If all the world's a stage, Jacci will play her part.

She only hopes her story does not turn out to be a tragedy.

In 1881, Jacci Reed is only five years old when a man attempts to kidnap her from the steamboat her mother, Irena, works on. Badly wounded during the confrontation, Irena takes Jacci aboard the
Kingston Floating Palace, a showboat tied up beside them. There, Jacci's actor grandfather tends to her mother and Jacci gets a first taste of the life she will come to lead.

Fifteen years later, Jacci is an actress aboard the
Kingston Floating Palace, and largely contented with her adopted family of actors, singers, and dancers. Especially Gabe, who has always supported her, and the gruff grandfather she has come to know and love. Jacci's mother has been gone for years, but the memory of the altercation that ultimately took her life--and the cryptic things Jacci has overheard about her past--is always there, lurking in the back of her mind.

When someone on the showboat tries to kill Jacci, it's clear her questions demand answers. But secrets have a way of staying in the shadows, and the answers she craves will not come easily. Gabe only hopes they come in time for him and Jacci to have a future together.

Another Gabhart book with a unique setting, appealing characters
I've loved Ann H. Gabhart's books for a long time. I love the way she selects remarkable people in unusual settings for her stories. "In the Shadow of the River" follows that story path again. Here, the setting covers a span of time from 1881 through 1896. Almost 6-year-old Jacci lives with her mother in a tiny cabin on a steamboat, where Irena works and cleans. But now, someone is after them both. Irena awakens her daughter in the middle of the night to flee to an adjoining showboat, where her father acts in its entertainment venue. But Irena and Jacci don't make it off their own ship without serious consequences. Why on earth would someone threaten a little girl?15 years later, Jacci is grown, still living on the showboat, and performing in the nightly entertainment with her grandfather and the rest of the troupe. She's loved and known well by all, and counts several adopted "aunts" among the crew and troupe. And then there's Gabe, whom she's known since she was 5. But someone still intends harm against Jacci...and their paths are on a collision course.Ann H. Gabhart's "In the Shadow of the River" takes readers on a trip I'd imagine they've never taken; on a showboat, down the rivers near Kentucky. It's a lovely river, and Jacci loves watching it and the landscape go by each day, as well as performing each night. But she's not really prepared for the danger ahead. Will she--and the rest of the troupe--survive it?Well-designed book, great characters, interesting setting. And the unexpected, too! Perfect for lovers of clean historical fiction with a little faith mixed in here and there.I received a copy of this book from Revell Reads. All opinions are my own.

Something different! A showboat, cast of memorable characters, murder, mayhem! What’s not to love? Very different from the author’s stories about mountain people, but every bit as enjoyable. Kudos!

In the Shadow of the River by Ann H. Gabhart

Topic or themes I saw: Prayer, playing your role.

Read it if you love:

✔️River stories
✔️Stories with shows and acting
✔️Family bonds that go beyond blood
✔️Stories in the 1800’s

Story: I was really intrigued by how Gabhart wove together the external plot of actors playing roles to the way the characters did it in their real life. I also loved the setting, I’ve never read any books set on a River show boat!

It seemed there was a decent amount of backstory upfront in this book. For me it may have held my attention better if it had somehow been scattered through the present action with Jacci and the reader finding out throughout the story instead of presented upfront.

Main takeaway: I absolutely loved this quote/thought and am still chewing on it. “Did you love her? Not enough. Never enough, but I do love you enough. How much is enough? Enough to do what is best.” I am always intrigued by the word enough. Enough isn’t perfection, it’s doing the best you can and doing what you see is best in each situation.

Thank you Revell for a gifted copy, all opinions are my own.

Come aboard for the adventure of a lifetime in a thrilling showboat story that will leave you breathless. Young Jacci is only five years old when she and her mother are attacked by a stranger in the shadows. Jacci is forced to protect her mother in a way that a young child should never have to. In desperation, Jacci and her mother escape to their family's arms on a showboat full of rising stars. Jacci's mother will have to fight for her life to survive, and Jacci will have to learn to adapt to her new life in the spotlight.

The author has done such an excellent job writing this exciting historical romance. The mysteries continue building until the final pages, and the ending does not disappoint. I also loved the inspiration woven throughout and the willingness of the characters to offer forgiveness where it is due. I would love for the story to pick up where it left off as I had become very invested in the characters and their lives. I appreciate the chance to read and review this book. These opinions are all my own.

I knew Ann would have a great story, and I wasn't disappointed! This story has it all! Mystery, great characters, and of course love!! It ended too soon...maybe an Epilogue so I could have attended Jacee's wedding!! Just my opinion. Keep writing Ann I'm already looking forward to the next book!!!
