The Soul Weaver (Bridge of D'Arnath) Kindle Edition
The Prince of Avonar is in desperate straits.
Betrayal devastates his plan to defeat the vile Lords of Zhev’Na without violence, and then a ruthless attack leaves his beloved wife near death.
As frustration and anger shake the fragile joining of the Prince’s body and soul, war engulfs his magical realm.
Sixteen-year-old Gerick, half-crazed with nightmare visions, pursued by past horror and his father’s wrath, flees beyond the boundaries of the known worlds. In a sunless realm of misshapen misfits, he discovers unlikely purpose and a devastating clue to the brokenness within himself.
With three worlds on the brink of ruin, the Prince and his son must look deep inside themselves to discover the truth of their enemies—a mystery bound up in Gerick’s emerging magic, a world newborn from chaos, and a whisper buried deep in Dar’Nethi legend.
"This is Gerick’s story and we quickly learn this is a different young man from the child that we saw in Guardians Of The Keep. The past does not lie quiet in Gerick, with his nightmares and fears of a corruption that could hurt those he loves. Plots and counterplots [will] intrigue the reader with surprise twists and turns. Fans of The Bridge Of D’Arnath will welcome this addition to the saga."—Colleen Cahill, SFRevu
"Intriguing…Well written . Gerick is one of Berg’s most interesting characters and probably my favorite."—Fantasy Literature
"Very good…read Son of Avonar and Guardians of the Keep first."—Booklist

About the author
Who would ever imagine that someone who majored in math so she wouldn't have to write papers would produce fifteen epic fantasy novels? I tell people that writing is "the hobby that ate my life." I grew up in Texas in a family of teachers, musicians, and railroad men, taught math for a while, but worked as a software engineer for much longer. I have degrees in mathematics from Rice University and computer science from the University of Colorado. I live, camp, hike, and bike with my husband in the Colorado Rockies. My books have won the Prism Award, the Geffen Award, and multiple Colorado Book Awards. I was truly honored and humbled when my duology, Flesh and Spirit and Breath and Bone, was awarded the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature. My name now sits on a list with the very authors whose works sit on my bookshelves: Tolkien, McKillip, Le Guin, Anderson, Kushner, et al. This is the way fantasy series ought to be and rarely are. Tight well written prose, a bit of romance but no bursting bodices, a lot of action with interesting characters who develop and change as the books progress. It's definitely one of the best fantasy series I've read. I'm enjoying the 4th book in the series -- currently the final one -- and enjoying it as much as I did the first one, even though they are seriously cutting into my sleep time, it's worth it. If you love this genre you'll love this series. I hope Ms. Berg will write a couple more of these, but if not, I look forward to whatever she writes next.
Loved her "Mage" series, too ... It was brilliant!
Each of her series has been unique and original ... no cloned ideas for this author. Her worlds are well-constructed, carefully crafted and logical within their designed parameters. It's not easy to come up with new and different ideas in this over-worked genre. This is a winning series and definitely worth your time.
Start reading early unless you can sleep late the next day!
In THE SOUL WEAVER, Gerick undergoes a long healing process to purge his mind of the influence of the evil Lords. On another plot path, Prince D'Natheil must solve some murder mysteries and battle an intense resurgence of Zhid attacks on Avonar. And we get some new characters. Not that any of Berg's characters lack magnetism, I was particularly attracted to the new Preceptor, Ven'Dar. He is a preeminent practitioner of the sorcery known as Word Winding.
I insist on describing a flaw in writing style that was absent from the first two volumes. This is the spirit of levity that is injected in the narration of Gerick's adventure in the magical world of the Bounded. It was reminiscent of the flippancy invoked by Frank Baum in his WIZARD OF OZ series. Though the sojourn in the Bounded was only a part of the novel, the levity was inappropriate, and if the whole novel had been written that way, I would give it only one or two stars. Fortunately the weak part is balanced by Berg's normal style of narration in other parts and by a strong, meticulously polished denouement. Nevertheless, I think I should reserve a five-star rating for a book that is pleasing from beginning to end.
Karon/D'Natheil and Gerick are the keys to this tale. What makes this novel intriguing is the energy the plot takes from a simple question: how does a sensitive gifted leader choose between the good and the evil uses of his talents. For Karon/D'Nathiel, the challenge is how to maintain his deepest soul-nature as a Healer while living the role of the heroic warrior Prince. For Gerick, now at the age where his true magical gift has started to emerge, the test is how to protect others from dangerous incidents that ominously suggest that the boy who is also Dieste the Destroyer remains linked to his immortal enemies, the evil Lords of Zha'Nev.
The Soul Weaver is a puzzle story where the most crucial tests of the father and son protagonists concerns how they and their ideals can survive a dangerous, literally soul-stealing war. This is a thoughtful and thought-provoking novel that should become fantasy classic and which will definitely provoke its share of serious late night discussions.

After having spent months imprisoned by the evil Lords of Zhev'Na, Gerick has no sooner settled into life as a free man than he is accused of treason. Fleeing from facing execution as the fourth Lord of ZhevNa, he takes refuge in a strange land, inhabited by outcasts claiming him to be their king. Seri, mysteriously wounded is unable to help Gerick whilst Karon, convinced of Gerick's guilt, is facing the backlash in Avonar.
The book centres around Gerick and Karon with Paulo again very much part of the story. As always, interesting new characters are introduced. Roxanne with the temper, Radele, the idealist and Van'Dar who seems to be too gallant and smart for his own good, to name but a few. The story constantly changes from one persons viewpoint to another and proceeds at a fast pace all the way through before reaching a satisfying end.
All in all another very enjoyable read that will make you look forward to the next book in the series.
In this book Gerick and Karon are the main characters. Seri has become less visible (still present though).
On the D'Arnath side of the bridge betrayal and deaths cause Karon to suspect that his son is still one of the Lords of Zhev'Na. This suspicion is not healthy for his Karon personality and his violent side as the prince D'Arnath takes over more and more. A confrontation seems imminent.
On the mundane side of the bridge, Gerrick is having strange dreams. People disappear out of the blue, usually people with physical disabilities. Three people show themselves to Gerrick. Somehow they seem connected with the disappearances as well as connected with the magical side of the bridge of D'Arnath. Gerrick feels that in order to redeem himself in his father's eyes, he has to find a way to contact these three personages.
This book was an enjoyable read. Gerrick and Karon were presented with depth. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in fantasy.
