Review
"White Sands Gold by Mike Torreano is a classic Western story set in the late 18th century in New Mexico, America. The story starts with Yancy, who is searching Victoria mountain for the pile of gold his father died trying to find. He discovers a hidden entrance but is buried beneath stone rubble before he can finish exploring the cave. Back at home, his twin sister Lottie waits for him, knowing full well that people come back from the mountain empty-handed or they don't come back at all.
The story does one thing and does it well - it's a Western. There are dry plains, guns, plenty of horse-riding, and some shoot-outs, and the scene wouldn't be complete without a failing ranch in the middle of nowhere that no one visits without a purpose. While the story sticks to its roots, it nonetheless shows that it was written recently. There are several protagonists sharing the spotlight, and one of them is a strong woman who never relies on a man if she doesn't have to. There are men who are cool but are open about their feelings at the same time. And there's also a matriarch who doesn't need to raise her voice to assert dominance in a room of rowdy boys.
The plot is thrilling, the characters are lively, and even the romantic subplot is slow and steady, making it seem more believable than a rushed romance just to include romance. Both pairs are on equal footing in the relationship, which is also very nice to see, especially since the story is set in a time when women had much less power than men. It is a great intro to western literature for anyone interested in these kinds of stories but not knowing where to start.
White Sands Gold is a captivating historical Western mystery that gives readers everything they love about the old west. With characters that are relatable, readers will be engaged and invested in the story's outcome. This is a novel readers will think about after the story is done."

About the author
Mike Torreano is an award-winning author who writes historical fiction and western mysteries set in mid-to-late 19th century America. Growing up in Ohio, he developed a love for the Old West during grade school when he read every Zane Grey novel he could lay his hands on. His favorite authors/poets in this genre are Grey, Louis L'amour, Jack London, and Robert Service.
The Reckoning is his first published novel-thank you, The Wild Rose Press! Set in Colorado during 1868, it's a tale of murdered parents, a sister's disappearance, the love of a feisty landlady and a son's revenge.
The sequel to The Reckoning is The Renewal, same setting in South Park, Colorado four years later. Another western mystery in traditional who-dun-it mode. Railroad land grabs ignite Ike McAlister and local ranchers' resistance. A shocking murder leads to all-out war.
His third western, A Score To Settle, is a tale of romance and greed that follows the same cattle trail in 1870 New Mexico Territory that inspired Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove.
White Sands Gold is his most recent western mystery. Does the fabled gold really exist? What is the relic? Who's going to find it first and at what cost? And what really happens at the end?
Mike has a short story called The Trade published in an anthology. It's based on his grandfather's time in the Yukon Gold Rush from 1898-1900. The idea grew from the kernel of a story his mother shared with him about a dramatic incident his grandfather experienced there.
His most recently-released novel is titled Fireflies At Dusk. Set during the Civil War era, it's a coming-of-age tale of a young man who throws off his pacifist upbringing and joins the Union Army. The war strips him of his self-respect and he must decide whether to undertake a gritty journey during harsh combat to reclaim it--and his sweetheart.

So I'd encourage you to ditch any negative preconceived notions you might have about stories set in the old west and read this book. You'll be impressed with how the suspense can be created in a story that doesn't involve last-minute cell phone evidence or DNA analyses, proving again that it all rests on the elements of the story and the skill of the storyteller. This book wins on both counts!
