AMERICAN STRIFE: How Our Political System Led to Trumpism Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

Republicans have adopted Trumpism. Scott explains why Trumpism, a form of fascism, is a toxic brew of racism, sexism, and ethnonationalism. Trumpism rejects a majoritarian rule, allows loyalty to be substituted for merit as the primary qualification for officeholders, and embraces white Christian nationalism as a rationale for inclusion in the American Dream. Scott shows why the Republican Party's adoption of Trumpism is consistent with the party's history and does not simply reflect Trump. He shows how Trump, a psychologically damaged and deeply flawed man. Trump taught the party to stop trying to enlarge the base, but instead to cater to those who accepted him as the leader. And he led the party to expand the use of disinformation. In concise chapters, Scott explains how the race and class cleavages that were a part of this nation’s founding are now reflected in the current conflict between Republicans and Democrats.

The Republican lurch toward fascism has produced deep disarray in our political system. Scott examines how this chaos has affected voters and politicians. In addition to these divisions, Republicans now accept that lies, denigration of political opponents, and even violence are legitimate methods of winning. Drawing on insights from history, social psychology, and political science, Scott scrutinizes how Republicans support policies designed to redistribute income to an oligarchy that bankrolls the Republican Party. He explains why the anti-democratic trends and radical beliefs of the Republicans now fit the conspiracy theories of the fringe groups that call the Republican Party home. Scott points out what, if anything, Democrats can do to counter and diminish these anti-democratic divisions.

An excellent chronicle of how we have reached a state of American citizens supporting fascist beliefs and behavior. Dr. Scott’s take on how we deteriorated to this level add a touch of personal flavor and creates closeness to him on a subject that is so disturbing. His background in psychology provides insight into how any human being, like the previous president, thrives on lies and delusions.
