I was searching for something interesting as I lay in rehab with a fractured ankle. This book has something for everyone who loves horror. Some stories were drabble and some were long I loved the Martian story best.

This is one of those delightful but, alas, too-rare books: a short story anthology. The stories are supernatural horror, and their diversity is winning. They range from long stories to super-short ones; the protagonists range from sweethearts to unutterable scumbags; and there are stories about ghosts, monstrosities, mental patients, nearly everything you can imagine--even a story about zombies (which, being only the ten-millionth zombie/vampire/werewolf story ever written, should by definition have been crap, but is actually quite good). The book is very enjoyable even to someone who doesn't usually read supernatural horror, and I gave it four stars only because I normally don't. For avid readers of supernatural horror, especially those tired of the same old thing, this is a five-plus-star book that is very reasonbably priced.

I had an issue with my Kindle Keyboard reading this story: the little square button didn't let me navigate quickly between the starts of stories, even though with other Kindle books that have chapters I can do so easily. That could be related to a bad download, or the conversion process, or the original manuscript's formatting. I also spotted one wrong word choice and one missing comma--but that's all, in quite a long book. Overall, this is a highly professional product that does credit to independent authors.

A short story anthology such as this one, with its potential diversity of content, might be the ticket to lifting the supernatural horror genre out of its doldrums. I'm glad I bought and read this book.

I am a true fan of Mr. Allinotte. He creates rich characters and places them in clever situations. Chris pulls you into the protagonist and then twists the scenario to horror. You fall for and feel for the characters."The Dollmaker and The Rat" may be my favorite. I guess I'll have to read it all over again.

Chris Allinotte's Gathering Darkness is a paperback and eBook of short horror stories in the entertaining mould of The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt.

You have to approach the book expecting to laugh as much as to get golf-ball size goosebumps popping up all over the place. Although the first story, Coming Home, is freaky, it doesn't set the tone for the rest of the book. It's seriousness is soon overtaken by excellent comedy shrieks, especially in the book's centrepiece story Devil's Night, involving a Ronald Reagan mask, gnomes, a Halloween skeleton and a trick or treat choice enough to make you quickly shove your own head over the sink to avoid carpet stains.

Sick humour prevails, from the excellent The Moustache (a brilliant way to commemorate Movember) and Game Night, to the Alice in Wonderland perverting Eat Me. It's not just the humour, however. If you like inventive ways to meet your maker the book has them in spades. How about having hot steamy sex with a spider? Then have a gander at Sex and Beer. Trapped inside a crystal ball? Frosted Glass is for you then.

Not all of them are successful. I was really disappointed by Turn Around. Its premise was so good, about something following the main character which he can never see, but always feels ready to play tricks on him and cause him to go nuts, had an ending so loopy I couldn't get over the disappointment. Well, I could, because further cracking tales followed.

It is highly recommended if you like to get scared, but want to laugh at the same time. It is not recommended if your idea of horror is Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.

A sound collection of tales from the pen of Mr Allinotte. I make no secret I love a good story and this collection is crammed with unique enticing tales from the start to the very end. The versatility and variety in his writing coupled with such unique stories and intelligent wit is what makes this a winner in my book. If this is not on your Kindle wish list then it should be. Get the Gathering darkness and get sucked in. Oh by the way "There is nothing in the box" ;)

So many themes in these stories resonated with me on so many levels. Chris taps into a lot of the primal fears we all carry with us, whether we’re conscious of it or not. I also enjoyed reading his notes at the end, and found myself often thinking, really? You too? ;-)

The collection of works is a great showcase for Mr. Allinotte's fantastic imagination. The works range from poetry to one-pagers to short stories and cover a dizzying array of topics. I'm not even a fan of the horror genre, but I genuinely enjoyed seeing what each new work would have in store for me. I'd strongly recommend this for anyone looking for something new and unexpected, or for inspiration for their own creative side.

Gathering Darkness is a collection of short stories by Chris Allinotte, I love reading short stories, especially, weird, scary, supernatural ones. I never could get enough of Twilight Zone, Tales of the Unexpected. Books like Stephen Kings `Skeleton Crew' there is just so much fun to be had reading short spooky stories, one after the other, while curled up in your armchair on a dark night.
Original and beautifully written, I can't wait for more.
