4.2 out of 5 stars 67 ratings

In a world where motherhood can be a crime, a woman risks everything to defy those in power . . .

Ten years after the world took drastic action to rein in overpopulation, Elspeth suspects she is pregnant—illegally—after a brief, alcohol-fuelled fling with Nick. Even procuring a test to confirm it would be risky.

As Elspeth tries desperately to keep her condition hidden from the authorities, a female detective becomes convinced something illicit is going on—and tries to resuscitate her own troubled career by pursuing this lawbreaker. But behind the scenes, two people are determined to come to Elspeth’s aid. One is someone close to her who has a secret. The other is someone she would never have expected. Now, as danger closes in, how far will they go to keep Elspeth—and her unborn baby—safe?

I really enjoyed reading this, and the plot itself is not over done or over played. Very well written. I couldn't stop reading.

With the current political trend, this book is right on target. Overpopulation had long been a threat and hot topic. This book takes a look at a world enforced reproduction policy - what happens to those unplanned moments?
A woman enjoys a casual evening only to discover she is pregnant.
The doctor who created a proposal to slow overpopulation has become to figure head of this policy. 10 years later - does she still support her own work?
And of course the underground, grassroots activism.
Chilling and realistic. Well needed at this time of political unrest.

Ten years ago, Alice Franklin thought she had a solution to the world's overpopulation. What if people were limited to 1 child? It would take generations but Alice was sure they could solve a lot of Earth's problems.

It wasn't a popular idea it many countries embraced it and it seemed to be helping. England though, took it one step further. Potential parents had to be married and they had to be approved. The concept of choice in pregnancy soon became a government decision.

Elspeth finds herself in a tricky situation after a one night stand. She is single, pregnant, and unapproved. If she's caught, she goes to jail and her baby is taken.

Her friend Artie wants to help. And Alice wants to help. She backs her theory of 1 child per family but doesn't agree with the restrictions established in England. She wants to change them

This book really examines the concept of choice. And not just between having the child or aborting. Simply being pregnant can be a crime.

I really enjoyed this book and it makes you think. I highly recommend it!

Tha k you , bloodhound books!

This book comes out April 28, 2022. This is a book that makes you think about your freedom over your life body. The issues of becoming a mother, and family, with a spouse or partner. It so wonderful how the story can grip you in hold. And the emotional aspect to the storylines. This novel is about the law was passed that families can have only one child per family, and single woman can't have children without approval, and what can happen to them if they don't abide by the law. They can be arrested. The character inside had to face this issue. The story answers why the law was passed, who made the law come into a law. what or who is monitoring the families, children, and single woman. Hoe the love became to control mankind life rather, then help people. I enjoyed every moment of the novel.

The story and themes in this book are very relevant in the current political climate, where women's rights over bodily autonomy are once again being put up for debate. The plot delves into a world that is overpopulated, where you can only have a baby if you receive government permission to do so, and even then couples are permitted to have one child per family. The book tells the story of two women trying to come to terms with a world in which one of them had a hand in creating and the other is suffering the consequences of the political environment. It is also a love story on various levels. Though it's not necessarily fast-paced or action-packed, the plot keeps you reading and thinking: what would I do in this scenario? Great read during some down time.

Very interesting story around choices and the consequences of making the choices that aren't considered legal. Also, how far should a governing body be able to limit the choices of people for the "greater good" versus individuals. This would be a great book to use to create some really intense discussions in a class or even in a book club. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.

A story that has far reaching consequences, is relevant to issues today, and addresses fear and needs basic to humanity. Amazing. Well written.

Not my usual genre but I was hooked from page one. A thought-provoking story about the consequences of the choices we make not only as individuals but as advisors and lawmakers. Only a few years ago the plot would have been dismissed as unbelievable but in today’s world, it is scarily feasible. Exceptionally well written, the story flows to the conclusion—a real page-turner.

I thoroughly enjoyed Consequence of Choice. I was hooked from the start and couldn’t put the book down. I was intrigued by the characters and loved the familiar locations mentioned in the book, many of which I know well therefore I could picture them which made it for me even more interesting. A very well written book and a great holiday read, shame it had to end! Thank you Natalie!

From the start this book had me hooked. The storyline is disturbingly believable in the modern world of overpopulation. The characters and their choices got me thinking about what I would do in this situation, and how the world would react to an enforced law of this nature.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend.

This story was intriguing because it tackled subjects that have started to encroach on our every day lives. A very good read for young people, I look forward to reading more from this very imaginative author who also recognises the possible realities of our futures.
