The Wandering Warriors: Includes two bonus stories Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 263 ratings

A 1940s baseball team finds itself in Ancient Rome in this action-filled romp by two award-winning writers—also includes two bonus stories.

In this alternate-history adventure, a 1940s barnstorming baseball team, led by retired baseball player and spy Moe Berg, is transported from rural Illinois to Ancient Rome, just after the death of Emperor Septimius Severus.

The Romans—who actually played a game called “small ball”—put the captured team to work teaching baseball to the gladiators for a major Colosseum event . . . that turns into an over-the-top life or death finale.

Baseball hijinks, a wild ride through Rome in a careening team bus, a hint of romance, and some viciously good hitting and fielding—but amid all this adventure, will the Wandering Warriors make it home? Will the widowed empress escape the fate her evil son has in mind for her? Will the rattletrap team bus find its way through time and space (and Roman roads) back to Illinois? And what will happen when Chicago White Sox owner Grace Comiskey shows up?

This book was a really fun read. The universe filled in as the story went along. There was action, adventure, intrigue...no magic, but then again it is steam punk vs magic based, so that worked out. I hope this is part of a series or these characters come back in other books as I want to see what happens next. I recommend this book.

Like many of the other reviewers have already said. This is really more of an anthology of stories than one solid one they are all interconnected through the backdrop of an impending war. I have never read a Mike Resnick story before but I found this one entertaining enough to want to read others. This story did a good job at being humorously entertaining while doing a good job of developing the characters. It did start to bog down a little in the third part but over all a very good read. I look forward to reading one of his novels.

Wow, what a fun, mind teasing, yet well researched collaboration by Rick Wilber and Alan Smale:

Original title considered:
‘Amor Autem Basis Pilla,’ (translating from. Latin to:
‘But Love Is Baseball’

p122 depicts how the collaboration of these fine writers got started.

‘The Wandering Warriors’
- Alan Smale & Rick Wilber

Also included in this same book is a short story by Alan Smale:
‘A Trade in Serpents’

and a novelette by Rick Wilber:
‘Stephen to Cora to Joe, or, The Truth As I Know It’

This is a great beginning to what I hope will be a very long series of books. The world and characters are very interesting. I hope to be reading another adventurous tale soon.

Well defined characters with an interesting storyline hat kept my interest throughout. Looking forward to the next in the series that I’m hoping will come soon.

This has a sort of "boys own" adventure feel to it. If you like that sort of Tom Swift-style story, it's a lot of fun. The dialogue isn't always the best, but the descriptions of the scenes are highly cinematic. There is a lot of interesting history alluded to, as well, which may be enough to keep me coming back for a sequel.

These are simple stories with no real surprises. To put it simply the book begins with a bunch of people who are telling war stories - without actually going to war. So they go to war, where they find things are fairly obvious (shooting, dying, etc) with nothing exciting. So they come back and tell whoppers about what happened in the war. The only real problem I had with these stories is that there are lots of characters in this bar and it's hard to keep them all straight as I progressed through the three versions of their lives.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kurzweilig und logisch

Sehr schnell durchgelesen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, now awaiting the sequel

I really enjoyed this, the only downside is that it is obviously intended to be the first book in a new setting so the ending wasn't quite as cleared up as I'd like. As long as there are more in the series though that's not a problem :-).

Entre le steampunk et le western, ce roman est très bien mené. Les personnages sont intéressants, l'histoire bien montée, l'univers original. Que dire de plus ?

This was a good introduction to world building from an author who has a wealth of experience to share. I'm sure there's more he could add to flesh this out further.
I can't help feeling a lot was left out.
