A Dictionary of Foreign Words and Phrases Kindle Edition

3.0 3.0 out of 5 stars 1 rating

A fascinating A-to-Z reference to foreign words and phrases that have become part of contemporary English usage.

The English language has been greatly enriched by a vast array of words and phrases imported from other tongues, such as comrade, chateau, wunderkind, and vox populi. For the average English speaker, many are bound to be familiar. Some may even appear to be standard English, while others may seem, well, foreign. A Dictionary of Foreign Words and Phrases presents a comprehensive list of such terms, with entries that reveal their meanings and etymologies.

A Book Whose Time Has Come, And Gone

A Book Whose Time Has Come, And Gone
Back in ye olden days, before the Internet became the world's biggest reference desk, it could be difficult to find the meaning of a foreign word you came across while reading. Some common (primarily Latin) words, like "finis" you could find in basic dictionaries, but not words like "Kinder" or "kolkhoz". Some phrases you could find in the Oxford English Dictionary, like "deus ex machina", but not "Deo Optimo Maximo". That's where books like this were invaluable, and I used to pull out my copy regularly. Now, sadly, it gathers dust, because I can simply type any phrase into Google and find its meaning. If you have a retreat in the woods with no internet access, you will find one of these phrase books handy, and really should pick one up. Otherwise, it's only useful as an odd relic on your reference shelf.
