Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Smith (Just As I Am) provides all the standard elements of inspirational chick lit in this first installment of the Sister-to-Sister series. Joan has been dumped by her long-term boyfriend, lives at home, has an unexciting job and can't quite figure out what to do with her life, until a single doctor (who is of course terribly good-looking and very serious about his faith) moves in next door. As the title suggests, Joan is the middle daughter and feels dwarfed by her older sister's happy family and her younger sister's beauty and success. She struggles with feeling abandoned by her father and angry that her mother forced him to leave when she was young. She wonders if there's more depth to her faith than she initially thought, and learns more about God from her new doctor friend. And she tries hard to take care of her elderly grandmother to prevent her from being sent to an assisted living home, though that may prove to be the best place for her after all. Naturally, this is the realm of happy endings, and readers won't be disappointed. The sisters are spirited and fun, and if the story takes a while to get going, it soon quickens the pace and entertains. (Feb.)

I really enjoyed reading Stuck in the Middle (Sister-to-Sister #1)! It started out a bit slow, but as you read on and learn more about the 3 sisters, Joan, Tori and Allie, you get a better handle on the story.

Allie is the older sister, beautiful, blonde, married, in love and expecting a baby.

Tori is the younger sister, beautiful, blonde, single, has a great high end job and lives in an expensive apartment.

Joan, single, brunette, still lives in the home she grew up in, with her Mother and Grandmother, works at a furniture store. She likes her job, but feels like something is missing in her life.

In comes the talk of the neighborhood, someone is moving into the house across the street from Joan. And it's Grace, the grandmother that finds out WHO it is. A young man, who turns out to be a doctor! And single! The wheels are already spinning in Grace's head, hoping that Joan would meet a nice young man and get out more.

Joan does a regular run/jog every morning, and one morning, she met up with her neighbor Ken, who has a dog. A HUGE dog! The dog, Trigger, takes a liking right away, and he listens to Joan when she commands him to go 'down'. As soon as Joan finds out that HE is the new neighbor, she becomes embarrassed by how dumpy she looks. She wasn't expecting to run into such a handsome man while on her run. So introductions were made, and that was that…until…..

Joan's sisters Allie and Tori were told about the nice new neighbor, and right away, they want to go meet him! Joan was beside herself with embarrassment and wouldn't go out with the girls. Allie she didn't have to worry about because she was very happily married and pregnant. Tori now, oh boy! She asked Ken all sorts of questions while batting her eyelashes at him. Joan was furious that her sister was actually flirting with Ken! She saw him first she thought. When they returned, they were both beaming with news of a dinner invitation to dinner for Ken at their house!

Plans were made that Allie was taking Joan clothes shopping, so she'll look really good on the night of the dinner. They both already KNEW that Tori was gonna look like a million bucks, and Allie wanted Joan to look even better. Dinner day rolls around and Joan and Tori both ogle one another when they see how good the other sister looks. Oh my how the sparks do fly haha.

While everyone is seated and conversation is being made around the dinner table, the topic of religion came up. Grace invited Ken to go to church with them on Sunday, which he accepted. They found that Ken is in fact, a deeply religious man. He believes in God as the Father.

Now, without giving any more of this story away, let me just say that altho I myself am not a 'deeply religious' person, I found this story to be a very enjoyable read. I think you will too. :)

See for yourself, and you be the judge. Enjoy!

I liked this book because it was both poignant and funny, and both types of scenes were handled really well. I was laughing one page and crying the next.

It started off a bit slow for my taste, but I tend to like faster-paced books. However, after the first third of the book, the pace picked up a lot and I couldn't put the book down.

The relationship between the family members is handled so well--subtle, emotional, complex, never cheesy. The sisters clash with each other but love each other fiercely. Same with Joan's relationship with her mother and her grandmother. The family dynamics were both fun and emotionally satisfying for me.

I really liked how the story showed a girl who's grown up going to church but doesn't really have a deep, personal relationship with Christ. Her wonder at Ken and Karen's faith is very realistic, and Ken and Karen are never preachy or in-your-face about their relationships with God. As Joan comes to know and understand God, it's handled with so much grace, with cleverness and real empathy. I loved it.

Readers in their twenties and up will enjoy this. I'd give this to any high school student, too, because a lot of the issues Joan had with her sisters are things I've heard my youth group girls complain about their own siblings. Although, some of the other issues might be a bit out of their reader demographic since one sister is pregnant and the younger one is already out of college, and their mother is dealing with some issues with the grandmother.

All in all, a very satisfying read. I can't wait for the next installment of the Sanderson sisters.

At first I just put this book on my kindle bc of the idea that it was a 'free' listing and didn't read it right away. I started reading this off and on a few days ago and found it to be a fantastic book. I thought it was interesting all the way through. I loved all the characters in the book, especially Joan! I would recommended it to anyone that doesn't mind some religion. In fact I have told my sister that this is a must read! This was the first book by this author that I had ever read and based on this book I will definitely read another.

I read it on a special, so it was either free of just 99 cents. Didn't realize it was a religious book until I started it. It was sweet, I finished it and was thinking it was a nice start to someone's career, than realize this is an already established author which means it's probably not getting any better.

The main character is a bit immature. The story is nice, nothing spectacular. The writing is simple. Nothing out of the blue happens. Since it's a christian book it ends with a kiss, so safe for a young person to read. Nothing graphic.

Just, not very outstanding. Editing was fine.

I had no idea what to expect reading this book. I was charmed. I loved the way the sisters reacted to each other and how no matter what was thrown at them, their love for each other and family was prevalent. At times I got chocked up because of the deep stirrings in Joan's heart she was starting to feel. I related to the fact that we have all been at one time in a place where our faith was difficult to talk about. You could honestly feel her anxiety of how she viewed herself, her relationships, what she believed and how she could change. I thought this book did a great job on how one person can make a difference and that reaching out of our comfort zone is tough but worth it. I look forward to reading more about Joan and how God uses her, but I also look forward to reading about how God will change her sisters. And the love story included isn't bad either, it's told perfectly with respect and beliefs for what we should all strive for.

I love how the main character starts a journey to a new, different, better life. She reconnects with her mother, finds love, a purpose and healing, while getting closer to God and accepting him as her father.
The story is continued in the second and third book of the series that tell us more about her sisters, Allie and Tori, and how their lives change for the better, when they each have a personal encounter with their loving Father, God.
I really loved this book and the sequels and read the first one in just two sittings ^^
I hope and look forward to reading more in that style by Virginia Smith!

4.0 out of 5 stars A clean romance with not a lot of surprises, but a refreshing change from the typical non-Christian romances.
Reviewed in Canada on August 27, 2015
This is a sweet, clean story which brings some smiles as one sees the relationship between the three sisters, Allie, Joan and Tori and thinks back about one's own life and the competition between sisters and also cousins in the same age category, who compete for the same eligible men, and yes, many a young lady has dressed up elegantly for church services when rumour has it that a handsome young man or two will be in attendance. The competition in church and in church related events can become quite fierce. :)

The part of this story that I actually enjoyed the most though was the parts of the story which described the sister's aging grandmother. She was delightful and I sympathized with her as she tried so hard to make herself useful in the household, and as she longed for more companionship with others her own age. The end result for her was perfect, and I was happy to see that Joan did eventually see how selfish she was acting, and how entitled she was behaving.

The part of the story which I found much too predictable was the "romantic" part, which didn't really bring any surprises to the reader. Life doesn't really always end with such perfection.
