The Lies We Believe: A gripping psychological thriller (Shadow Stalkers Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 317 ratings

“Tell me what happened yesterday?”

I shift on the padded chair in my psychiatrist’s office, staring at the abstract watercolor on the wall as an attempt to avoid her question. “I saw Lucas.”

“And. . .” Dr. Gabrieli prodded.

I don't answer.

“Riley?

I finally look back at the doctor. “It wasn’t Lucas. Just. . .just someone who looked like him.”

“Exactly. You see, our minds are incredible machines but simply put, they don’t work like computers. Instead, they can unconsciously bend our perception of what is real and fill in the gaps, making it possible to perceive things that aren’t really there.” Dr. Gabrieli taps her pen against her notebook. “Think about an amputee who still feels his missing leg, or how it’s possible to see patterns in chaos. Memories are sprinkled with gaps, then we fill in those gaps with our own created recollections.”

False information.

Distorted memories.

Lies.

But what if my mind can’t decipher what are truths and what are lies? And what if the truth is even more dangerous than the lies my mind believes?
***
Riley Bishop is a single mother, working at home as a graphic designer to provide for her two children, Sadie and Oliver. But something is very wrong. Riley starts forgetting things—like appointments, where she put her keys, and where she parked her car. And then she thinks she sees her deceased ex-husband while out shopping. But as Riley begins to question her own sanity, her twelve-year-old Sadie goes missing. Soon Riley finds it harder and harder to know what is truth and what are lies as she is forced to question her own reality while she searches for her daughter.

Apprehending fugitives as a part of the SOG team gives Tucker Shaw the purpose and drive he needs to fight the demons from his past. When he’s called out on a mission to track down a group of endangered young girls, he has no idea how drastically his life is about to change. It’s a frantic hunt as the situation quickly spirals out of control with a final twist that has Tucker questioning everything he knows to be true.

Excellent tale with lots of suspense and mystery!

Excellent tale with lots of suspense and mystery!
Tucker Shaw is a Federal U.S. Marshal who specializes in human trafficking/kidnapping cases. He is called to the home of a woman whose daughter has been abducted. The woman is understandably overwrought but some of his colleagues begin to wonder if she is “all” there. Strange things have been happening that cause some to question if Riley Bishop is in her right mind. Tucker evaluates the evidence to make up his mind where she is concerned. He also tries his best to keep his heart under control as the case advances, and he begins to have feelings for Riley.Riley Bishop is a single mom with two children. She works from home as a graphic artist. Her life has been tough the last year. She discovered that her husband was operating a false investment scheme, bilking his clients of millions of dollars. She decided to turn him in to the FBI and divorce him. He was shortly thereafter killed in a car bomb. Now, she is on her own, trying to raise a teenage daughter and elementary-age son. She has fear and regret over her past actions while also dealing with the ever-present fear of losing her mind like her mother. When things happen that she can’t remember doing or saying, her worst fears are confirmed. She is going crazy like her mom, or is she?I liked this suspense story because it focused more on the suspense/mystery aspect and less on the romance, unlike a lot of recent romantic suspense novels. There is plenty to keep readers tuned in and turning pages of this psychological thriller, including murder, kidnapping, mental illness, and more. It was very interesting how the main character reacted to things or situations created by the villain that made her question her sanity. Tucker has his own story and past that I’m looking forward to unraveling in the next book in the series.

The story of single mom Riley Bishop and her foray into trying to find truth among all of the lies is a unique psychological thriller that held me enthralled and guessing all the way to the end. I really enjoyed getting to know the dynamic characters and all about their flaws as well as their strengths. Riley and Tucker, the FBI agent, were my favorites because both had issues to work out and both had worthy goals for the future. I loved the twists and surprises in this novel, especially those regarding Riley. And I especially adored her tenacity in taking care of her children above all else. This is a great book and the promise of more books in this series has me very excited. I enjoyed the complicated plot and the web of deceit woven into the story so that solving the mystery of whodunit was intriguing. This book is what a psych thriller should be: compelling, riveting and completely absorbing from beginning to end.

Author Lisa Harris introduces her new Shadow Stalkers Series with the release of The Lies We Believe, a superb psychological thriller. Harris provides readers with a cat-and-mouse suspense-filled novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Family drama, mental illness, child trafficking, child abduction, financial crimes, and murder are only part of the issues Harris has included in her plot. She also incorporates a potential love story if her two main characters can determine truth from lies. This novel is an excellent read as Harris peels back all the layers of the characters and allows you to see the true motivations of each one. This new series is going to be dynamic!

As a single mother of two kids and the daughter of a mentally ill mother, she wonders if she’s going crazy as well. Things happen that she has no memory of and others don’t believe her. Can’t wait for the next book!

This was a fast paced book with a lot of suspense, dark secrets, and crime. It took the entire book to find out who all was guilty and who was innocent. The romance added to the book made the storyline even better. I can’t wait for the second book of this series to be available.

The story line was decent but did anyone actually proof read this? There was so much grammatically in error that it really slowed things down for me. I usually really enjoy Lisa's books, but not so much this time.

Read via Kindle.

I had this on pre-order and couldn’t wait until it was out. It was an excellent book. And that cover!! I have read some of her work before but I definitely need to read more of it.

I love that most of the book kept me guessing and thinking about possibilities. “Psychological thriller” is definitely a good way of describing this book. I loved the main character and her “Mama Bear” attitude despite all that she went through. I also really liked Tucker and I am anticipating learning the mystery of his back story as the series progresses.

I like that this book highlights technology and how it can be used for good and bad. There is danger in the latter and today’s world is ripe with it, even if some aren’t seeing it.

I appreciated and respected that the main character grew to a reliance on God and how He had always been there with her through it all and gave her the strength to deal with the changes, both good and bad.

My only minor things to say were that I figured out the book’s bad guy (not a deal breaker at all) and I felt the potential relationship didn’t have much development for me to fully accept the connection, even if I am happy about it. Sometimes life hands us something we aren’t expecting. (I’m living proof of that with a wonderful husband 27+ years later.)

I cannot wait for the subsequent books. I looooove a delicious cliffhanger!!!

Riley Bishop is haunted by her late mother's mental illness and the uncertainty of life without her husband, Lucas, who recently died in a car explosion. Riley's scared she's beginning to show some of her mom's symptoms and Lucas had been involved in fraud stealing investors millions which were still missing after his death.

And then her teen daughter, Sadie, suddenly disappears. Riley's world just imploded.

Written in Harris' trademark fast pace, it's very easy to start turning the pages.

Tucker Shaw, a US Marshall investigating a child trafficking syndicate, is called in as Sadie may have been taken by the traffickers. Tucker's perspective is told in 3rd person while Riley's are in 1st person. This works well.

It's a thoroughly enjoyable thriller with lots of questions, a few surprises which all keep the pages turning. The ending happened all a bit too quickly and easily but leaves us with unanswered questions for the next book in the series.
