When a body is discovered in East London, one woman’s murky past comes to light . . .

When remains are found floating in London’s Royal Albert Dock, successful public relations expert Kay Christie is sent to quiet the media—but things get complicated when it emerges that she knew the victim.

In the Wake questions whether we can ever truly leave our pasts behind and explores the lengths that we will go to protect the people that we love.

Read in one sitting. Loved it

I really enjoyed this book. The story hooked me in right away. There are a lot of twists and turns and complexities. Lots of layers and not a single flat character.

It’s dark and gritty, but not overly so. There are some disturbing parts, but nothing gratuitous or insensitive.

I knocked off a star because I felt the pace was a little too fast. It’s a thriller and meant to be fast, but with so many moving pieces, I would have enjoyed it more if it slowed down just a touch. Still, a fun read and I recommend it. It’s perfect for a vacation / long weekend read.

This book comes out November 18, 2022. The paperback is available November 18, 2022. This is a story with multiple murders, and twists and turns. The story beginnings with a body floating in London's Royal Albert Dock, successful public relations expert Kay Christie is sent to quiet the media. But things get complicated when it emerges that she knew the victim. You will meet other characters, like Detective Sergent Harvey, Simon Bell, Jacquie McCoy. Julia Rothman, Belinda Salas, and other characters too.

Sample: The dead body in the water, Kay recognized the face.

I can't say more, so not to ruin the plot for others. This story grips you as you keep reading each page getting more and more interesting, intriguing, and compelling, I enjoyed this novel. I hope you give it a try. You will be glad you did.

I enjoyed reading this suspenseful story. This is a new author for me which I enjoyed and look forward to seeing what is next for her. This is a well written story that has twists and turns that had me sitting on the edge of my seat. The characters made the story realistic and I found them connectable. This is a fast paced story that was hard to put down. There is great growth throughout the story with the characters and the plot This is an entertaining story and easy to read. I highly recommend this book.

I really loved this book. It is a very original thriller and it made me miss London so much. It's a feminist crime thriller so you get a strong female lead who has many flaws and she just leads you into this page turning world where you don't really know who to believe. A great holiday read. Five stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great plot with a fantastic final twist

I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend to others. The plot is multi layered and fast moving and keeps you gripped from start to finish. It has a great final twist, which brings together the different sub plots that are threaded through the novel. The characterisation is great. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the main characters are gay without it being a book about gay people per sae. All too often gay people are marginalised and stereotyped, so this was refreshing. Gay or straight though it is an excellent crime thriller, well written and very entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read

Very intense at times, I felt sorry for DS Harvey to be used by Kay. Not huge on the romance of Julia and Kay, to me it seemed as if she just settled for Julia instead of following her heart. I do recommend the book though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Writing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 16, 2018
I loved Helen’s writing. There’s a rhythm and poetry to it that I really enjoyed. Her description is remarkable. Sometimes you can read descriptive passages that are so long that you’ve forgotten what the story was about. This is different. It’s a line of metaphor or simile, or just pure expression, that instantly colours the scene, visually or emotionally: ‘their chairs had grown closer together, the way shoes move under the bed in the night’.

The story, at first, is enjoyably chaotic. A prelude, and then interspersed chapters that take us back in time, but it’s the jumble of thoughts of the protagonist, Kay, that can sometimes leave the reader playing catch-up. We have a murder in the workplace and Kay thinks she recognises the body – as she tries to unravel the mystery of the death, her own life begins to unravel around her.

It took me a good part of the book to tune into this style. The pace of the narrative varies, from slow, delicately remembered childhood moments, to the brutal, savage imagery of assault, via the occasional steam of sex and lust. The latter entirely justified within the emotional motivation of the characters. A good read that brings together murder, mystery, suspense, emotion and intrigue against a backdrop of wonderful writing. Definitely a five start review for a debut novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book

I loved this book. Its very original in the thriller genre. So great to see gay characters at the centre of the plot. The characters are really detailed and I feel like I know them so well – and even though they do outrageous things I can’t help but like them. I love the whole subplot of things falling apart and that sense of life getting out of control.

It is a very different kind of thriller and I think it will appeal to people who like strong female characters. I’d call it a feminist thriller. Brilliant. Can’t wait to see it on the TV.

I read this book intensely over a couple of days on holiday, it was hard to put down. I don't read that many thrillers but was recommended this and it did not disappoint, edge of your seat stuff, a true thriller with interesting layers and a sensational twist!
I loved getting to know the characters and couldn't help but be lured in and feel that I was right there every step of the way. Would love to see this adapted for the screen...I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what Trevorrow writes next!
