Fiddler's Ferry Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 300 ratings

One woman’s near tragedy propels this compelling, touching, and powerful Welsh family saga from the bestselling author of Spinner’s Wharf.

The Llywelyn family’s livelihood largely depends on the ferry, run by Siona Llywelyn, the kindly yet rugged head of the family.

The family is large but close knit, held together by their mother Emily—a hard-working woman made old before her time having borne seven sons, and now with child once again.

As the boys grow into young men, tensions flare in the family unit, made worse by a web of rivalries and ambitions. When a death shocks the family to its core, it will take the intervention of a special person to remind them of what they have lost.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Rescued from a suicide attempt by the ferryman Siona Llewelyn, Nerys Beynon becomes an increasingly important part of the Llewelyn clan. The romantic and economic fortunes of Siona and his seven sons entwine the family in the life of Swansea following World War I. Nerys is a reference point for the entire family, particularly after the death of Siona's wife. Gower's knowledge of her locale and characters combines with a well-structured plot to hold reader interest, even of those who have not read her four previous Welsh romances. Those who have will be glad to return to Sweyn's Eye. Kathy Piehl, Mankato State Univ., Minn.

I read this book a few years ago, and I'd lost it. Then I found it on Amazon, and it was a joy to read again. Highly recommend this book. One of my favourites.

Once more Iris Gower has produced an outstanding narrative. I am constantly amazed that now in my late seventies I am reading and enjoying a genre I would not have considered 6 to 12 months ago. She portrays many of the characters as attractive an , there is an easy pace to each volume but it is myself I am astounded with, having been a lifelong reader of historical fact and fiction, biography S.F. comic and serious as well as other genres. I cannot say that I will read other writers in this genre but Iris Gower I most certainly will and it's not because I hail from Llangyfelach.
