The Lure Kindle Edition
A signal from space, a conspiracy on Earth.
An underground research station in Eastern Europe is suddenly bombarded with rhythmic bursts of subnuclear particles from beyond Earth—a pattern so complex it can only come from a highly evolved intelligence.
As the messages are decoded, the scientists are amazed by the information they reveal: secrets of a technology far in advance of our own, suggesting that a benign civilization wishes to share knowledge with humankind.
Surely, the scientists argue, the signal should be acknowledged? But the world’s superpowers have other ideas, and suddenly the scientists find themselves at the heart of a global conspiracy . . .
The Lure is an extraordinary and original thriller, perfect for fans of Scott Mariani, Dan Brown and Clive Cussler.
Praise for the writing of Bill Napier:

- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2018If you read Bill Napier's earlier book, NEMESIS, then you'll recognize the building blocks for THE LURE, a similar but not identical story. I liked this one better, as it was not quite so over the top. This book contained science, intrigue, lots of chase-type action, conspiracy threads, philosophical discussions, and a little romance thrown in. If you enjoy fast-moving thrillers and can suspend some disbelief, you could do much worse than THE LURE.
I have some key issues common to both books. A group of very quirky and very different scientists from various countries are quickly brought together in secret to analyze a huge space-based problem that's not their "specialty". In just a few days, some of these strangers and scientists become close friends or even lovers. Vast conspiracies abound in the highest reaches of multiple governments, pushing drastic actions including murder. Top leaders and scientists discuss some enormous issues involving our world and beyond, as if no one has ever considered these issues before! Worst of all, male & female scientists, newly coupled, evolve from bookwormy, lab-based eggheads into action heroes or escape artists in just days. These things make my eyes roll a bit, but they're not way out of bounds for techno-thrillers. I just think these books would benefit from being a little more simple and ordinary.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2004Like Dr. Napier's other novels, The Lure puts the man of science in the lead role of reluctant hero. No synopsis is needed as it is provided above, but leave it to say that it is in my opinion almost equal to Nemesis for entertainment value and it keeps the science facts and conjecture true to the mark! An excellent read!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2005THE LURE kicks off in the Tatra's, in an underground laboratory which detects signals that could only have come from an extra-terrestrial intelligence. How do we authenticate it? Do we respond to it? And most importantly, what consequences could this have for us? Indeed, several governments suddenly take a big interest in the matter, and they have somewhat different view about how to deal with this situation. The result: scientists on the run! Getting chased by none other than the CIA hit squads and other unsavory characters!
This novel takes us to some fascinating locations in Eastern Europe, and I enjoyed the trip. However, this book requires considerable suspension of reality, so fair enough: it is a novel after all. In fact, I found the idea very original, which was a refreshing change from most of the re-hashes I have read lately. Furthermore, the author is clearly a scientist. Indeed, he is a Professor of Astronomy! It is absolutely evident from his writing, and you do not encounter a string of scientific "blunders" as you do for example with Matthew Reilly's novels. Which is a good thing. However, on the down side, while his idea is excellent, the story leaves a bit to be desired. There are too many boring stereotypes. Somewhat forward Norwegian (read Scandinavian) women with long blond hair; Russians who never stop smoking and who could drink endless amounts of hard liquor. They tend to make the plot seem a little shallow and unoriginal. The key political figures, for example, the US president, seem to be simple and somewhat dim; although given the current incumbent, this is probably right on the mark. There is also perhaps an overdose of physics and astronomy, but these are well-worked into the story. While I still recommend THE LURE without hesitation, I certainly preferred NEMESIS, REVELATION and SPLINTERED ICON, and would direct prospective readers to those novels first.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sci-fi and the cold war in only one book
In a secret cave in a remote mountain range known as the Tatras in East Europe received a russian scientist Dr. Vashislav Shtyrkov dark matters. The dark matters hits the earths surface in a recurring pattern. It must be a ET-signal from a higher intelligence . . .
The cave facility is under the leadership of the british administration. The teamleader is Dr. Charlie Gibson. Gibson. Gibson recognized the possible impact of this dicovery on the science community and the hole mankind. He hired a team of scientists to find it out is this signal from a ET-intelligence or not? Dr. Thomas Petrie a british mathematican spezialiced in pattern recognition and Dr. Freya Størmer an astronomer from Norway figured out that this signal is send from an ET-intelligence and it containd the genetic code of a human liveform. It also contains information about human diseases like cancer e.g. and how we can handle such diseases. Dr. Gibson and the team dicided to go public with this information. At this time the hunt was opend because nobody from the responsible goverments was convinced that the information about the signal and the signallers should be published . . . So far the content of the story.
In my opinion is the idea of the story is better as the book. The begin of the story is as normal followed by a wave of excitement in the middle. After that the story continiues like a story about the cold war and ends without any suprise.

4.0 out of 5 stars A five star read but...
For the grammatical errors that interrupted my reading flow. I know it might seem churlish in an otherwise great read but it is my thing.
The storyline is compelling and it is a new twist on first contact. Hopefully a follow up will delve deeper into the speculative results gained from the extraterrestrial signal. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thriller novel
A good read, not too seriously written in parts which was a let down, one can imagine the movie industry making a film of the book and it being spoiled through lack of gravitas. All in all, a good read and the science is rather interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars They are out there!
A good read with a plot that kept you hooked and guessing. I enjoyed it, although the narrative seemed a bit haphazard at the beginning otherwise I would have given it five stars.
