Firefox (The Mitchell Gant Series) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 531 ratings

The New York Times–bestselling Cold War thriller: It’s the most advanced stealth fighter ever developed, and his job is to steal it from the Soviets . . .

The Soviets have created a new plane equipped with a weapons system that can be activated via sensors in the pilot’s helmet—an advance that could shift the global balance of power. But British intelligence has a plan. There are two prototypes within the heavily secured Soviet base, and with some help from the CIA, they’re going to steal one.

The man chosen for the job is US pilot and troubled Vietnam veteran Mitchell Gant. First, he has to get into Russia. Then the airbase. Then the hangar. Then onto the plane and into the air. All while the KGB scrambles to stop him at any cost . . .

Not your Clint Eastwood story...

Not your Clint Eastwood story...
For those of us from the cold war era, it is a classic tale of absolute espionage. It's a story that captures the original cold war cat and mouse chase between the West and the East. One side full of "enemies around every corner" and the other using their advisories short falls against them. Though some parts could be written better but if you are looking to read this and follow along with the movie, you will be disappointed. Yes, the movie is good and uses a good portion of the book in it, let your imagination take you on a high speed flight of a lifetime!

This is truly a masterful work of action & suspense! Craig Thomas puts the reader in Michael Gants shoes as he infiltrates Moscow & steals the Soviets coveted Mig 31(There is a REAL Mig 31, it's called the Foxhound.) The movie is equally entertaining. Craig Thomas is up there with aviation great Stephen Coonts. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this to any aviation fan & those who like action-adventure novels. The rivalery between the U.S. & the Soviet Union continue to this day. None was this more "heated" than in the Cold War. Little known fact: The REAL Firefox was Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin's daughter who came to the U.S. appalled by her father's regime.

This is the second novel by Craig Thomas, and the one that he's gotten the most fame from. Thomas gives this book a bigger scale than his first novel, Rat Trap, and his novels would get more epic as they went along.

Set during the cold war, the story invloves a newly-made Russian jet, the MiG-31, codename: Firefox. It has stealth technology, can go speeds up to Mach 5, and has a thought-controlled weapons system. The West knows what a threat this can be, so what do they do? Smuggle the best pilot they can find into the Soviet Union so he can steal it. USAF pilot Mitchell Gant is chosen, dispite his shell-shock from his time as a POW in Vietnam. With the help of Jewish dissidents, Gant must make his way through Russia and hijack the super-plane right under the noses of the Soviets. Throughout the journey Thomas takes us through Gant's unstable psyche.

A great novel from Craig Thomas, but I got a little bit bored with some of the flying scenes. I'm more of a cloak and dagger fan than of high tech stuff, but that's not to say that those parts of the book aren't written well; they are, and Thomas does a great job at not hitting you over the head with his research. And even with the techno stuff he can really put you into the heads of his characters which makes for high tension reading.

Firefox was the only Craig Thomas novel to be adapted into a movie. Clint Eastwood's version, released in 1982, made for a faithful adaptation of the book. Though the special effects of the time are horribly dated by today's standards, Eastwood brought all the suspense of the first half of the book to the screen masterfully. And if it weren't for the film, I wouldn't of ever heard of Craig Thomas and be able to enjoy all of his books.

Craig Thomas also cast Mitchell Gant in three more novels: Firefox Down, Winter Hawk, and A Different War.

I have fallen in love with Craig Thomas. He brings his stories to life in such a way, that I actually have to put them down a nd come up for air. His cahracters are real and ,although these are written back in the eighties, still feel very relevant in today's world. If you like action, spy thrillers and great writing, you will love his novels. I am working my way through all of them and will be very sad when I have finished.

One of my favorite books and movies! I've read it a couple of times, but it gets better every time. Same with the movie. This is one movie that actually is true to the book, even in the small details.

I like the idea behind the story, but I am not impressed with the writing style. This book reads like what it is which is a book about a movie.

Been many years since I read this thriller, and for some reason, I wanted to revisit it. Still an amazing story.

5.0 out of 5 stars An adrenaline-filled, action-packed thriller in two halves
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 2, 2023
The first half is pure espionage, the second half is military action dominated by the eponymous 'Firefox'.

I was initially considering giving 'Firefox' 4 stars rather than 5, but I decided it was deserving of the full 5 because as pure entertainment, it is quite spectacular. It is brilliantly paced and suspenseful, and well-written too.

My only criticisms are the somewhat lazy stereotyping and the under-development of characters, although given its genre, fictional nature and the era in which it was written, some of these are perhaps forgivable.

Definitely worth a read if you enjoy techno-thrillers, espionage or aviation.
