Mrs. Plansky's Revenge: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 655 ratings

Mrs. Plansky's Revenge is bestselling author Spencer Quinn's first novel in a new series since the meteoric launch of Chet and Bernie--introducing the irresistible and unforgettable Mrs. Plansky, in a story perfect for book clubs and commercial fiction readers.

Mrs. Loretta Plansky, a recent widow in her seventies, is settling into retirement in Florida while dealing with her 98-year-old father and fielding requests for money from her beloved children and grandchildren. Thankfully, her new hip hasn’t changed her killer tennis game one bit.

One night Mrs. Plansky is startled awake by a phone call from a voice claiming to be her grandson Will, who desperately needs ten thousand dollars to get out of a jam. Of course, Loretta obliges—after all, what are grandmothers for, even grandmothers who still haven’t gotten a simple “thank you” for a gift sent weeks ago. Not that she's counting.

By morning, Mrs. Plansky has lost everything. Law enforcement announces that Loretta's life savings have vanished, and that it’s hopeless to find the scammers behind the heist. First humiliated, then furious, Loretta Plansky refuses to be just another victim.

In a courageous bid for justice, Mrs. Plansky follows her only clue on a whirlwind adventure to a small village in Romania to get her money and her dignity back—and perhaps find a new lease on life, too.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I absolutely adored this book. Really fun but with a few teeth, as well. Mrs. Plansky is a terrific character. The story ticks along like a good watch." —Stephen King

"
Mrs. Plansky's Revenge is a triumph that pits an original, memorable, and deeply human protagonist against a plausible threat, then takes us on an unexpected, thrilling, and satisfying journey. Heartfelt, thoughtful, and always suspenseful."Michael Koryta, New York Times bestselling author of An Honest Man

"Mrs. Plansky is a wonderfully memorable heroine, full of wit and equally plausible as an ace tennis player and a motorcycle-driving detective with Romanian gangsters hot on her tail. Readers will be eager to see what Mrs. Plansky gets up to next."Publishers Weekly

"Quinn's briskly plotted nail-biter takes unexpected twists and turns that are nicely balanced by Mrs. Plansky's memories of her husband... Her age never becomes a detriment. Rather, she works it to her advantage, employing great ingenuity to solve a crime that elevates her into an immensely likable, wholly appealing heroine."
Shelf Awareness (starred review)

"Fans of Spencer Quinn's long-running Chet and Bernie series will not be disappointed with his new stand-alone novel, MRS. PLANSKY’S REVENGE... While the plot is delightful, the story and themes are significant and serious. There are many reasons that MRS. PLANSKY’S REVENGE is worthy of a long discussion by book clubs... [Mrs. Plansky's] kind heart, sense of justice, and grit and determination make MRS. PLANSKY’S REVENGE a novel that should not be missed." Bookreporter.com

"There's a lot of derring-do and old-fashioned hugger-mugger, which is what Abrahams does best. I... love Mrs. Plansky." Globe & Mail

Praise for Spencer Quinn:

“Terrific… Quinn radiates pure comedic genius.” –
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Nothing short of masterful.” —
Los Angeles Times

"If you like Sue Grafton and Janet Evanovich, hop on this train." –LA Times Magazine

"Delightful... Quinn, already beloved for his Chet and Bernie series about a man-and-dog crime-fighting duo, has created another lovable character who's sure to win over his already rabid fans." –
Star-Tribune

Fun crime caper starring a senior citizen
Mrs. Plansky’s Revenge is a contemporary cozy suspense novel about a seventy-one year old widow who is robbed of her life’s savings by a group of Romanian cyber criminals.Loretta Plansky is enjoying her retirement in her little condominium in Florida when she receives a call from her grandson asking for bail money. Half asleep and concerned for his safety she immediately sends her bank information but is shocked the next morning when all of her accounts have been cleaned out. When the FBI looks into her case she discovers that she’s the victim of an elaborate “grandparent scheme” originating out of Romania. With not a lot of hope of recovering her funds and only a few leads Mrs. Plansky jumps on a plane to hunt down the missing money. Upon arriving in Romania she meets with the U.S. embassy, a writer covering organized crime and unknowingly checks into the hotel owned by the perpetrator. Mrs. Plansky will use her tenacity, unending optimism and the ability to connect with people to find the criminals and get justice. This was a fun crime caper starring a heroine we don’t get to see very often (a retired senior citizen without a law enforcement background) and we also got the point of view of a young man stuck in a criminal organization with no idea how to get out. I appreciated Mrs. Plansky’s lack of bitterness and cynicism but sometimes her naïveté was frustrating. Even my 80+ year old mother knew how to handle the attempted “grandparent scheme” when they called her. She also was way too generous with her adult children and the pressure of living up to the monetary promises she made was a big motivator for risking her life going after a crime syndicate in another country. But overall I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to more Mrs. Plansky in future books.

Mrs. Loretta Plansky is seventy-one, retired, a widow, and a very good tennis player. She’s worth millions— until a telephone scammer cleans out all her accounts and investments. Her first thought is to economize. Her next thought is to go to Romania and get back the money. The FBI thinks the scammers are based in Romania.

Loretta is a heroine par excellence. She makes friends with some of the locals in the remote town of Alba Gemina. She shows a talent for snooping. She gets lucky now and then — and takes astute advantage of it. She knows how to drive a motorcycle — and a good thing too. She’s inventive, courageous— and not above a little fling.

This is a delightful book mainly because of Loretta’s personality — but also rich in fun characters, like Loretta’s feisty ninety-eight -year-old father. The bad guys are deeply bad, except for – you’ll see.

A real page turner. The author did a great job shedding light on how these bad actors work in organized crime style. I would label this a drama/comedy.

I couldn't wait to read Mrs. Plansky's Revenge when I saw it was written by my favorite author, Spencer Quinn. I absolutely love his Chet and Bernie series so I thought this would be good and I wasn't wrong. What I was though, was surprised. Although his humor was evident in his treatment of the delightful Loretta Plansky, and his genius for mystery and plot twists was evident, this book was far from anything he's written before. But for Loretta's pluck and humorous inner dialog, it wasn't recognizable as the same author who wrote Chet and Bernie. I'm not saying it wasn't as good, I'm not saying it was better, only that it was entirely different and yet just as rollicking a good time as any adventure Chet and Bernie had. I loved Loretta for her pluck. She was vulnerable and strong mixed together. Spencer Quinn brought Loretta to life in those pages, she was as real as I am. What an adventure, and I'm glad I went along for the ride. I couldn't put the book down and alas, finished it in only one day and I was sad to turn the last page. I hope we see more of Loretta Plansky, she's a truly unforgettable character. Don't miss this one. I strongly recommend it to anyone over the age of 60, and everyone who enjoys a good read.

Was really looking forward to
Reading this. Have loved all the Bernie and Chet mysteries and was looking forward to something new and different from Spencer Quinn. While I enjoyed the story I got a little irritated at times by just how incredulous the storyline was. I did found the main character, Loretta, to be somewhat thinly developed and the other characters over the top stereotypes. Was expecting more from Mr. Quinn

A widow myself, and of the same age, I found this tough going at times. But Mrs. Plansky wins out. I stuck with it and was glad. Like any of us in her situation, she has no freakin' idea what she's doing--she's making it up as she she goes, so there are cliffhangers. She's smart, tough, and resourceful though, and as the title implies, she gets hers. Enjoy!

I love the Chet & Bernie series so much that Spencer Quinn has to exceed on all levels for me to give any other book of his a 5 star review. Mrs Plansky starts slowly. Her life in Florida is unremarkable except that she plays a good game of tennis. The pivot comes when she is scammed by a telephone con artist. THIS is totally believable. The action picks up when she pursues the thief. This section of the book is exciting but unbelievable. Too many coincidences. Still I allow for artistic license. But the ending is just weird. The characters are there one minute and then they're not. So ... slow start, good middle, flat ending. Sorry, Spence, 3.5 stars.

I'm a big fan of Chet and Bernie so naturally I had to read about Mrs. Plansky's adventure. I recognized a bit of Chet here and there, which made me love the book even more. Lots of action and suspense, and humor, "so therefore" Chet would love Bernie to read it to him, if only Iggy would be quiet.

I'm a die hard Chet and Bernie fan, and for that reason will read anything the estimable Mr. Quinn happens to write. I had to swallow hard before tackling Mrs. Plansky, because ... well ... Chet and Bernie! BUT I was pleasantly surprised. I will confess I had my heart in my throat several different times during the telling of the story. Some reviewers commented that there were parts of it that weren't completely believable, and I concur, but it didn't bother me. I could hardly put it down once I got into it (and the beginning is a bit slow-- lots of getting to know Mrs. Plansky and that getting-to-know helps explain the fairly inexplicable action she takes later in the book to go recover her money. All in all a great tale, though.

SPOILER ALERT: One part I didn't like was the Romanian romance. Could've left that part out.

This book has an important point underlining it but it becomes a bit comical being so far fetched.
Very light, amusing story to leave you feeling karma can happen.
