The Life of an Unknown Author: An Anthology on Writing and Publishing from Some of the Best Authors You Haven't Yet Read Paperback – October 8, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
As an aspiring author, sometimes you have to create what you want to be a part of, even when nobody knows your name.
This book is for the writers:
Who dream of being published.
Who are tired of hearing: Your platform isn’t big enough.
Who want a way to share their stories with the world that doesn’t involve TikTok dances.
These stories are for you because these are your stories.
When a group of unknown authors band together, magic happens. From all walks of life, and various stages of unknownness, this group of authors reflects on what it means to be unknown and what lessons are learned in anonymity. Triumphs and defeats, successes and rejections reveal the mettle and grit born out of struggle. Through penning their stories, and joining them together, their collective voice becomes a community of amplified authors. Consider this an introduction to your next favorite author.
Foreword by Joy Eggerichs Reed. Featuring stories by Cindy Arnold, JJ Barrows, Rose Booth, Jodi Cowles, Karen deBlieck, Maren Heiberg, Bethany McMillon, Rachael Mitchell, Tanya Motorin, Dani Nichols, Don Pape, Blakni Riley, Jace Schwartz, Leslee Stewart, and Samantha Stewart.

The Unknown Authors Club exists to amplify the quiet voice of some of the best authors you haven’t yet read. Founded in 2021 by Jodi Cowles, Rachael Mitchell, and Leslee Stewart—three friends and aspiring authors who were unwilling to take “you need a bigger platform” as a reason for not getting published. Together they created a safe harbor for unknown authors to be celebrated and published—regardless of their influencer status. Why? Because sometimes you have to create what you want to be a part of.

About the authors
JODI COWLES is an American author who spent eight years living (and mostly loving) life with her husband and daughter in Istanbul, Turkey. Spending more than half her adult life living and working in seven different countries, her time abroad expanded her vision of the world and allowed her to collect stories along the way. Armed with an endless supply of culture-clashing mishaps, inappropriate marriage proposals, and language barrier misfires, Jodi’s writing gets to the heart of the matter: the human connection present in every country and culture.
Leslee Stewart has always preferred knowing a little bit about a lot of things rather than mastering only one thing. Her mom calls this being a “Compendium of Useless Information,” but she likes to think of it as being a somewhat interesting person, or at least a good contender as the phone-a-friend on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.”
A natural-born storyteller, Leslee began her career as a newspaper reporter. After leaving journalism she spent the next two decades leading communications for some of the best-known brands in the world, including Victoria’s Secret. Most recently, she has served as a pastoral leader in the local church overseeing ministries for women and young mothers. No one is more surprised than she is to have moved from the “world’s sexiest brand” to working in ministry. The Lord clearly works in mysterious ways.
In 2021, along with two author friends, Leslee co-founded The Unknown Authors Club, a boutique publishing agency designed to publish and celebrate some of the best authors you haven’t yet read. Together they are making publishing dreams come true, one unknown author at a time.
Leslee loves to encourage others through speaking engagements and her writing. And when she’s not doing one of those things, she can be found seated in the bleachers next to her husband, cheering on their two, sports-obsessed teenage sons. Her goals in life are simple—learning to master the perfect guacamole, getting her boys to appreciate musicals, and someday singing backup for Aretha Franklin in heaven.
Dani Nichols is a writer, cowgirl, and mom of three from Central Oregon. She writes about motherhood, family, horses, and above all, the relentless nature of redemption. Her debut book for children, BUZZ THE NOT-SO-BRAVE, about her lovable and quirky quarter horse, released in summer 2022. BUZZ THE NOT-SO-BRAVE has won three book awards so far, and Dani loves doing author events and speaking to kids and grown-ups alike about horses, creativity and the intersection of courage and compassion.
Her work has won several writing contests and has been published in The Other Journal, Barren Magazine, Reckon Review, Fathom Magazine, Oregon Humanities and more. She is an award-winning member of Western Writers of America, Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and Women Writing the West. Rachael Mitchell, author and editor, wife, and mom, relies on faith, humor, and an up-to-date Google calendar to make it through. There’s a high chance you’ll catch Rachael dressed in sweatpants with a book in one hand, and a cup of tea in the other, totally forgetting that she’s supposed to be in the car picking up a kid from soccer practice. She majored in English, was a paid product copywriter for two large national retailers, and launched Mitchell Freelance in 2020. Her copywriting business provides well-known as well as mom-and-pop companies strong, but clear and concise, copy. Rachael resides in Issaquah, WA

- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2022Love the collection of stories in this book, from all different walks of life. It’s inspiring to read the words of people who are “unknown” but clearly talented. I was honored to get to take part in it and think anyone who wants to be an author has probably been a writer for a long time, just without the platform. Don’t let the platform dictate your place in the world, keep writing, get this book, be inspired, and definitely connect with the Unknown Authors Club!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2022Patience is a virtue and never more so is that true than for the lives of writers - unknown writers in particular. This anthology celebrates these skilled and talented writers that while practicing their craft, honing their skill, are not yet published until this edition. Hats off to Jodi, Leslee and Rachael for their vision …and audacity. Pick this up! You won’t be disappointed and come away likely encouraged.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2022If you aren’t an unknown author, you may think this isn’t for you. I read it because my friend is one of the authors. I am now looking forward to reading their published books!! Most all of them made their struggles so interesting, their books have gotta be great!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2022I liked this book. It was fun to read all the different approaches to the same subject. I am looking forward to reading more from each author.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2022I had the privilege of being given an advanced reader's copy to review and as an unknown writer myself, I felt like these authors put into words so much of what I've felt and experienced in my own life. To grapple with the calling to write while also feeling burdened by insecurities of inadequacy, wondering if anyone will care what I have to say - this is the unknown writer's dilemma. But through the words of this book, the beauty of that experience is unveiled amidst a wide range of perspectives and stories that look deep into the heart of what it means to be human, and what it means to create something of meaning in an oversaturated world of voices fighting for attention.
Writing one's experience is a vulnerable art. It takes courage to put yourself out there time and time again. To be rejected over and over, and to keep on persevering because you so strongly believe in the message you have to convey. These unknown authors are men and women of great strength, who have had every excuse to give up their craft, but have chose to believe in themselves and their story. They are fighting to have their voice be heard - not for themselves, but because they believe their words have the power to inspire and uplift others around them. They may not have a huge platform...YET...but I think maybe they have found something even greater, and that is the joy of connection, friendship, and community with which to share the words bubbling up inside of them. As one of the author's in this book put it, "most of us are and will continue to be unknown to most of the rest of the world, but even that’s okay. Because the words have to come out and in getting them down we find joy. Finding an audience on top of that is fabulous.
It’s the dream, but it’s not the joy."
The joy is in the process, and you will be reminded of that through the stories of these authors. Through their triumphs and failures, their past reflections and future filled dreams, you will find yourself in their words, and be inspired to keep fighting for a spot at the table wherever you find yourself on your writing journey. Whether a brand new writer, or a 20 year veteran, there is hard-fought wisdom in these pages to encourage and inspire your budding dreams as an author. Highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2022What a fantastic and surprising (in a very good way) glimpse into the world of the “almost published” writer. Every essay in the collection is unique in its own right, yet each one sprouts from a common foundation. These writers have taken the bold and courageous move to act on a calling and share their gift with the world. While every writer is aware that the process to become published is filled with hard work, uncertainty, disappointment, and requires a boatload of patience, they also bring us inside the middle space, where the book ideas have been solidified (and in most cases, fully written with the finishing touches), and the process of becoming known and creating a following has been initiated as they travel down the long road to becoming published.
Writing a book has been a passing thought of mine on multiple occasions. It is possible that I lack the discipline, courage, or work ethic (or maybe all of these things) to get an idea out of my head and onto paper. However, the persistence of the authors in this book of essays has inspired me to get down to business. Not because they make it seem like writing a book is easier than as it seems. Quite the contrary. It is because they have revealed the goodness that comes with each step of the process, including (and especially) the hard parts. We all have something to contribute, and the only thing stopping us is ourselves. As one of the writers, Jace Schwartz, points out, “There’s always room for more casserole at the potluck!”
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2022I received an ARC of this book and was delighted by the variety and honesty of these essays! Each author brought a unique voice to this anthology, yet I walked away feeling connected to each story. I found myself laughing a couple times and wanting to raise my fist in solidarity a time or too as well. Being an unknown author is daunting, and yet these wise writers are continuing forward regardless of rejection or "lack of platform." Their willingness to write, and write beautifully, brought a sense of hope to my heart.
They are doing what they love and are called to do, regardless of open doors or praise, and as they step out in both bravery and unity, I believe they are igniting fires in others who also know they are called to write but don't know where to start. This is the perfect book for any writer, or those who love a writer. It reminds us that we are not alone, and therefore known.
