About the Author

Dale Carnegie was an American self-improvement lecturer and author. Born in 1888, Carnegie was the son of a farmer, and worked throughout his childhood helping his parents with various tasks on the farm. He was fortunate, however, in that he was able to obtain an education in his young adulthood at a nearby Teacher s College. Carnegie worked as a salesman and an actor before he took up teaching public speaking courses at a New York YMCA branch, where he was living at the time. Carnegie s public speaking career took off, and through his success he was able to have several of his books published. His first book, Public Speaking: a Practical Course for Business Men sold well, but his most impressive achievement was the publication of his book How to Win Friends and Influence People, which was an immediate bestseller when it was published in 1936, and has gone on to sell millions of copies in thirty-one languages. Carnegie also worked to open the Dale Carnegie Institute, a learning-ground for those interested in his public speaking and self-improvement techniques, and Dale Carnegie courses are still taught today. Carnegie died of Hodgkin s Disease on November 1, 1955.

Amazon Classics edition. Although first published in 1956, this book is still relevant and useful as a practical guide. If you read his 1936 bestseller “How to Win Friends and Influence People” you will be familiar with the Dale Carnegie. He was a self-made man (not related to the wealthy family that shares his name). Through thirty-one chapters and four appendixes, Carnegie and Esenwein provide a practical and progressive way to improve one’s public speaking. The Amazon Classics edition on Kindle has a bonus audio file.

I am a gifted and award winning public speaker and this book bored me to death. it is if he is being the school marm that has way too much ego involved. The endless history inclusions do more to bore than to educate. There is some good training in here but it is buried under tons of historical quotes. Not all my cup of tea and not recommended for someone who is truly trying to learn to be a public speaker.

Of course, the book is dated, but the principles are timeless. The ideas are very practical and coincide well with his book, "how to win friends and influence people." I'm using part of this book in a series I'm teaching to a group of young men about the art of preaching. It has been very helpful and explains well the tools needed to speak in any public forum, both small and large.

Ridiculous in this digital age that a technology college would require students to purchase a hard copy of this without providing it in the school store. They had short notice, and most online options had delayed shipping dates. This seller got it there fastest, but still after the professor's due date. We got the Kindle version also just so my student could read the assignment and be prepped for class. If all the other students hadn't encountered the same problem he'd have lost points for the lack of hard copy! That said, this book is a classic tool for public speaking and oral presentation courses, despite being snooze-worthy and dated. I'm hoping the course also includes more modern talking points and audience engagement tools.
