4.6 out of 5 stars 1,455 ratings

From USATODAY Bestselling author Eva Devon, writing as Maire Claremont, comes a brand new series that will sweep you away to the drama and angst of Regency England. Glittering ballrooms, wild moors, and brooding lords waiting to be tamed by bluestockings await. . .

Can one ball change a bluestocking’s life and mend a beast’s broken heart?

Scarred and sarcastic, the Earl of Argyle has abandoned society, choosing to live alone, away from Scotland in his London townhouse. But he needs an heir. Throwing a ball to find a woman who might be able to endure being married to someone so brutalized by war. . . He never imagined he could find the perfect woman in Miss Rosalind Worthing. The surprisingly tart young lady prefers hiding in the shadows, scribbling away as the ton dances in his glittering ballroom.

But surely, a lady could never, ever love a beast like him. . .

USATODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR, Eva Devon, was raised on literary fiction, but quite accidentally and thankfully, she was introduced to romance one Christmas by Johanna Lindsey's Mallory novella, The Present. A romance addict was born. She devoured every single Lindsey novel within a few months and moved on to contemporary and paranormal with gusto. Now, she loves to write her own roguish dukes, alpha males and the heroines who tame them.

What a lovely, lovely story. I fell totally in love with it. From the totally unpredictable, unusual first meeting of the main characters to the totally unusual ending!
Both Callum, the Earl of Argyle and Rosalind had such depth to them and were SO easy to be drawn into who there were and caring what happened to them.
Rosalind might have been forced to live a quiet life but dang, what an imaginative mind she had. And her real personality came out when she met Callum. There was boldness in her. Loved that about her. She also had kindness and understood things that had to do with pain. I loved her boldness when it came to her conditions to accepting his marriage proposal. It was outstanding!
Good thing that Rosalind understood pain because the Earl of Argyle had plenty of that. It was so well written when it came to his fear, pain and angst. It just made you want to see him get his happy ever after. Especially since he really was such a good man who had sacrificed so much.
I so enjoyed how Callum and Rosalind interacted as the story went on. Everything comes to a well earned end.
On a side note, I really would like to see what happens with Olivia. She is a cousin friend to Rosalind and does deserve her own story and happy ending.

The orphan, hiding in a corner at a ball, meets the Earl who is also hiding because he believes that his war scars make him hideous. They talk, he decides to make an offer as he has to marry someone. She is pushed into the marriage by her Aunt and Uncle. But they like and admire each other and get to know each other. She dives into life in Scotland. She encourages him to come out of hiding He supports her interests and ambition to write. This was a sweet story. And not a ton of sexy times on the page which is fine with me.

Loved the way that dire and difficult situations can work for good. Both Callum and Rosalind are sensitive, but strong people, who could recognize the pain and suffering in each other, that they individually went through in the past.
The unconditional love of Rosalind and her boldness, brought Callum out of his self-imposed prison.
The story flows and his tenderness towards her, makes me melt, as it demonstrates his love before he realized it.

I enjoyed reading about Callum and Rosalind, how they met to how they fell in love. The Earl of Argyle was disfigured when he rescued some women and children from a barn that had been set a flame during the war. He decided to host a ball to find a wife and he stumbled across her in one of his alcoves, she was reading a book hiding from everyone, they had a nice conversation. He decided he wanted to marry her so he went to ask her the next night, she had been told by her aunt she either accepts the proposal or she'll end up out in the streets. She made a bargain with him to take her to Scotland and to head there and get married on the way. I'm glad they got their HEA. I highly recommend this book! 👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤

Such a sweet story watching this man trapped by fear after being wounded and scarred in the napoleon war slowly learn how to be among people again and realize that he could be accepted as he was. All because of a brave, smart young woman who wasn't afraid to explore new things and brave challenges including marriage. Their love grew naturally as they learned about each other.

This author knows how to create characters that breathe, characters that come alive. For me, that is of utmost importance in a book. I must be able to believe the people I'm reading about are real, and Callum and Rosaline were REAL. Their lives sucked me in from the very beginning, and kept me with them 'til the very end. That said, I simply wanted more. I know, that's a good problem for an author to have, isn't it?! I would've liked to have seen Callum fleshed out more. I'd liked to have lived inside his past with him more, and gone into those places where he'd experienced all that pain with him. He was quite three-dimensional yet if the author had given her readers more of his back-story, wow, he'd've been a force to be reckoned with that would have literally jumped off the pages to never be forgotten! And Rosalind ... what a woman. I would've loved to have known more of her back-story, as well. Kept wanting to read about how her parents had died and left her, how she had been left with such thoughtless family, how she had managed to hold up and maneuver in such dire circumstances of life.

Usually I find that a book is simply too long, that there is too MUCH fluff included which could've been cut out. In this book, I kept wanting more. Maybe Ms. Eva Devon could consider a prequel, or some such just for this amazing couple?

It took me a while to warm up to the characters but once they were established I was hooked. I enjoyed the heroes journey from shut-in recluse to laird of the hall, with the easy acceptance of the heroine leading the way. Nice pace and even flow. I'm anxious to read more. Lovely ending.

I've not read any books by Eva Devon before, but after reading this one I know I shall read more!
I loved her writing style and the wonderful story that unfolded.
A quick and fast-paced read that didn't neglect the details or the interaction between the characters.

I loved how Callum and Rosalind respected one another and saw past each others 'flaws' and differences, understanding one another and talking things out rather than just bottling everything up.

The book is essentially a Beauty and the Beast retelling (which is one of my favourites). Callum is scarred from the war, burnt saving the women and children in Spain, and Rosalind is an orphan left to live with her aunt and uncle, and cousin. She loves her cousin and they have a lovely relationship, but her relations with her aunt and uncle are strained. They do the bare minimum for her. She likes to read and longs to write her own stories. Callum offers her the freedom to follow her dreams if she'll give him the heirs he needs. Neither expects to fall for the other.

A beautiful story unfolds. I loved their personalities and the chemistry.
I couldn't put this book down and finished it in a day.

Definitely recommend it to Historical romance and Beauty and the Beast retelling fans.

Very, very sweet love story. It's simple but true. It is beautifully written. It can be construed as a fairytale. The chemistry between the main characters was palpable from the beginning. This is the unravelling of the Hero's deep-seated belief that because he is hideously scarred, then that means he can not love and be loved. He condemned his life to solitude and pain. He carries a lot of anger in himself.

He found a loving wife in Rosalind. It was a fateful meeting. Rosalind was his avenging angel who fought his demons. He finally decides to marry for the sole purpose of progeny. Did he achieve what he longed for? Did he get his own fairytale after all the pain he had suffered? That's for you to find out.

What I like about this story is that it is fast-paced. There is no numbing, almost limitless discourse that keeps repeating, making me drowsy and bored. It is simply told, but there is so much soul put into the main characters, also the secondary ones.

I love this book. It can be something that I will read again through long winter nights.

This is my own opinion. Yours may vary.
