When Summer Never Came: A Pride & Prejudice Variation (Pride and Prejudice "What if?" Variations) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 666 ratings

In this Pride & Prejudice variation, a worldwide disaster of epic proportions causes Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet to meet under extraordinary circumstances. In this retelling of Jane Austen's famous work, will Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth find their happily ever after?

In April 1815, the volcano Mount Tambora erupted in Indonesia. It affected the climate so that in 1816, there was cold and snow throughout the summer all across the world.

How would Pride & Prejudice be different if it had erupted ten years earlier, drastically altering the climate across the world? Would Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy still find one another in a year when summer never came?

Elizabeth Bennet has just experienced one of the most difficult years of her entire life. The loss of a beloved sister, a failed harvest, and the threat of freezing to death from a bitterly cold winter cause the inhabitants of Longbourn to do the unthinkable.

Meanwhile, Fitzwilliam Darcy is desperate to keep his family and his tenants alive. The scarcity of food due to a freezing summer has him taking extreme measures. His radical idea takes him, along with his friend Charles Bingley, to Netherfield, where his drastic experiment has the potential to save them all – or ruin his life forever.

Will the changed circumstances cause Elizabeth and Darcy to come together in unity? Or will his pride and her prejudice remain alive in spite of the terrible circumstances that are a result of the year without summer?

When Summer Never Came is a full-length, sweet regency romance novel of 130,000 words that is a variation of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. Unlike Tiffany Thomas's other novels, this one does not have a trigger warning.

Praise for WHEN SUMMER NEVER CAME

“This is one of those books you stay up all night to read, and then have to read again.” – Linda

“Oh my goodness, I am LOVING this story! I love how you’re able to produce tension in a way that’s consistent with the original characters and setting.” – Courtenay

“I love reading wonderful plots like this when I feel like yelling at the character to do what I think is right.” – Anonymous

“Wow, just wow. You are such an excellent writer. You have a great imagination.” – Lisa

“I love your story! It is so original and different from the usual Pride & Prejudice fanfiction without being a lengthy and exhaustingly detailed read. The characters are incredible well-written: credible, consistent, fleshed out, and adapted to the storyline without becoming out of character or obnoxiously self-righteous.” – Renee

“What a wonderful story! I wondered at the topic, but you made it so interesting.” - Colleen

“I really like your story. You write about a very real and terrifying thing most regency fiction completely ignores or makes it out as a fairytale winter with snow and ice skating.” - Anonymous

“Just lovely. I really enjoyed this story, evening the angst-y parts. The overall struggle for survival and everyone working together at the beginning was inspiring. And in the later part, the rather public travails of Darcy, as he learns to consider other people, added a believable tension.” - Megan

The author takes a actual historical event and writes a novel of "what ifs" pretaining to the event of a volcano erupting. Winter sets in, and summer never came, so there isn't any produce growing, land is barren, food is scarce, animals are dying, the weather is cold, the sun isn't shinning, snow is on the ground, tenants can't pay their rent and things progress to get worse.
Darcy come to Netherfield to help Bingley and inspires him that they do a joint venture to plant Russian winter wheat. They include Mr. Bennet and then inturn Mr. Gardner gets involved and also tells Darcy & Bingley about feeding rice from Portugal that the Bennet sisters thought of to use as a filler for their soup.
Problems arise, and their struggles through this time when it is so cold that they share rooms and close off rooms to not waste their resources. Jane gets close to BIngley, Elizabeth gets close to Darcly and Mary gets close to Mr. Goulding.
Relatives of the Bennet family move in with the care of Mrs. Bennet who kept grieving the loss of their daughter, Catherine, Kitty as they called her. Then Mr. Gardner then moved his family from London dlue to the looting and trouble in London.
There was a barter system with food supplies between the tenants, then thely also got the rice to stretch the food supply.
Mr. Collins never made it to visit Mr. Bennet and passed away on his way to visit but no one knew he died luntil they were notified by Anne deBough. Mr. Bennet, Ellizabetlh and Lydia went to claim his things and lhe lived in filth and have save very much money that went to the Bennets.
Eventually the winter wheat was harvested, money was made with the wheat.
the Bennet girls married, Jane to Bingley, Elizabeth to Darcy, Mary to Goulding, and Lydia eventually married Richard Fitzwilliam. Mr. Gardner sold his business in town and moved his wife to Derbyshire as she always wanted to live where she grew up.
This is a brief story of this wonderful novel. there were many trials these people endured with the cold, snow and no summer to make a living.
It gives you thought of what you would have to endure should that happen again!

When a volcano erupted causing a temporary climate changed. Summer turns into winter destroying crops and livestock. See how Bennetts and Darcys coped with this issue. In mist of this a relationship grow between Elizabeth and Darcy. Yet there are inner conflicts between duty to one heritage and happiness.

I really enjoyed the beginning, how both families were able solved the problems of food and shelter. However, this wain in the second half. The characterization of Darcy were exceptional well developed. You feel his struggles between his love for Elizabeth and his duty to Pemberley and its tenants. I found Elizabeth characterization were also well developed. I thought she were too critical when it came to Darcy. I liked Mr Bennett, he took his responsibilities to his family and tenants seriously.

I wished there was more of Mr Hurst, Charlotte, and Miss Bingley. It’s seem after the death of Louise they were no longer needed in the story. I feel the issue between Wickham and Miss Bingley was an afterthought.

Overall I really enjoyed this variation, I will read more from this author. I highly recommend it.

Tiffany Thomas has added another original creation to her oeuvre of very unique, yet canon respectful stories.

When Summer Never Came grabbed me from the beginning and I had a hard time putting it down. It’s a full length novel and there were a couple times I wanted the pacing to pick up. But looking back at each instance along the way my belief in the author’s intent was restored. The factual basis of stories from those disastrous years could have made the book last even longer. I think it was important to depict how these issues effected all our dearest characters in a very realistic way since it was considered as an equal character in the whole story.

Without spoiling things for the reader, I will just describe what I thought the overriding plot was and that was change. The wish to, and the willingness to change for our dear couple was central. But there was a lot of change that happened, by necessity, by circumstance, by difficult experiences and by love. There we several sweet sub plots the watch and enjoy.

I rounded up a 4.5 to a 5. There were some minor editing errors that annoyed but not enough to take away an entire point. I highly recommend this to any JAFF lover.

This story explored such an interesting concept, and left me wondering what such a year must have felt like to those that lived through it. Elizabeth and Darcy’s story is strong and believable, and even Wickham gets a fresh look. A truly enjoyable read.

A good read and a fine way to spend a rainy day. The characters developed well and there was a decent plot. It did make me wonder how on earth the people managed when this event really happened. It must have been frightening to suddenly have your life turned upside down by natural events beyond your control.

I would appreciate it though if authors would have a look at a map of England. As a point in case they are travelling from Derbyshire to Hertfordshire and we get this:-
“They had determined to go straight through to Hertfordshire, as opposed to staying in London…”
NO, NEVER, Hertfordshire is North of London and always has been, not in the south. They would need to go straight through Hertfordshire to get to London.

Also if they are at Longbourn how on earth could “Elizabeth and Lydia made frequent trips to Lambton…”

3.0 out of 5 stars when summer never came
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 22, 2022
I looked up the events surrounding the eruption of Krakatoa and found that affected the whole world, so presumably the Russian wheat and the Portuguese rice crop failed as well. Goodness knows how people survived world-wide but obviously some did. I also think that while it’s ok to elevate Col. Fitzwilliam’s military military rank as this is a work of fiction, it’s really not ok to alter historical fact, such as the manner of Napoleon Bonaparte’s death. He was not assassinated by a disgruntled associate, but died of a stomach ulcer while in exile on the island of Elba. Not that this makes the slightest difference to the story as a work of fiction, but I hope readers might get the point.
