Unbreakable Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 115 ratings

A dangerous, irresistible love threatens an investigation into an elusive serial killer in the first book in an explosive romantic thriller trilogy.

Alexandra “Lexie” Fleming is the hottest detective on the Norfolk Police Department. She is on the trail of the “Last Call Killer,” a brutal serial killer who preys on college girls. Lexie is driven to solve the case even though her life is falling apart. She must find a way to stay one step ahead of the killer despite her grief over the sudden death of her partner and the betrayal she feels as her marriage implodes.

When Lexie’s new partner, detective Danielle Watkins, enters her already chaotic world, the tension is undeniable. Danielle is good at her job, strong-willed and just as stubborn as Lexie, and at first they clash professionally. Danielle is also beautiful, and the electricity between the two detectives is impossible to ignore: the subtle touches, the lingering looks, the late-night conversations. Lexie is swept away by the forbidden feelings growing within her. As they track the killer, they come to trust and depend on each other, and their relationship deepens. The twists and turns of the case might destroy the newfound passion between Danielle and Lexi—or their love—could prove unbreakable . . .

Great first book from a debut author! The book has the twists and turns of a crime thriller with a touch of a love story that has you wondering what will win out. Will it be love or the judgement of society and the obstacles life puts in the way? I like that there are multiple viewpoints from the characters and the internal monologues to help you get inside the characters’ minds. The story is a quick read because you’ll want to know how the story is going to end! The story line and characters have the potential for a series if that’s where the author wants to take it. If you like crimes, love, and surprise you should definitely check out this book!

This story had plenty of potential but the story wasn't told smoothly. I like a good police story but the story didn't focus enough on the killer at first. When Ms. Seal did begin to focus on him I was a bit surprised who it was. The chemistry between the MCs was okay, not off the charts. I don't think I ever got a clear understanding of why the married cop stayed with her husband when it was clearly over. I didn't even get a sense of her feelings which is part of the problem I had with this book.
The author didn't take time to really bring us into the two women's emotions until late in the game. However, the story was okay for a first effort. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys police stories.

The plot is good, is definitely a great idea but the storytelling is lacking. I picked this book because the description was enticing and it was relatively short. It took me a lot longer to finish reading than books I’ve read that have double the number of pages because the writing felt rushed and all over the place and I just kept losing interest. The only reason I finished reading it is cause I started and I hate to leave a book unfinished. I like series because I enjoy seeing how authors become more proficient at their craft and part of me would like to read the next hoping to see improvement but I think is going to be a while before I ventured to do so if I can convince myself to do it. I would rather read an obnoxiously longer book if the stories are well developed so hoping next time the author allows herself more time even if it means a lot more writing. Keep at it

I felt like the story lines were all over the place with plots skimmed over and rushed. It was a good superficial read.

The story had its moments but mostly, it was just okay. However, there were so many errors in the actual writing -- wrong punctuation in almost every paragraph, especially quotations, and with commas that aren't needed or should be periods or semicolons and no commas where they are needed; obvious missing words; awkward syntax and sentences that simply don't make sense -- that it was virtually unreadable.
It also boggles the mind how often the characters, law enforcement professionals, simply abandon their duties and take off for another state.
Although it may not seem so, I really do hate to write negative reviews because bringing a book into print takes a tremendous amount of work on the part of an author. However, putting a book in this condition -- with no hint of an editor's touch or even a beta reader's -- before the public shows such complete disdain for the reader that it deserves to be called out. Additionally, as one of those readers, it makes me mad as hell.
If I weren't proud of my general efforts to avoid DNFs, I'd have given up a quarter of the way through Unbreakable because it was quite clear that it wasn't going to get any better. Regretfully, I have to say, pass on this one.

This is the first book i have read by this author and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Dani and Lexi are homicide detectives. They become partners after a loss. The two Become extremely close. Lexi is married to Chris. They had been separated for some time but had talked every day, though living in two different states. They separated after Chris had been caught involved in a Ponzi scheme. They were thinking of giving their marriage another try. Lexi had mixed mixed feelings. But the horrific case Dani and Lexi were on was to save young women's lives. The hunt took them out of state.
The action In this 1st book kept me engaged. i couldnt put it down & finished in one afternoon. All three characters had flaws. But a couple had redeeming qualities after a rocky start.
The detectives were blindsided in more ways then one.
You won't be disappointed in the series.
On to the 2nd book in the series!
Great writing Melissa! Thank you for your service!!

3.0 out of 5 stars It’s a good read - stick with it!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 24, 2020
In the first third of the book Melissa Seal explains that Lexie whilst working the active casework on the serial killer was stymied. She is working other cases currently without a partner which is why Danielle is brought in. I thought it was interesting to get a perspective of detectives having to work more than one investigation, giving priority as leads, new information and so on allows.

The working relationship between Lexie and Danielle is strained from the beginning. Lexie is openly hostile at times. Lexie is married but finds herself attracted to Danielle, who is single. It’s a complicated personal relationship as Lexie and her husband have been separated. However, the feelings Lexie has for Danielle seem to push her closer to a reunion with her husband.

This early part of the book wasn’t quite as smooth a read as the second two-thirds. I say this because some readers won’t finish a book if they are not invested early on. However, if you stick with it then I think you will find it will be worth it.

As we move more into the investigation of the “Last Call Killer” things begin to move forward with good pace, it helps in settling the professional relationship between the two women. What happens on a personal level is not handled well by Lexie as she tussles with her feelings and sends mixed messages. Some readers may not like the overlapping of relationships.

I think Lexie and Danielle could certainly become a good working detective team. I quite liked them although there is some work to be done on on the personal level.

I enjoyed Unbreakable throughout but especially from about a third of the in when it really seem to get some rhythm and pace, the story is good and has quite the twist which I really liked.

It would be good to read more from Danielle and Lexie – get their relationship settled one way or another (in a good way: just my preference!) and another good case for the two of them – so I hope Melissa keeps writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read it in one go and kept me intrigued with it's unique plot❤️

I must say i liked the storyline. It was a fast - paced, plot twisting romantic thriller and I read it in one go.

The storyline was well connected and the blend of romanticism with a mystery serial killer kept me intrigued. However, I was slightly disappointed with the first half which didn't have much to explore. The story picked pace in the second half and the plot played it's part in keeping me interested.
I loved the character of the "last call killer"- a complete maniac.

Overall, if you want to try something different this book can be a good option. It isn't a complete page turner but yes it will keep you connected.

I made myself read the whole story. There were editing issues that I could not ignore and flow control. It would be a good idea to have the story re edited then go through with another pair of eyes and rework it so that it flows better.
