At the age of seventeen, having been told by her English Literature teacher to sit on her hands in lessons, as she spoke more eloquently with them than actual words, Hilly decided to prove her wrong. It started with a bout of terrible poetry and has finally culminated in the publication of her first novel. She is also a painter and ceramicist, and has a lady-shed in the middle of an organic fruit farm on a mountainside in southern Spain. She lives with her musician partner and two rescue dogs.

Kept me at the edge of my seat all along. A tale of skin deep friendships, love lost, deep seethed trauma and revenge. Looking forward to reading more books by Hilly Barmby.

This story about a group of people who get together after they finish with school and live their lives. It has many points of view of the characters. Some I liked, some not so much. It really did start out rather slow which caused me trouble to 'get into the book'. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I enjoyed reading this thriller. This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites yet. This is a well written story about what happens at a reunion that is long overdue. Secrets and so much more is starting to come to the present. What will happen as this reunion gets closer? I enjoyed how the characters pulled me into the story from the start. This is a story that is full of action and just plain hard to put down. The twists and turns had me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen next. The chracters have great growth throughout the story which made it easy and entertaining to read. This is a really great story that the author made come to life. I highly recomment this book.

I received this book for free from Bloodhound Books.

This book was full of twists.

Although I predicted the ending, the writing was superb and kept me engaged despite this.

Let me just start by saying that I would have had given this book one more star if it wasn’t for the bad use of the Spanish language. If an author decides to use a different language than English in his/her writing, said author should really research the correct use of the words in the other language, or the editor of the book should check that every word written in the book is correct. That wasn’t the case on this book, the use of the expression “Querida” was written throughout the book as “carida” and there’s a sentence where the Spanish is written as “Fiesta de Los Tres Reyes Mages” when the correct word is “Magos”. I know that this oversights don’t take away the content of the book but for me is a sign of disrespect for the readers than speak more than one language.
As for the plot of the book, although it has a lot of twists and turns I was able to figure out very early what the ending was going to be and what the main character was going to do.
I also dislike most of the characters, but maybe that’s what the author was looking for when writing the book, especially the main character Ele which was not an enjoyable character to read.
I’m sad I cannot give more stars or a better review of this book because I have enjoyed previous books of this author.

This book got me hooked. Some of the Spanish was wrong, but the point got across. I did figure out the big twist fairly early on, but it played out rather well. There were a few slow parts and as far as I'm concerned I'd have liked it better if the the title was explained, it was a huge part of the storyline. I felt like I was left hanging a bit.

did not like it

This will probably be a best seller as it was absolutely painful for me to read. The entire book could've been condensed to about 6 chapters and have the exact same effect. I almost didn't finish more times than I care to admit but I felt I needed to see if it got better, the last 3-4 chapters were alright, I should've just skipped to the ending and saved my reading time. Enjoy!!

This was my first Hilly Barmby book that I read. It grabbed me from the very beginning. I couldn't put it down. I liked that it kept me guessing. This book will take you on a journey with the characters through an amazing ride. This is a page turning, get no sleep, eye opening, twisty read that will make you a Hilly Barmby fan. If you read only one book this year, read this one you won't be disappointed. Hilly Barmby is one of my new favorite authors, trust me you will get hooked on her books as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well-paced psychological thriller that doesn’t give you a moment of peace.

The Pact by Hilly Barmby is the story of a group of school friends who made a promise to meet up again someday. They lost touch and all went their separate ways, and got on with their lives - good and bad. When they get Michael's message about the get-together he had organised as part of the pact, they are reluctant to go, but in the end decide to do so.
This is a well-paced psychological thriller that doesn’t give you a moment of peace. When you’re not reading it, you’re thinking about it—trying to figure out what the different characters are up against, and just what exactly Michael is planning. The author expertly weaves a mystery inside a thriller and you even begin to doubt your theories.
I found the Ele/Maria relationship fascinating and disturbing. Hope was my favourite character and I was rooting for her. Paul isn’t easy to like, neither is Sabine but you can’t help getting caught up in their individual stories.
I thought ‘From My Cold Dead Hands’ was pretty impressive, but Hilly Barmby has knocked the socks off me with this one.

I'm not going to go into plot spoilers but from the first few pages alone I was chuckling away at the narrative and dialogue. So many passages in this story I find very relatable and entertaining. Wonderful stuff Hilly!

I don't wish to spoil this fascinating thriller for other readers. Therefore, I'll confine my comments to the following:
1. Captivating plot that grabs and never stops shaking up the reader.
2. Extremely well-developed characters.
3. Suspense layered to the highest mountains.
I recommend Hilly Barmby's, The Pact, to anyone with the courage to get on an out-of-control roller coaster going through Hell and High Water at lightning speed.
Well done, Hilly. Very well done. Marlene Cheng--author

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read

This slow burn phycological thriller tells the tale of a group of friends who make a pact to meet again when they are thirty. What could go wrong? What happened along the way to all of them? No spoilers from me but suffice it to say that the ending, and what leads to it, is quite shocking. The author is very descriptive, and I found this a little over the top at times especially when describing the characters feelings. That aside, a good read.
