About the authors
Freelance writer, novelist, award-winning screenwriter, editor, poker player, poet, biker, Travis Heermann is a graduate of the Odyssey Writing Workshop, an Active member of SFWA and the HWA, and the author of the Tokyo Blood Magic, The Hammer Falls, The Ronin Trilogy, and other novels. His more than thirty short stories appear in Baen Books’ anthology Straight Outta Deadwood, plus Apex Magazine, Tales to Terrify, Fiction River, Cemetery Dance’s Shivers VII, and others. As a freelance writer, he has contributed a metric ton of work to such game properties as Firefly Roleplaying Game, Legend of Five Rings, EVE Online, and BattleTech, for which he’s been nominated for a Scribe Award.
He enjoys cycling, collecting martial arts styles and belts, torturing young minds with otherworldly ideas, and monsters of every flavor, especially those with a soft, creamy center.
Lisa is also the author of four national best-selling YA novels (The Hourglass Door trilogy and After Hello) as well as several short stories and novellas. She has also edited multiple anthologies about magical creatures. She graduated with honors from the University of Utah, and currently lives in Taylorsville, Utah, with her husband, Tracy.
She has also worked in the publishing industry since 1997. She is currently the Managing Editor for Shadow Mountain Publishing and has worked with several New York Times best-selling authors, including Ally Condie, Brandon Mull, and Jason F. Wright. While fiction is her first love, she also has experience working with nonfiction projects (memoir, educational, cookbooks, etc.) and some children’s picture books.
Robert J. McCarter is the author of more than ten novels and over a hundred short stories. He is a regular contributor to Pulphouse Fiction Magazine and his short fiction has also appeared in The Saturday Evening Post, Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, Everyday Fiction, and numerous anthologies.
Robert writes in a variety of genres from contemporary fantasy to science fiction and just about everything in between. His diverse background–including a career in software engineering, growing up on a ranch riding horses, and acting–colors the stories he tells.
He lives in the mountains of Arizona with his amazing wife and his ridiculously adorable dogs.
I’m a mommy, writer, lawyer who lives on a farm with too many animals (according to my husband). Eleven years ago, I convinced my poor condo-raised husband to move from the city to a horse farm. He agreed because it was my dream. If I could clone him, I’d make a fortune. Although, he still get testy when I call him “Zsa Zsa.”
I was born in Boston, MA but moved to Virginia for college, and never left. I wish someone had told me that I could write professionally. It would have saved me a lot of years closet writing. Benedict (the white cat in my photos) has been my writing buddy for the last few years. He's a tough editor. In my day job, I’m a partner in a small law firm based in the Washington, D.C. Metro area. My practice is mostly business law and litigation. I finally get to write after 9pm when the kids are in bed and the critters have wound down for the night. My life is hectic, but I wouldn’t trade it.
Stories about characters that live . . . and love.
Brandon M. Lindsay grew up in the Seattle area and lives in Tokyo, Japan. He now has a son, whom he is trying to teach how to slay dragons. It's a work in progress.

By day, Scott is a Champion of software quality, breaking code and squashing bugs. By night, he’s a slinger of fantastical words, creator of places and people undreamt, and smith of heroic tales.
Oh, and an adviser/coach/fanatic for competitive youth bowling. Ask him about it…he dares you.
When drawing fanfic graphic novels was no longer fulfilling enough as a teen, Jordan ventured to greater adventures in storytelling. Now, when he isn't busy saving the world through the trusty arsenal called "video games," the author fancies spending time writing about exciting worlds untouched by man.
Jordan writes Young Adult science fiction and fantasy. He also spearheads the Stories For Nerds online community, where avid sci-fi and fantasy readers can connect with authors who are inspired by all modern forms of media, including, books, video games, movie, television, anime, and all other forms of nerd entertainment. Katie Cross grew up in the mountains of Idaho, where she still loves to play when she gets the chance.
Her mission is connect women with their best selves, to seek the divine in each one of us, and to prove that we can love ourselves—and accomplish all—despite opposition.
If she's not writing, you can find her traveling, adventuring with her kiddos, trail running with her husband and vizla dogs, or curled up with a good book and a cup of chai.

John D. Payne grew up in the American Midwest, watching the lightning flash outside his window and imagining himself as everything from a leaf in the wind to the god of thunder. Today, he lives with his wife and family in the shadow of the Organ Mountains in New Mexico, where he imagines that with enough concentration he might be able to rustle up a little cloud cover for some shade.
His debut novel, The Crown and the Dragon, is now a major motion picture produced by Arrowstorm Entertainment. A lover of all kinds of books, John also publishes short stories in various speculative fiction genres as well as literary fiction. His work can also be found in anthologies such as Dragon Writers, edited by Lisa Mangum, and Tides of Impossibility, edited by K.J. Russell and C. Stuart Hardwick.

Gregory D. Little is the author of the Unwilling Souls, Mutagen Deception, and Bell Begrudgingly Solves It series. As a writer, you would think he could find a better way to sugarcoat the following statement, but you'd be wrong. So, just to say it straight, he really enjoys tricking people. As such, one of his greatest joys in life is laughing maniacally whenever he senses a reader has reached That Part in one of his books. Fantasy, sci-fi, horror, it doesn't matter. They all have That Part. You'll know it when you get to it, promise. Or will you? He lives in Virginia with his wife, and he is uncommonly fond of spiders.
Kristin Luna has been making up stories and getting in trouble for them since elementary school. She especially loves young adult literature, fantasy, Nic Cage, literary fiction, and wouldn’t even be opposed to reading yeti erotica. She has written book reviews for Urban Fantasy Magazine, writes for the blog The Fictorians, and her short stories have appeared on Pseudopod and in anthologies published by WordFire Press. She lives in San Diego with her husband Nic and eats way too much Taco Bell. Stay up-to-date at kristinleighluna.com
Jess Bennett writes urban and dark fantasy, romance, and speculative fiction with an emphasis on diversity. Their stories feature powerful women, powerful magic, and plenty of things that go bump in the night.
Their published work includes the short story "Vengeance for Dinner", co-written with Emily Godhand, which is featured in A Game of Horns: A Red Unicorn Anthology published by WordFire Press.
Jess makes good use of their Netflix subscription, enjoys stuffy historical tomes, and keeps an eye out for good romantic UF novels to pad out their ebook collection.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2021A wide variety of well written stories are available in this book, all having something to do with a red unicorn. It was a great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2018Couldn't even make it all the way through the book, some stories I started and then skipped because they just weren't very fun to read... the only story that was somewhat enjoyable to read was the first one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2016I love a good anthology with good authors. This is both!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2019Amazingly creative stories and so much fun to read! First of all, Jody Lynn Nye: enough said there! Excellent as always. Quite a few new authors that I had never read, all good. Laughed out loud at the story “Customer Hotline.” Heart out to heroine in “The Sharpest Horn.” Totally worth it, a great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2019A solid anthology featuring lots of wonderful stories that make it hard to distinguish the difference between the established writers from the up and coming ones. Definitely worth your time and money!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2016This is a great read from some incredible authors, some established, many up and coming. One of the best anthologies I've read. It's perfect when you have a half an hour to kill and want to get lost for a bit.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2016Wonderful authors. I was fortunate and had obtained my copy at the Salt Lake Comic Con. The authors were there to sign it. It is an amazing book and fantastic experience. I know you will love this book. Enjoy.
