WALL MEN: Book One: a Haunted House (The Wall Men Series 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 300 ratings

From New York Times Bestseller Mimi Jean Pamfiloff comes a suspenseful Dark Fantasy, Wall Men: Book One, a Haunted House.

MONSTERS? VAMPIRES? GHOSTS AND DEMONS? MEN WHO GUARD THE WALL BETWEEN US AND THEM.

I’m sitting at my grandma’s bedside, moments away from losing her, when she begins to rant about monsters and men trapped in her old mansion. I practically grew up there, so I know it’s the pain meds talking. There’s nothing inside that drafty house except rotting books, rusty pipes, and neglected antiques.

“I’ve written down all the rules, Lake. You must follow them,” she tells me, gasping for air. “The Wall Men cannot get free. They are soulless and evil. They will try to seduce you. But you cannot listen. They must remain chained to the wall.”

What the…?

With her final breath, she makes me swear to read her journals. But above all, I must promise to never go inside her bedroom, the one that’s always kept locked.

Madness!

Weeks after her funeral, I’m forced to confront the neglected estate she’s left behind. I can’t afford the taxes, so it has to be cleaned and sold.

That’s when I hear a deep velvety voice on the other side of her bedroom door, demanding to be let out.

And dammit if I don’t want to break my promise and see who’s on the other side.

This book hooked me. Gave me book hangover. And made me want to re-read Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. I loved every single dark and exciting part of it.

Let me start by saying that I find reading new to me authors is a bit difficult. I’m not good with change. That also applies to new to me genres. BUT there are a select few authors I would read whatever they put out and Mimi Jean is definitely one of them.

I won’t spoil you with anything too detailed regarding the plot. I believe the blurb has enough info. But I can comment on how I felt. Which was in one word: hooked.

The story starts out mysterious and kind of spooky. Where are those voices coming from? Are they real? Is it a hallucination? What could they be? And then our heroine’s reality is flip on its axis and her life will never be the same.

I found myself racing through the story and yet wanting to slow down and enjoy every morsel of the world building. It was exciting and I even laughed more than a couple of times because Mimi is great at including Easter eggs for her readers. And even though I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2, I found myself content with where the story left off.

    Well done Mimi Jean Pamfiloff!
I couldn't put this down once I started it. It grabbed my attention from the beginning, it was exciting, intriguing and a brilliant imagination!
A grouchy, ill tempered grandma that loves only her granddaughter, her dog and trusts her handyman.
Lake is at her grandma's bedside as she's dying thinking she has lost her mind, talking about Wall Men, not trusting them and they were who killed her parents.
She told her to never go into the master bedroom and she made her promise to read her journals.
She is left with a estate that is falling apart, inheritance taxes she can't payno money for repairs, a dog that eats furniture and doors when he's left alone and a older stand offish older handyman she has feelings for.
Still thinking her grandma was off her rocker about her stories until she hears a man calling her name from within the house and even being touched when no one was there.
I can't wait to see what happens and if maybe Lake doesn't have a future with a Wall Man and which one,
I voluntarily reviewed this ARC book.

This book will take you on a journey through an alternate world that is almost too fantastical. Or it’s another take on the paranormal fiction that is so popular. Lake gets thrown into a world she knows nothing about and I believe this is her journey to survive after she loses her last remaining family member and has to come to terms with what that means for her life. On to book 2.

I did like the creativity of the world that was Monsterland. What I did not like was how long it took to get me truly interested. I was at about 70% before I wanted to read more of it. I actually had stopped and read 2 other novels before coming back. It wasn't that it was boring, it was just not engaging. I didn't like the characters or much. I could understand how Lake was shocked and grief stricken, etc. I couldn't understand how she would just act so stupid about the promise she made. It's like the girl going in the basement after she hears screaming and gunshots or something. Anyway, I gave it a 3 for creativity, but can't bring myself to read the next one.

This was a great read. I can’t wait to read the conclusion.

Lake is a Norfolk and that’s supposed to mean a lot. She is the last living Norfolk. She is caught between good and evil people that seem to only want one thing from her, but at what cost to her??

Lake it seems has been kept in the dark about a lot of things. However, with one mistake…Things are finally coming to light. However, it’s hard for her to discern the truth from a lie.

Will Lake help the Wall Men or will she succumb to the seducing of the Vampire King? It’s hard to tell. Everything is still all so surreal to her.

**I loved the sternness of her Grandmother (Rain) and of Bard. I even liked the dog (Master).

I enjoyed this story. Lake's works is turned upside down when she learns she is a living proxie between Earth and another world. Monsters and a vampire in leather pants threaten her. Lake must become strong to fight the final battle to save both worlds. This story is dark and humorous. Is Master really an ordinary dog or something else? I already pre-ordered the second book.

Mimi Jean is always a guaranteed one click for me but tbh I've been buying all my favorite authors books to support them BUT I haven't been reading at all since 2020. All the books have sat unread until this book hit my kindle. I live in Pennsylvania, so I was interested in the setting of the book, I charged up my kindle, dug in and.... WOW! The story grabbed me and dragged me in and it felt like I was right there with Lake, in her creepy estate that she inherited with the weird disembodied voices, Bard the hot older caretaker, Master the loveable Great Dane, and the men chained to the wall in the painting in her grandmother's room. I was sucked in completely and can't wait for the next book!

The blurb on this one totally pulled me in and I thought how new and different, I've not read anything like this before, something unique!!! YAY!!!
    (minor spoilers ahead)
It took me a bit to get on board with Lake, she seemed really naïve or silly at times and I thought, wake up to yourself Lake, ask more questions and demand answers or something. Seemed to like to bury her head in the sand a bit at first. Its not till she is in the thick of things that she decides she needs answers. I felt bad for her though as her family and friends let her down by lying to her and not telling her about the huge responsibilities that await her on her grandma's death, I mean keeping human kind safe, kinda a big deal!
Lots of interesting characters and species of beings that live in this other world and she has to wade through who she can and can't trust. Being the first book there is a lot of world building happening.
This one is told in Lake's POV only and is very light on the romance, well with none actually, as I wouldn't consider her becoming addicted to a vampire unwillingly as romance.
Wall Men was a relatively quick read and there is a cliffhanger which was unexpected, book 2 is already out but I don't find myself in any rush to go grab it, I most likely will at some stage though.

Very well written with an amazing fast pace, you'd not be able to put the book down!! So many delicate humors, and some gag worthy details which only indicate how good this author is in what she's doing to her readers!!

Also loved the characters' appearance from other books!!

Can't wait for the rest of the series!

If I wasn't already familiar with the author I'm not sure I would've been drawn to a book called Wall Men. Dry stones & building sites spring to mind. Our heroine Lake Norfolk sounds like a UK tourist spot, but that is the least of her worries as she inherits a crumbling house when her grandmother dies. Lake finds herself questioning everything she has been told as she is pulled into another world. I found the book had shades of Anne Rice but Mimi's snarky humour was still present despite the darker tone.
