About the author
At the age of seventeen, having been told by her English Literature teacher to sit on her hands in lessons, as she spoke more eloquently with them than actual words, Hilly decided to prove her wrong. It started with a bout of terrible poetry and has finally culminated in the publication of her first novel. She is also a painter and ceramicist, and has a lady-shed in the middle of an organic fruit farm on a mountainside in southern Spain. She lives with her musician partner and two rescue dogs.

This book was full of twists.
Although I predicted the ending, the writing was superb and kept me engaged despite this.
As for the plot of the book, although it has a lot of twists and turns I was able to figure out very early what the ending was going to be and what the main character was going to do.
I also dislike most of the characters, but maybe that’s what the author was looking for when writing the book, especially the main character Ele which was not an enjoyable character to read.
I’m sad I cannot give more stars or a better review of this book because I have enjoyed previous books of this author.

did not like it
This will probably be a best seller as it was absolutely painful for me to read. The entire book could've been condensed to about 6 chapters and have the exact same effect. I almost didn't finish more times than I care to admit but I felt I needed to see if it got better, the last 3-4 chapters were alright, I should've just skipped to the ending and saved my reading time. Enjoy!!

This is a well-paced psychological thriller that doesn’t give you a moment of peace. When you’re not reading it, you’re thinking about it—trying to figure out what the different characters are up against, and just what exactly Michael is planning. The author expertly weaves a mystery inside a thriller and you even begin to doubt your theories.
I found the Ele/Maria relationship fascinating and disturbing. Hope was my favourite character and I was rooting for her. Paul isn’t easy to like, neither is Sabine but you can’t help getting caught up in their individual stories.
I thought ‘From My Cold Dead Hands’ was pretty impressive, but Hilly Barmby has knocked the socks off me with this one.
1. Captivating plot that grabs and never stops shaking up the reader.
2. Extremely well-developed characters.
3. Suspense layered to the highest mountains.
I recommend Hilly Barmby's, The Pact, to anyone with the courage to get on an out-of-control roller coaster going through Hell and High Water at lightning speed.
Well done, Hilly. Very well done. Marlene Cheng--author
