Human Side of Innovation: The Power of People in Love with People Kindle Edition
Innovation is an act of love-or at least it should be. Always. It is a gesture of empathy, respect, generosity, of one human being's devotion to another, writes Mauro Porcini at the beginning of this extraordinary book.
It is in part a memoir by one of the world's leading designers-the first chief design officer at both 3M and Pepsi. But even more, it is a manifesto for a genuine, authentic, and deeply humanistic approach to design, one that aims to create personal and social value first and financial and economic value afterward.
In every industry, new technologies have lowered the barrier to entry like never before. Either you design exceptional products or somebody will beat you to it. Porcini shows, through example after example and story after story, that the key to real, world-changing innovation is to put people first-not only the people we innovate for but also the people who lead the innovation process.
Putting people first requires what Porcini calls unicorns: people who are in love with people, who have a genuine fire in them to create meaningful solutions for actual human beings. In this book, he describes them, celebrates them, and details their superpowers so you can find them, hire them, grow them, and retain them.
Some are qualities you might expect-the ability to dream combined with the ability to execute. But when was the last time you heard an executive ask prospective hires if they were kind, optimistic, curious, or humble? Porcini uses his journey across startups and multinational corporations, through successes and failures, to create a handbook for modern innovators.

About the author

Mauro Porcini is Samsung’s first-ever President & Chief Design Officer, a newly created role he assumed in April 2025.
He leads human-centered innovation through design at one of the world’s largest and most influential multinational corporations in consumer technology.
Mauro oversees a global team of 1,500 designers spanning Samsung’s three core business units—mobile, displays and TVs, and home appliances. These teams are based in Seoul, South Korea, with additional design hubs in Japan, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Brazil, and India.
Before joining Samsung, Mauro served as the first Chief Design Officer at two other global, multi-billion-dollar companies: the tech giant 3M and the food and beverage powerhouse PepsiCo.
At PepsiCo, Mauro stepped into the newly created role in 2012, tasked with building a design culture and capability from the ground up. Based in New York City, he led a transformative approach to innovation by design across a portfolio of iconic brands, including Pepsi, Lay’s, Gatorade, Mountain Dew, SodaStream, Quaker, 7UP, Doritos, LIFEWTR, Bubly, Aquafina, Cheetos, Mirinda, amongst many others. His work spanned both physical and virtual expressions of the brand, encompassing product, packaging, retail experience, fashion and art collaborations, events, architecture, and digital media.
What began as a bold ambition evolved into a thriving global design organization: by the time he left in 2025 to join Samsung, PepsiCo Design had grown into a team of nearly 400 extraordinary designers across 19 cities worldwide. Together, they redefined the role of design within a global corporation—creating products, experiences, and narratives that touched billions of lives. Mauro also built a lasting culture of creativity, passion, and human-centered thinking, now deeply embedded within the fabric of PepsiCo.
Under his leadership, the team garnered more than 2,300 design and innovation awards, a testament not only to the impact of their work but also to the people behind it. In 2018, Fortune recognized PepsiCo on its "Driven by Design" list—one of only two food and beverage companies to earn the distinction.
Prior to PepsiCo, Mauro was the first-ever Chief Design Officer at 3M, where he led the design of innovative products and experiences across multiple business sectors while nurturing a design-driven culture within the global tech company. His teams in the U.S., Italy, China, and Japan earned numerous prestigious international awards.
He began his career at Philips Design and later co-founded his own design firm, Wisemad Srl, in Italy with renowned entertainment producer and music icon Claudio Cecchetto. His work in wearable technology has been exhibited at the Louvre in Paris and the Seoul Arts Center.
Mauro is also an accomplished author. In fall 2022, he released The Human Side of Innovation: The Power of People in Love with People (Berrett-Koehler), a book on innovation, design, and leadership. It won a Gold Medal at the Better Future – New York Design Awards and has since been translated into Chinese and Arabic. In 2021, he published L’età dell’Eccellenza (Il Saggiatore), now in its fifth reprint. In 2023, he co-authored Good Design is for Everyone (Rizzoli) with his PepsiCo design team.
He has served on the boards of multiple organizations and was President of the Board of the Politecnico di Milano Foundation in the U.S. (Fellows of Politecnico) from 2022 until his move to South Korea in 2025.
Mauro also created and hosted the podcast In Your Shoes – with Mauro Porcini, available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube, where he interviewed creative leaders from around the globe. He has been a recurring judge and presenter on the CBS and Amazon Prime Video series New York by Design and America by Design.
A passionate lover of design and fashion—but not addicted to it—Mauro owns more than 350 pairs of shoes. He holds dual citizenship (Italy and the U.S.) and currently resides in Seoul, South Korea, with his wife Carlotta, their children Beatrice and Leonardo, and their three Pomeranians—Leone, Bella, and Lupo.
Awards and Recognitions
One of Mauro’s most proudest honors is the title of Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia, an order of knighthood bestowed upon him by the President of the Italian Republic. This prestigious knighthood recognizes individuals for “extraordinary merits in the preservation and promotion of national prestige abroad, fostering friendly relations and cooperation with other countries, and strengthening ties with Italy.”
Over the years, Mauro has received numerous additional accolades for his contributions to the fields of design and innovation.
From 2023 to 2025, he was included in the annual CALL 100: The World’s Most Inspiring People list by Call magazine for three consecutive years—reaching #10 in 2025. In 2012, Fortune Magazine named him in its “40 under 40” list of the most promising rising stars in business—he was the only designer included. That same year, Ad Age recognized him in its “Creativity 50” ranking of the world’s most influential creative personalities. The Politecnico di Milano Alumni Association honored him with the Alumni Polimi Award, recognizing his role in enriching Italian culture on a global scale.
In 2011, Fast Company listed him among the “50 Most Influential Designers in America” and named him a “Master of Design.” The World HR Forum in Mumbai awarded him for Leadership and Innovation, and The Wall Street Journal’s CFO Journal referred to him as “the man putting 3M on the design map.” Under his leadership, 3M was named one of Fast Company’s “30 Companies That Get Design.”

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2022This is a great and important book for anyone in the Innovation ecosystem. The book has dozens of crucial and actionable insights, and the incredible stories from Mauro’s life and career make it a pleasure to read. My personal top 3:
Mauro offers a clear and precise framework for scope of design and innovation, something that has been debated for long and that we needed to make innovation work better: Connecting the threads of traditional design, brand activation to experiences and events; and how to understand, embrace and manage through the intersection points with “business” and technology/data. This will influence and improve how we set up innovation strategy and enabling operating models.
The definition of the Unicorns’ traits, skills and capabilities was the most comprehensive prioritization I have seen to date, covering creative, IQ, and EQ comprehensively and convincingly. Directly applicable as a guideline to define development, experience and learning journeys.
And through the personal and human stories the book offers a fun, inspiring way to getting to know and understanding Mauro - one of the leaders in Design and Innovation - as a person and as a determined, passionate and visionary leader.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2022Mauro's candid and caring way of looking at the world and his ability to influence the happiness and well being of other humans makes my heart sing with joy. Never have I read a book that spoke to me so genuinely about the topic of innovative design. Mauro has both validated my personal passions for going above and beyond to understand value creation, as well as confirmation that giving a damn about delivering a meaningful, quality product is both a fiscally sound and socially responsible choice for corporate America.
Thank you for a special book, Mauro. It touched me and is already influencing how I see my role as a leader and fellow human.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2022An inspiring book for anyone trying to figure out what innovation really is about. A book that makes you realize how love, in different dimensions, makes the difference in everything we do, at work, and in life too.
It’s the love for the people we serve with our products, brands, services and experiences.
It’s the love for what we do, every day.
And it’s the love for the people surrounding us, for our teams, our colleagues, our sponsors and investors, for anybody we bring with us in our innovation journey.
I am surely biased, but the feedback on this book is as objective as it can be. This is a book I recommend to anyone…❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2022It is a refreshing take on a well-explored area of Design and Business... but never shared in this way. You really feel the author's experiences and passion for the topics. The insights that come from decades of hard fought progress in the rooms of power and influence. A breakdown of real innovation leadership from inside the boardrooms and halls of corporate America. Kindness can be a competitive advantage - not just for your internal colleagues - but also to your consumer.... or better sad the People you are creating for.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2022I was expecting (from Mauro) a book about innovation, design and branding. I found that! But mostly I found a book about life, celebrating the essential values of kindness and curiosity, optimism and resilience, vision and pragmatism, respect and proactiveness, humbleness and confidence, and more, much more... Highly recommended to anyone trying to figure out how to be successful in business and life, while also being happy and making others happy

The structure of the book is so entertaining with practical advice and theoretical guidance interwined with personal anecdotes that is hard to pause
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2022We are all looking for Unicorns in our own life! Even though the book is written by the Chief designer Officer of PepsiCo the book is great not only for who is in love with design and every related process but, like the author says " People in love with People. highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Nailed It!
I've been teaching design thinking in post-secondary for over a decade. With his book, Mauro Porcini has made me re-think design thinking, and how to "teach" it. "The Human Side of Innovation" is a must read for educators, entrepreneurs, solo-preneurs, and of course business leaders. I've decided to implement it into at least two different courses I currently teach. Grazie Mauro!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for young and experienced leaders.
As expected, being written by a great and experienced leader like Mauro, this book is amazing from 1st to last page. It captures the core values of great visionary, leadership and management, beyond the innovation and design functions, and is one of those books that you go back to often to help you find the answers. A must have.
