Frank’s path to redemption leads him on a journey back to where his life changed forever, to visit his family, his high school coach, and his brother. Through reconnection and reconciliation with those also deeply affected by the devastating event of Frank’s youth, he finds peace and his place in the world both in and outside the game.

The Fireballer is a lyrical, moving story of undeniable talent and the life-changing power of forgiveness and a subtly romantic ode to America’s favorite pastime.

Review

“Readers looking for sports fiction heavy on the baseball will enjoy this book.” Library Journal

“Like the game of baseball, the great American pastime, there is much to love in The Fireballer by Mark Stevens…a book to enjoy like it was the seventh game of the World Series and your team won.” New York Journal of Books

“Fleet and fun, The Fireballer will appeal to fans of The Natural and Robert Coover’s The Universal Baseball Association. Frank Ryder is a classic American hero—the phenom who has to overcome his own terrible past. Mark Stevens has done the impossible: He actually had me rooting for the Orioles.” —Stewart O’Nan, coauthor of Faithful and author of Ocean State

“Seldom do I read a book that knocks my socks off the way The Fireballer did. This is a feel-good baseball story with a hold on the vernacular, the heart, the soul, the big picture, and the subtleties of America’s favorite summer pastime. The characters are beautifully etched, and pitcher Frank Ryder may be the most likeable hero since Gary Cooper gave life to Lou Gehrig on the big screen. I guarantee that you don’t have to be a baseball fan to be swept up by this moving tale. With a full heart, I recommend—no, insist—that you read The Fireballer.” —William Kent Krueger, author of Fox Creek and This Tender Land

“Mark Stevens’s The Fireballer is a timeless baseball story told with a love of the game and fast-moving prose that will leave you cheering and crying at the same time. Frank Ryder is the most appealing of heroes, taciturn and loyal, talented and haunted—truly haunted—and with a fastball that will change the game. With its authentic baseball scenes and its rich heart, The Fireballer is a novel that rests comfortably with other classics of the game.” —William Lashner, author of The Barkeep

The Fireballer is not just a great baseball yarn that any fan of the game will enjoy—it is also a richly-layered exploration of character, regret, and redemption.” —Lou Berney, author of November Road and The Long and Faraway Gone

“The old game of baseball keeps coming up with new stories about the next twist or turn in the sport. In The Fireballer, Mark Stevens has invented a startling ‘What if?’ that stretches the limits of the game. More than a baseball book, the novel is a journey through the mind and heart of a gifted, but tragic, athlete who finds a road to redemption.” —Stephen Singular, New York Times bestselling author

The Fireballer is a compelling story that I found hard to put down, rich with authentic baseball details and full of heart. Mark Stevens hits it out of the park with this intricate and moving tale of redemption.” —Robert Bailey, Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Golfer’s Carol

“Mark Stevens has crafted a powerful, heartfelt story—with a memorable baseball backdrop—that carves out a place alongside classics like The Art of Fielding and The Natural. Stevens knows the game—but it’s his deft narrative and characters that help this book truly sing. I couldn’t put it down.” —Alex Segura, bestselling author of Secret Identity

“You don’t have to know baseball to love The Fireballer. At the center of this big-hearted book is Frank Ryder, a star pitcher tormented by a mistake in his past. Readers root for Frank not for his fastball, but because his redemption delivers us all.” —Stephanie Kane, award-winning mystery writer and author of True Crime Redux

“Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie…and heart. Pitcher phenom Frank Ryder’s heart is bigger than the game—as is his grief—and his fastball has the potential to transform or destroy both. As Mark Stevens divulges Ryder’s temptations and talent alongside the complexities of the sport, readers will find themselves captivated by a world-class athlete’s regrets and life choices in The Fireballer.” —Janet Fogg, award-winning author of Soliloquy and coauthor of the best seller Fogg in the Cockpit

The Fireballer goes straight into my pantheon of great baseball writing, alongside The Brothers K (David James Duncan), The Art of Fielding (Chad Harbach), You Gotta Have Wa (Robert Whiting), and the many treasures by Roger Angell. Mark Stevens’s ability to get ‘inside baseball’—while telling a moving human story—is both astounding and worthy of readers of all interests and tastes.” —John Galligan, author of the Bad Axe County series

“In The Fireballer, Mark Stevens may have invented a new subgenre: the emotional thriller. As Frank Ryder journeys to the source of both his phenomenal talent and his psychic pain, I couldn’t stop turning pages. And when he earns his redemption? Reader, I cried. Love, loss, and ultimate triumph—this book delivers at 110 miles per hour.” —Keir Graff, author of The Three Mrs. Wrights (writing with Linda Joffe Hull as Linda Keir)

“Brimming with humanity, The Fireballer is a richly imagined tale of the modern American pastime with a heart as big as center field. Pure storytelling genius.” — Scott Graham, winner of the National Outdoor Book Award and author of Saguaro Sanction

The Fireballer is about a baseball pitcher, sure. The way The Natural is about a bat and Shoeless Joe is about a corn field. But this many-layered tale deeply considers hope, fear, love, grief, and change, all through the prism of our beautiful national pastime. The writing is heartfelt and gorgeous. The Fireballer struck me out.” —Richard Cass, author of the Elder Darrow Jazz Mysteries and The Last Altruist

“This is a great American novel that is about so much more than the great American pastime.” —Wendy J. Fox, author of If the Ice Had Held and What If We Were Somewhere Else

“The Fireballer isn’t just about baseball. It’s about life and loss and what love can do. Mark Stevens shows not only a deep understanding of the game but of human frailty and grace as well. This book is a true triumph.” —Claire Booth, award-winning journalist and critically acclaimed author of the Hank Worth mysteries

“With baseball as the backdrop, The Fireballer is a rich story that will have you rooting for Frank Ryder as he struggles with imprinted tragedies of his past. Don’t be dissuaded if you’re not a fan of baseball. The enjoyment of this novel comes from the talent of Mark Stevens and his craft of characters with depth and heart. The emotion is palpable and the story moving.” —Wendy Terrien, award-winning author of The Rampart Guards

The Fireballer is more than a story of a freakishly talented baseball pitcher. It’s the story of a good man trapped in an industry that both reveres and despises his abilities, and disregards the emotional toll the game takes. While reading The Fireballer I could see the players scattered in the field, smell the beer and hot dogs at the stadium, and feel the whoosh of Frank Ryder’s fastball zooming past the batter. A truly great sports novel.” —Stephanie Gayle, author of Idyll Threats

“In fresh, evocative prose, Stevens spins a tale about a phenom baseball pitcher that transcends the genre of ‘sports fiction.’ Compelling and humane. Highly recommended.” —Karen Odden, USA Today bestselling author of the Inspector Corravan Mysteries

From the Publisher

The Fireballer is a book I’ll never forget. I truly can’t talk about this book except in a rush of emotion, crescendo-ing to uncontrollable tears while I spoil the ending, which, of course, I won’t do here in this letter.

Mark Stevens has written a remarkable novel—a book about humanity by way of baseball. If you, like me, are a fan of
The Natural, Field of Dreams, or Moneyball, read on. This one’s for you.

The Fireballer is captivating, emotional, tender, and hopeful. The story of one man’s extraordinary talent and stoicism. The story of mistakes and guilt and forgiveness and grace. Of unwritten rules and personal codes of honor. Of a nation joyfully caught up in collective fervor, rooting for an underdog rookie pitcher as he breaks records and exemplifies good sportsmanship. The story of how he almost loses everything and how, in order to find his way forward, he looks back.

Whether or not you’re a fan of the quintessential American pastime, the story within these pages will, I hope, spark in you the same feelings of connection, understanding, and reverie that I have when I read (and reread) it. It means the world to me to be able to share it now with you.

As Babe Ruth said, “The only real game, I think, in the world is baseball.”

Review: The Fireballer: A Novel by Mark Stevens
Many years ago, when Tiger Woods started, it was clear nobody could do what he could do. Nobody had the power, before him, to drive the tee shot so far down the length of the fairway. He made it look easy and the lords of golf were not pleased. Before long, as it seemed like every tournament would be naming Tiger Woods as a champion, the courses were changed and others were marketed as “Tiger Proof.” What Tiger was first to do is now routine for many professional golfers. His days of being a phenom were numbered because human ability and the sport evolved.Frank Ryder is in the same spot in the here and now as Tiger Woods was many years ago. The sport is different is this time it is baseball. Frank Ryder can consistently pitch at 110 mph and maybe even higher. What he can do with a baseball is amazing and it is just not the speed. Though the speed makes everything else work incredibly well. Because of him, the Baltimore Orioles are upsetting the competitive balance in the American League East where the Yankees and Red Sox expect to dominate the standings and the market. What Frank Ryder can do is seen by some as a threat to baseball itself. The owners are soon discussing putting a cap on how fast a ball can be thrown because Ryder is virtually unhittable. Instead of celebrating human achievement and the fact that what Ryder can do now will be common in another few years, they want to micromanage Ryder because fans surveyed seem to want to see homers and not shutouts. It should be a magical year for Ryder as he takes his team to the playoffs for the first time in a very long time. But, it isn’t. Ryder has a dark secret. Some of which folks know about as long ago he honored one of the many unwritten rules of baseball. But, what the public knows about what happened is just the tip of the iceberg. Much more is going on in Ryder’s head. Dealing with the past and the pressure of now is difficult when the media is focused on every move you make and every breath you take. The Fireballer: A Novel by Mark Stevens is a complicated read and one that goes far beyond the game of baseball. Legacy, hope, redemption, and more play out against the backdrop of baseball, being a teammate, and how you deal with the unwritten rules. The same unwritten rules that mandate how you function as a teammate because that is the way it has always has been.Much like this review that only skims the surface of the book, The Fireballer: A Novel by Mark Stevens is a complicated book on multiple levels. At its heart, it is about a supremely talented pitcher in major league baseball. But, far more is at work in this complicated read. The Fireballer: A Novel by Mark Stevens is and incredibly complicated and powerful novel. It is also well worth your time, regardless of how you feel about baseball. My reading copy came by way of an ARC through NetGalley.Kevin R. Tipple ©2023

I enjoyed this book so much! The story is very engaging and Frank Ryder is so relatable. You don’t have to be into baseball, or any other sport, to really enjoy this book. Baseball is just the vehicle for the story, and a good one at that.

I don’t follow sports, and it’s been years since I’ve been to a baseball game. So if you’re not into sports, this book is still very enjoyable. I have some first hand experience with baseball and that brought this book a little closer to home for me. My brother played little league for a few years, and our dad coached. I’ve spent a lot of time in the dugout as scorekeeper and really loved those kids. I lived in Apopka when we went against Japan in the Little League World Series. We have family in Vero Beach and saw the Dodger’s spring training games. Baseball is the only sport I ever wanted to play, but I was a girl and softball wasn’t the same, so I watched from the stands and the dugouts and adopted “There’s no crying in baseball” as my mantra.

I found myself rereading sections because I wanted to savor them. The scenes were so vivid that I could see the dust on the field, feel the humidity in the air, hear the crack of the bat as it connected with the ball, and feel the bass sound of the ball as it thwapped against the catcher’s mitt. It was similar to listening to a sportscaster on the radio who can call the play by plays so vividly that you can see the game in your head. It wasn’t a bunch of statistics and numbers that don’t mean anything to the average person. It’s a story of determination, perseverance, family, forgiveness, dedication and love. It goes beyond baseball and that’s what makes this book truly special.

Not really being a baseball fan of the game, I wondered if I was making a mistake by choosing this book. At first I wasn't so sure that I could get through it but, it did grab my attention and became quite an interesting story. Made me see the work that goes into the game. I would recommend this book to anybody who loves sports in general.

Amazing read. You don’t have to be an avid baseball fall or sports enthusiast to enjoy this book. If you mention the name of a team I can identify which sport it is, know basic rules to be able to follow a game when in a situation where watching one is needed and thats about it. That said, this was one of the best novels i’ve read this year, and I read A LOT of books in a year. It’s thought provoking, emotional, entertaining, inspiring and was a fun read. So well written … a didn’t want to put it down but had to to get some sleep for work next day. This is going on the short list of highly recommend. You won’t regret reading this one.

As stated, I’m not a baseball fan; but, the author drew me in and showed me a new world. The stories behind the players, their lives, their passion, and the plain facts of the game were all an education for me. The story intrigued me and I eagerly returned to reading when I had to close the book. The characters came alive under the author’s hand. For me it dragged on a little long but was still interesting enough to keep me reading. I do recommend this book for anyone. Fans will especially appreciate it. Non-fans will be introduced to something new.

This is a story that is probably more young adult but I did enjoy as an almost retirement age reader. I did really enjoy his perspective on baseball at the end of the book. All in all a book I did enjoy and recommend to read if you like baseball.

Baseball is a game of inches. But Frank Ryder throws so hard that the inches are disappearing. He’s changing the game. Some think he’s breaking it. Will the game shut him down? That risk is secondary for Frank. He’s got his own demons to worry about first.

An engaging story of a rookie breaking into the big leagues coupled with interesting ideas of how baseball adapts as human performance challenges the existing dimensions.

I've got increasingly disappointed by the run of Amazon Prime first reads recently. It was nice to get something a bit different. Although I live in the UK I'm a big baseball fan (Go Red Sox) so I was interested to read this. I thought some of the 'politics' about Frank's pitching being too hard for the good of the game somewhat unbelievable. Fans will always go the see great pitching and whilst hitting and runs are great the games purists appreciate the art of the pitcher.

Likewise some of the dramatic moments were a bit forced but overall and entertaining and interesting read.

Please can we have more choices like this rather than some of the predictable and dull crime thrillers that are usually offered?

Unfortunately, as I'm not much of a baseball fan this book had limited appeal! It was a slow-paced read, and did little to encourage me to invest in the story. If you're interested in the nuance of the impact faster baseball pitchers have on the game, however, absolutely this will be a good read for you.
