From “the original master of horror,” a 1927 short story about an artist banished for his ghoulish paintings and the supernatural secret behind his art (Publishers Weekly).

In this classic short story from H. P. Lovecraft, enter the gothic world of Pickman, a painter notoriously banned from the Boston Art Club for his grotesque images. But once inside the artist’s studio in the slums of the North End, the mystery behind Pickman’s artistic choices is shockingly revealed.

I liked this short story. I had read Lovecraft many years ago and have forgotten everything so I'm dipping back in. This short story is my first foray back. I don't recall ever reading it before. It's nice and atmospheric, which I love. But the title rather gives away the ending, I think. Still, it was a pleasant read and the idea of it is very creepy. It never addresses what happens to Pickman. I assume he's just fine dealing with all the horror he paints! I'm looking forward to more Lovecraft.

The Master and Grandfather of Horror does it again! One of my favorites next to Mountains of Madness, Call of Cthulhu, Colour out of Space... Simply: Read it!

The story was well versed, and articulate, but the conclusion was short. The punchline or the discovery wasn't until the very end and it was only a sentence.

A very powerful little story. Evokes a sense of time and place better than most. While the ending was not entirely a surprise, it was effective!

If this is your first Lovecraft story, you will love it! If you are an old hat at this, it's more of the creepy Goodness that only they Mythos can deliver. This is one of my favorite HPL short stories of all time! Enj[y!

The price is phenomenal so I'll give it 5, but for all the works of this legend i find this one to be less profound, however i like how Lovecraft manages to make this story sound so real. I think this is where the physiology of fear lies and looks like so did he..

I was moved to read this having watched a live online reading of the story by Robert Lloyd Parry. Though perhaps a little dated for the modern taste, it takes you expertly down its dark road to its final reveal. An enjoyable descent.

Even when you can see the end of this short story in sight the horror is portrayed truly in an unforgettable way.
