Jagged Emerald City: Obsidian Divide Book One Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 19 ratings

Meet Fairian Leynthall. She’s irreverent, the unwilling heiress of her family’s business empire, and obsessed with learning magic. She’s also got two big problems.

One, there’s evidence the magical being who killed her sister is in town.

Two, there’s this supernatural jerk interfering with her field research. He keeps spouting nonsense about danger, treating her like she matters, and distracting her with big lonely eyes. Not to mention it’s aggravating how much being around him makes her feel like her true self.

Then it turns out that her supernatural jerk, Daimyn, is some kind of lynchpin in the magical community, and people are desperate to control the power he holds. As Fairian struggles to unravel the truth about her sister’s death, a ridiculous rumor of Daimyn’s affection for her spreads, and she becomes a target. Fairian convinces Daimyn to work together to fix it, but she won’t let herself get close to him. Because the last magical being she trusted? Killed her sister.

History threatens to repeat itself as Fairian falls further into the tangled web of supernatural politics. Becoming a pawn would be the easy path. The hard path will mean believing in herself, being vulnerable enough to trust, and take back power to be her own piece on the board.

Jagged Emerald City is the first in the OBSIDIAN DIVDE series, set in an eco-city and following the adventures of Fairian Leynthall as she discovers and finds her place in the magical underworld.

A search for the truth in a magic-filled world of uncertainty
Jagged Emerald City is a tale of suspense, cinematic-worthy drama, and suspenseful adventure. Follow the main protagonist Fairian as she endeavors to find her place of belonging in the mythical world of Farfalla. She encounters magical creatures intertwined with a totalitarian regime while searching for an unsettling truth shrouded in mystery and uncertainty. It is with great anticipation that I look forward to the continued adventures of our fearless heroine in the stories to come!

There is so much going for this book. Not only do you have Fairian, a bucket of sass and snark, who is actually endearing and likable, but you have a beautiful world to explore. Kelpies.... I absolutely love the way Fairian moves through her world with so much love for it.

I purposely put off reading this, knowing full well I'd devour it in less than 24 hours. R. K's writing is beautiful, with no extra fluff. Everything feels intentional. It's not pretentious, somehow dealing with the idea of a world post climate collapse with hope (seriously... how?), but it's depiction of strained familial relationships, PTSD, and other heavier topics is honest, while not weighing on your heart. I also have no idea the last time I read every word of action scenes. Seriously, I will skip chapters with no regard for missing internal dialogs, I have so little patience. Yet I hung on every word. And!!! It's the only book I rolled my eyes at drama between two romance characters, AND IT WORKED. Seriously, both of their motives made so much sense, you couldn't even strangle them. You just wanted to hug them, or quietly wait for that delicious slow burn.

All this from a debut author. *chef's kiss*

Now commence eagerly and selfishly waiting for the second book, and screaming to the world to read this book. You won't regret it. Not even staying up till 1am knowing you have to wake up early.

This is not my usual genre but I decided to try something new. I was pleasantly surprised that I found it difficult to put down. My intention was to read this on a plane, but after I began it never made it to the plane. An interesting story of a strong heroine who is also plagued with the same self doubts and second guessing we all possess, yet she is able to overcome these and forge ahead. Looking forward to Book 2.

A fiery young woman trying to find a place in the world that fits her and refusing to be limited by the expectations of those trying to control her life. Jagged Emerald City was thoroughly enjoyable and I felt like I was on this journey of discovery with Fairian exploring this fascinating world and how it is similar and different than our own. I’ve always enjoyed reading stories about magical beings and will be looking forward to exploring this world more in future books.

Fairian discovers that there is magic in the world; she has Feelings that she doesn’t understand, and suspects they are linked to magic. Speaking of magic is taboo, and writings about magic are sequestered and extremely rare. Still, she seeks to uncover the truth of what happened to her and her sister, seeking answers over her own safety. Fairian is headstrong, continually stumbling into her ignorance of the world, her desires to escape the constrictive wealth she stands to inherit, and a mysterious Protector. But she doesn’t need protection, unless the magical world is larger and more dangerous than she knows… which, admittedly is very little.

Fairian has an engaging, often hilarious perspective on the world which alone is reason to buy this book. I found myself laughing at her inner dialog more times than I could count.

R.K. Brainerd’s debut novel is filled with wit, humor and page-turning suspense. Everything R.K Brainerd writes will go on my bookshelf, and Jagged Emerald City deserves a spot next to the greats.

I loved this book! I couldn't put it down for one thing! Definitely a page turner! And I love the main character, Fairian, and how real she is in this magical world of mayhem! She is funny, honest, dealing with a lot of trauma, and still finding herself intrigued by the adventure and Daimyn, who is mysterious and kind and helping her understand this new world she is in! Lots of fun and deadly magical creatures, a whole world to explore, and relationships, self-discovery, and much more! I can't wait for the rest of the books in the series! You gotta check this out!!

The author’s writing style is lovely, and her world building is thorough and consistent. Farian grew on me quickly as an underdog sort of heroine. She has an unending enthusiasm for her quest that is infectious. I loved the gradually increasing interactions and attraction between her and Daimyn. The ‘young human girl vs. magic people’ and ‘impossibly strong, over-protective love interest’ tropes are hit pretty hard in this one, and I’m here for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great first person fantasy from a neurodiverse point of view
Reviewed in Canada on April 5, 2024
I enjoyed this book. It is the first-person story of a neurodiverse young woman who seeks to understand the magic that cohabitates the world she lives in.

Fairian Leynthall is the only surviving daughter of wealthy merchants newly arrived in the City of Farfalla. Her autism leads her to reject the busy social scene her mother craves in favor of hard physical training, and nightly escapes into the dark corners of the city.

When her hunt proves unexpectedly successful, she is rescued by the hulking, broody Daimyn who seems to have a fascination for her even as he continually pushes her away.

The story is propelled by three central mysteries: What is the source and nature of the magic Fairian perceives around her? Who or what is the mysterious Daimyn? And what happened to her older sister?

Given her status and refusal to bow to family pressures, her best friend, Tiff, a servant she has been encouraged to develop close ties with, is used by her mother as a whipping boy, or rather whipping girl in this case. If Fairian doesn’t comply, Tiff will lose her privileges.

The pacing of this story drives the reader forward through the book. I finished it in a weekend, unable to put it down. When I reached the end, I immediately registered for the preview chapters of the next book.

As an autistic aging adult remembering my own late teens and early twenties, I found Fairian’s reactions and behaviours familiar and entirely believable. The reactions of the adults around her also rang true. Her search for independence and to find her own place in the world where it seems she doesn’t fit will doubtless strike an echo with many other neurodiverse young adults.

This is a book that all readers will be able to enjoy. The fantasy elements are relevant, and the world makes sense. But it is the characters who create the fascination of the story.

This book knocked me sideways, then comforted me, then knocked me flat again. The author has created such a rich and layered world full of magic and monsters and horror, but also hope for a future beyond our own messed up world right now.

Fairian and Daimyn are incredible characters, their slow-burn attraction is ADDICTIVE! The story deals with really heavy themes of trauma and mental health, but portrays them with compassion as well as visceral honesty. This book has so much heart, and I cannot wait to dive into the sequel!
