The Rom Com Movie Club - Book One Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

Once a month, for as long as they’d been friends, Lisa, Mindy, Ruby, and Tina gathered for Rom Com Movie Club night. Facial masks, nail polish, and wine could settle the world around them as they dished on movies that made them want to love—even if the premise of happily ever after seemed far-fetched.

Having been tossed around from home to home growing up, Lisa didn’t have much of an idea of what happily ever after was supposed to look like. Her friends had become her stable home, and their love was enough to carry her though day to day. But life had always thrown obstacles at her, she never considered it might throw a man her way, which would cause a rift with her best friend before her best friend’s wedding.

When things went bad, it usually started a trend, and Ryan was caught in that loop when he decided to return home to live with his parents until some other opportunity came his way. He had no idea that opportunity was going to come right at him when he followed his brother into the girly chaos that was Rom Com Movie Club night, and he fell head over heels for Lisa, in a clay facial mask and wet toenails.

Falling in love with her best friend’s soon to be brother-in-law wasn’t ideal timing, but when had timing ever been on Lisa’s side? Now with a man who loves her and a best friend who assumes Lisa’s out to ruin her wedding, Lisa must decide which happily ever after she wants. The one with the man and the fairy tale ending, or the love of a friend who has been there for her whenever she needed her.

What's a romance trope without a forbidden romance?

What more could you need than unrealistic romance expectations from movies, and best friends to watch them with?

Once a month, for as long as they’d been friends, Lisa, Mindy, Ruby, and Tina gathered for Rom Com Movie Club night. Facial masks, nail polish, and wine could settle the world around them as they dished on movies that made them want to love—even if the premise of happily ever after seemed far-fetched.

The childhood friend now lives next door. Who wouldn't want to be tempted with that rom com trope?

Even though Mindy hasn't updated the house she inherited from her grandmother, her house is favorite to hold Rom Com Movie Club, where she and her best friends since college gather to swoon over cheesy, unrealistic rom coms.

Mindy assumed that after a relationship gone wrong, she'd never fall in love. But in the true spirit of a good rom com, the boy she had her first kiss with, now a handsome, successful man, knocks on her door. He has moved in next door, into the house his grandparents lived in.

Knowing full well that getting involved with the next-door neighbor is never a good idea, it's hard to ward off the perfect romance trope when friendship blooms between them, and sweet childhood memories fuel the fire.

But there's always a conflict in a good romance, and the secrets of their parents might threaten their perfect happily ever after.

When the brother of your best friend is a hunky doctor who becomes your roommate, how do you avoid falling into that famous romance trope? You don't.

There's always the funny, mouthy, less-than-perfect best friend in a rom com, but the sidekick is never the one to get the love interest. Since Ruby can't even keep a roommate, she's fairly sure that's the life she will continue to live, so she has always assumed her role with pride.

When Jason moves back to Colorado, moving in with someone he knows seems like a good idea. But it doesn't take long for him to fall for the voluptuous redhead in the next room. Unfortunately, the unspoken rule would be to not make a move on his sister's best friend. But what if it just happened?

True love can't be stopped, but unforeseen drama always threatens to tear apart relationships and friendships. Do the rom coms have it right? Does it all work out in the end? Or are those movies just full of unrealistic exceptions?

Ruby is sure she knows the answer to that, but what she hasn't banked on is Jason's determination to do what's right for her, whether he gets to love her forever, or not.

Lisa had never had a sleepover so her and her friends do what they call “the monthly romcom movie club” where they all get together and watch a romcom. Tina is getting married and is one of Lisa’s best friends, she is the first one to arrive for movie club. Tina is telling Lisa about wedding stuff and says that her brother in law is now moving in with everyone at Tina’s mother in law’s house. Tina shows a picture of her brother in law to Lisa, of course she’s swooning over him. While Lisa is swooning over a picture of this guy, Mindy and and Ruby show up for movie club.
Aaron is Tina’s fiancé, and Ryan is Aaron’s brother. They are hanging out in the garage at their parents house thinking of what to do for the bachelor party. Aaron doesn’t want to do any of the typical things. He suggests axe throwing, or golf cart racing, something fun. Aaron ends up showing a picture of the girls to Ryan, and He is stuck looking at Lisa. That’s when mom walks in with a box of cookies and tells the guys they need to deliver it over to movie club. While the ladies are in face masks watching the movie, all of a sudden the doorbell rings. But Lisa made home made pizzas, Ruby asks if Lisa hired a stripper and they all laugh. Lisa looks out the peep hole. It’s Ryan and Aaron with the box of cookies Tina forgot. Mindy and Tina run down the hall to the bathroom to wash off their face masks. Ruby doesn’t care, she opens the door for the guys while her and Lisa are still in their face masks. Aaron asks Lisa to show Ryan her apartment. She gives him the tour of her small apartment and tells him that she’s a YouTube blogger for her job. Lisa is a good blogger and got an award for it. Ryan asks Lisa to show him what she does for work. So he sets a date for Sunday for her to cook for him and she can blog it. After the guys crash movie night Aaron tells Ryan it’s time to go so the girls can enjoy their night. Lisa thinks nothing of the date, nothing has been long term for her, except her girlfriends. She worked at a coffee shop near campus when Mindy, Ruby, and Tina were attending school. They pulled her into their friend group and kept her around. They traveled places they had seen in their romcom movie nights to go try different places to eat. Romcom night was over, the ladies tidied up Lisa’s apartment before leaving. Lisa wakes up the next day with a wine hang over, and someone is knocking on her door, on a Sunday? Ryan he shows up with two coffees and a bag in his hands. Lisa invites him into her apartment. Ryan couldn’t wait a week to Lisa. They both chat for twenty minutes then Ryan leaves. Lisa was good at meeting people, she had been doing it all her life when she was bounced from one foster family to another.
Lisa picks up her phone to go through food options and decides to text Ryan to see if he is allergic to any foods, and they end up bantering back and forth and then Ryan calls. He asks Lisa to a baseball game on Tuesday! She says yes and tells him to be there at noon and she will have lunch ready before the game.
Aaron and Tina both get worked up about Ryan wanting to hang out with Lisa. Aaron doesn’t want Ryan to get Lisa’s hopes up as she’s never had anything stable in her life except her girlfriends. Lisa and Mindy are out shopping when she gets a call from Tina telling Lisa to cancel her plans with Ryan. Tina tells Lisa, this is Aaron’s time to shine. Lisa reminds Tina that she can hang out with Ryan, and this is Tina’s wedding time, she’s not going to steal her thunder. Lisa and Tina talk for a while, Tina apologizes for freaking out, she’s just stressed because her mother in law dotes on Ryan and it irritates her.
Ruby and Lisa meet up the day after the baseball game to walk around after a day of eating junk food. Ruby tells Lisa that Tina is starting to make up a story with all the pictures Lisa had posted the day before. Lisa and Ryan had kissed the night of the baseball game. Ruby tells Lisa that she deserves to be loved more than anyone, but also wants to make sure this time is all about Tina and Aaron, as it is their wedding time.
It’s Lisa’s birthday, Ryan finds out and sends her a text wishing her a happy birthday and asking her to dinner the next night to celebrate. None of the girls had texted, they usually act as if they forget, but they always have an elaborate plan to celebrate Lisa. All the girls show up and wear matching dresses and get all dolled up. A limo pulls up and they go to a drag show pageant. Ryan and Aaron go out that night since the girls are all together. Aaron reminds Ryan that the girlfriends are all super protective of Lisa because they are all she has. They have all been friends for about a decade at this point. Aaron just asks Ryan to not rush into anything so Tina doesn’t freak out about thunder being taken for their wedding. The girls enjoyed the drag show, they all get back in the limo and end up at a sports bar. Ryan’s car is there, all the girls look at Tina to see what she planned. Tina just wanted to see Aaron even though she would be going home to him in an hour. She admits to tracking his phone, this is what love has done to Tina.
The girls all go in the bar and everyone is staring at them as the enter. Tina goes straight to Aaron. He laughs as he knows Tina had tracked his phone but he doesn’t care they are both happy to see each other. Ruby sits next to Ryan, and asks the bar tender for shots for the party. Ruby passes out the round of shots and makes a cheers to Lisa. (Enter teary eye here because it made me tear up.) Aaron take Ryan’s bronco and Tina back to the house. Aaron and the girls ride in the limo back to Lisa’s house. They end up talking about all the family members flying in for the wedding. Mindy and Ruby can sense Lisa starting to have a panic attack. Ryan gets dropped off at home, Ruby rides back to Lisa’s house. Ruby helps take care of Lisa and get her to calm down and remind her that she is worthy of all the love she receives, and tells her she will keep Tina at bay if Lisa is into Ryan.
It’s the weekend and Ryan has to pick up his aunts from the airport, except the plane is delayed which means Ryan will be delayed going to see Lisa. Ryan calls Lisa to let her know that he is going to be late. Lisa asks if he is going to cancel. Ryan reminds her that he is really interested and he will be there, just late due to the delay, and getting everyone situated from the plane to his parents house. Ryan gets to Lisa’s house right before nine. They go to a microbrewery that has a taco truck across the street. They enjoy their night and banter back and forth. They get back to Lisa’s apartment, she invites Ryan in and he declines. They have a wedding rehearsal on Saturday. Lisa would be meeting Tina’s aunts for the first time. Lisa tells Ryan she’s freaked out about all the family she is going to meet, he reminds her that the girls will be there to get her through it.
The next day Ruby shows up an hour early to pick up Lisa because she thinks Lisa will back out if she wasn’t early. Ruby reminds Lisa that she can make it through the bridal shower even though it’s all family sharing family stories. But Lisa tells Ruby that she will be fine she has her girls and Ryan will be there. Lisa and Ryan have two more weeks to get through then they can be open after the wedding. They get to the bridal shower and meet up with Tina. They are worried that there won’t be enough food or drinks. Tina grabs lisa by the hand and gets them into talking with the family. Tina reminds Lisa that all this family is also Ryan’s. The girls get to mingling with the family. Ryan and Aaron are outside golfing with their dad. As time goes on someone outs lisa and Ryan for seeing each other. At the bridal shower! Of all places. Lisa starts freaking out and Mindy comes to Lisa’s rescue. They get the subject to change and Cesily(Tina’s sister) tells everyone it’s present time. As the shower goes on, Tina doesn’t talk to Lisa at all. Lisa is hurt over it and can see the hurt when she looks at Tina. Lisa goes home and shuts her phone off, she feels sick for hurting Tina. Her best friend.
Ryan goes out for a run early the next morning, when he comes home he sees Tina in the kitchen crying. He grabs a box of tissues for Tina and asks why she’s crying. She feels guilty for being selfish, she wants her wedding to be perfect. Everyone at the bridal shower was only talking about how Ryan came home and started dating her best friend. Tina asks Ryan to let the next few weeks be about her and Aaron getting married, not about Ryan and Lisa. Ryan tells Tina that if she doesn’t want them seeing each other until after the wedding, Tina has to go tell Lisa face to face. Ryan is supposed to go over Sunday for the YouTube video. Ryan tells Tina that she has to go over and tell Lisa why he isn’t coming. Ryan tells Tina, that this decision is from Tina not Ryan. He makes that very clear.
The next morning Ruby comes over but Lisa tells her to go away. Ruby uses her key and gets into the apartment. She starts opening windows and the patio door. Ruby asks Lisa what the hell she is doing. Ruby tells Lisa she needs to get up. She knows what’s going on. Ruby makes a pot of coffee, and tells Lisa that she needs to FaceTime mama rose.(Lisa’s foster mom, she was the only one who didn’t give up on Lisa.) she had already sent an email to her asking for a good time to video chat. Ruby gets Lisa up, and they have coffee and chat. Lisa tells Ruby she feels so guilty for all of this happening at Tina’s bridal shower. As they are talking, Tina shows up with two coffees. Ruby goes to the patio to tell Tina, someone needed to be here to get Lisa out of bed. Lisa tells Tina she can come in. Ruby sits on the couch and props her feet up on the table.
The girls get to talking about the bridal shower, and how all the aunts and cousins all thought Lisa was the girlfriend from Chicago that Ryan was dating. Ruby deflate Tina and tells her there wasn’t a chance that Lisa could correct any of the ladies. As Tina tries to say this is about the wedding Ruby cuts her off. Ruby says if Tina doesn’t stop none of them are going to show up because she’s being a bitch. Ruby tells Tina that Tina owes Lisa a huge apology for the way she acted. As Ruby is going off on Tina. Tina stammers out that Ryan isn’t coming, she told him not to show up, not until after the wedding. The girls are going at it, then they come together in a group hug. An hour later Mindy shows up and wants to get filled in on what’s happening. Tina tells the girls she’s just worried about Lisa and Ryan upstaging the wedding. Ruby and Mindy remind her that Lisa met the family, Ryan is home, Lisa and Ryan are dating. The marriage is still happening and this whole show is still about Tina and Aaron.
Ryan shows up later that night with beer and daises. Ryan apologizes for the way stuff went down. Lisa reminds him that it’s okay, she isn’t mad. The girls made up and it all worked out. Ryan thinks of all the questions he wants to ask. He asks Lisa about Mama rose, and the importance of her to Lisa. Lisa explains that her family was the final foster family she was with. Mama rose never gave up on Lisa, but there were so many red tapes trying to adopt Lisa. Lisa explains her life with Mama rose, the husband and her brothers. Ryan is so entranced in what Lisa is telling him. Even the family that wanted her had to leave, and they couldn’t adopt Lisa. And that is why she is so close with her girlfriends and why they are so protective of Lisa even if she is the oldest.
Ryan tells Lisa he’s not going anywhere ever, he is cemented into the group now. Lisa asks Ryan what stipulations Tina gave him. He said “just not to hurt you.” Then explains that Tina went off on Ryan, then Aaron, then the wedding, then started crying. Ryan and Lisa laugh about it, Lisa says she never wants to be that kind of bride. Lisa doesn’t even want to get married. Ryan has mentioned the word marriage a few times since they met a week ago, and everytime Lisa tenses up and he apologizes saying he won’t mention the word again. Lisa explains to Ryan because of what she’s gone through, she is going to tell him to go away, she is going to shove him away from her. Ryan tells her that he is still interested, good and bad and he isn’t leaving her.
Mama rose calls Lisa and she is so happy! Mama rose tells Lisa that Jason is moving back to Denver, to work at the hospital there. She tells Lisa he better set up regular dinners and holidays to be together when mama rose can’t be with him. Lisa tells Rose that she is seeing someone. And of course mama rose asks who it is, and she says it’s Tina’s future brother in law. Lisa introduces Rose and Ryan through FaceTime. She asks how Tina is handling the news and she will get over it in time. Mama rose asks if Lisa is happy. She says yes and tries to explain that they just met. Rose cuts her off and tells Lisa to just enjoy it.
As it’s gets closer to wedding time Cecily gets engaged and makes a huge ordeal on Facebook about it. Tina is loosing her marbles because this is her time to shine. The girls go for final dress fittings, and Cecily wants to try on a dress for her wedding and Tina looses it. All the girls pile into Mindy’s car and go to her house to decompress. Lisa sits with Tina as Tina cries. Tina says Cecily is jealous because Lisa is her maid of honor instead of Cecily. The girls wind down and watch a romcom, they all hug and everyone is calmed down.
It’s the bachelorette party, the girls made Tina wear the bride to be sash, and Lisa have Tina her tiara to wear. The girls get to a restaurant and Tina’s sister texts wondering where she’s supposed to be for the party. The girls had only counted for the four of them. The girls make sure tonight is all about Tina and what she wants. Tina tells the girls she is sorry for the way she has acted during all of the wedding stuff, especially to Lisa and asks if she will become her legal sister. The girls are enjoying their night, Tina got a fancy room at a hotel so they could all end the night safely.
Ryan and Aaron are at top golf for the bachelor party. Aaron teases Ryan saying he needs to find a sport. Aaron asks if Ryan is coming home tonight or staying at Lisa’s. Aaron tells Ryan that Tina got the girls a hotel room for the night. The guys leave top golf and go to a sports bar where the beer is free flowing. Aaron got up on the bar where everyone was throwing money at him. Back over at the girls, they get up to the hotel room. They all get plushy robes with their names on them, a stack of romcom movies, and desserts will be coming up.
Tina has a suprise for all the girls. She tells them, that she doesn’t tell Aaron everything first, nor does she share anything with her sister. Tina says the girls are always the first to know everything as she hands them little packages. Ruby opens her package and it’s a little rubber duck that says “aunt ruby” the girls all start crying. Tina is having a baby! She hasn’t even told Aaron, she wanted her girls to be the first to know. Tina makes Lisa promise not to tell Ryan. Not until after the wedding when Tina tells Aaron. Mindy and Ruby pass out, Tina and Lisa go to the living room and shut the bedroom door so they don’t disturb the girls. Tina wants to know everything going on with Lisa and Ryan now that everything has shifted.
Lisa gets back to her house later that day, Ryan shows up and makes them some coffee. Lisa asks Ryan to move in with her. Ryan asks if she is serious. He asks what walls he is going to run into, and how to bring them down. He wants to ask her and not have to ask her friends. Lisa goes to her room and brings out a box of the journals she has filled since she was 12, when she lived with mama rose. Lisa tells Ryan she wants him to know the raw her, and to ask her friends. They all know her.
Ryan goes to the bathroom and finds the shirt that says aunt Lisa. Ryan starts questioning Lisa when Aaron starts texting Ryan. Tina had told him that she’s pregnant and he is freaking out. Lisa starts to worry, is this how her birth father felt? Lisa tells Ryan to tell Aaron to think of this as a blessing, as it is one. She hands Ryan the spare key and tells him to come back.
Ryan meets up with Aaron at the bar. Aaron is stressed out, he accused Tina of doing this on purpose. Aaron says he lost his job on Friday, they live with his parents and all the wedding stuff has him overworked. Aaron asks what he does and how to talk to Tina about the baby news.
Tina shows up to Lisa’s, Mindy and Ruby show up next. All the girls are there to comfort Tina. A while later Ryan and Aaron show up. All the girls and Ryan tell Tina and Aaron they will give them time to talk about all this news. Tina tells them all to stay. Tina and Aaron talk, at the end he says he wants one of the duck shirts for himself which makes everyone laugh.
It’s finally the wedding day. Ryan’s parents want everyone over for brunch. Tina is nervous as ever. As the girls are getting ready Mindy tells Tina, when she gets back from her honeymoon all the girls need to come over for romcom night. They all nod in agreement.
All the guests are seated, Ryan escorted his aunts and grandmas to their seats. The ladies all lined up in order and so are the groomsmen. Everyone gets emotional as Tina and Aaron exchange “I do” and their vows.
As the evening is going on Ryan notices Courtney. The girl he was with in Chicago. She showed up wearing the ring he was going to propose to her with. Ryan urges Courtney to leave. He gets her to her rental car and goes to pull the ring off Courtney, when she kisses him. He doesn’t notice but Lisa is outside and witnesses her man kissing another woman.
Lisa ask Ruby to go back to Ruby’s house. She doesn’t want to be around Ryan. Ryan sees them leaving and goes after Ruby and asks to speak to Lisa. Ruby is not having it and tells him to leave.
Ruby and Mindy get Lisa back to Mindy’s house. Mindy hold Lisa as she’s crying, Ruby makes them all some tea. Lisa makes sure she shuts her phone off so Ryan can’t get a hold of her. Mindy tried to get Lisa to calm down and see the rational side of things. Lisa stayed the weekend at mindy’s house, and went home Monday when she knew Ryan wouldn’t be there.
When Lisa gets home she knows Ryan had been there, she could smell the faint scent of his cologne lingering through the apartment. Ryan has left a bouquet of daises and a letter for Lisa to read. All of a sudden there’s a knock at the door. It’s Jason, she lets him in. Jason asks Lisa what’s wrong and to spill the tea. They are family and that’s when Lisa begins crying. Jason tells Lisa he wants to meet the girls. After all they are her family, even though Jason is family too. Lisa doesn’t want to go over to watch Tina and Aaron open presents but Jason insists on them going. Jason is able to talk some sense into Lisa and tells her she should talk to Ryan. At least give him a chance to explain himself and what happened the night of the wedding.
Everyone goes over to Tina and Aaron’s to celebrate. Now the wedding is over Tina wants to know what has happened. Lisa says she doesn’t want to ruin the honeymoon and Tina says she will worry about Lisa the whole time. So Lisa explains everything that happens. Tina grows to be upset. No one knows why Courtney was there as she was not invited to the wedding. As everyone arrives, Tina and Aaron go out to the garage to talk to Ryan and why Courtney was there. The find out that the do not send invites had been sent out and that’s why Courtney was there. Lisa comes to the garage and talks to Ryan. Finally they had made up!

The Rom Com Movie Club, Book 1 by Bernadette Marie
Contemporary romance.
Lisa, Mindy, Tina and Ruby have been friends since college. They get together each month for a night of romantic comedy movies and facials. Having the women’s friendship is important to Lisa since her background lacks any family stability.
Ryan returns to his parents home after leaving his job to make decisions on his future. He decides to go with his brother, crashing the girls night fun, and ends up falling for Lisa with a face mask on, college tshirt and all. Now they need to figure out all the little details of a new relationship and what they want their future to look like.

Of course, we know there will be steam and conflicts as the two and their friends maneuver work, relationships, jealousy, weddings and past issues. Expect some drama and misunderstandings as in any rom com.
Several well known movies are listed and are included in a cute twist at the end.
I personally don’t care for yelling and arguing so the hero here wasn’t a favorite. He does pull it off in the end with the aforementioned twist.
I look forward to reading more about the other friends in the remaining two book in the series.

Prepare yourself to long for the days of slumber parties with friends and to even begin planning to bring them back as the author has done an excellent job capturing the fun, the drama and the comfort of being surrounded by friends sharing the things you love.

What to expect:

Fast to Love romance

Found Family

Pop culture references

Closed door romance

PTSD/Anxiety brought on by foster care

Pros:

It is beautiful to see an established “found family” working through beautiful happy moments and the scary hurtful ones. I appreciate that all the girls have distinct personalities and bring something unique to the group while also having overlapping qualities so it doesn’t feel too unrealistic. You learn just enough that you want to get to each of their stories to learn more.

I like that the guys in the story so far aren’t shown as perfect individuals sweeping in to save the day. They have difficulties, they sometimes mess up and they sometimes do really great without knowing they are. They give a great example of what a partner could realistically be.

Cons:

While I understand that the feelings shown by Lisa are very realistic I really feel someone needed to stop and tell her that love isn’t about what a person deserves, it isn’t something that you should be trying to earn it is a gift, freely given and that is why it is so rare and meant to be cherished. Everyone telling her she is worthy or deserving of love is both right and wrong. She can be worth everything and she can deserve it but that isn’t how love works. Love isn’t that logical and moreover, until she feels worthy of being loved she won’t be able to accept it and set aside her fears.

I feel that the story of Courtney was rather rushed. We hear of her and she is the reason Ryan is home but to bring her in for one minute to screw things up and not resolve the issues seemed like an excuse for a fight. I would have liked to have had her stick around so Lisa could confront her. Or for the club to have escorted her out in some way that embarrassed Courtney and no one else. I like that Ryan and Lisa eventually talked it out but I think it could have been healing and therapeutic for Lisa to have gotten to say something and maybe even to have stood up for Ryan who was technically assaulted.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable and Engaging Romance

The Rom Com Movie Club (The Rom Com Movie Club Book 1) by Bernadette Marie
5 of 5 Stars
An enjoyable and engaging contemporary romance which kept me happily turning the pages. Lisa, Mindy, Ruby, and Tina gather once a month for a ‘Rom Com Movie Club’ night, and I loved each of these likeable and relatable characters, and their friendship really came across in the narrative. Lisa didn’t have a stable home growing up and her friends have become her family, but she still didn’t really know what a happily ever after looked liked, only in the films they watched. Although Lisa is used to having obstacles thrown at her, she never imagined that by finding the man of her dreams, it would cause a rift with her best friend. Meanwhile Ryan had returned home to live with his parents whilst looking for his next opportunity. However, he never expected that following his brother, and joining in with his future sister in laws girly ‘Rom Com Movie Club’ night, that he would fall head over heels for Lisa. Although it’s not the best timing for falling in love with her best friend’s soon to be brother in law, just before the wedding, Lisa is surprised when her friend assumes that Lisa is out to ruin her wedding. Having fallen in love with a man who loves her back, Lisa must choose between her fairy tale ending, or her friend who has always been there whenever needed. This was a heartwarming and sweet romance, and I loved the chemistry between Lisa and Ryan. However, it was also a story about friendship, and I loved the banter and the dynamic between the four girls. I look forward to the other’s getting their own stories and hopefully HEA’s in the rest of the series!
