The Beating Heart of a Mind (The Mind Sleuth Series) Kindle Edition

Bullied to death in the boardroom?

Private Investigator Rebecca Marte doubted it. Since when would the President and CEO of a highly successful company find the criticisms of his subordinates so destructive to his self-image that he would commit suicide? That, however, was what her new client, Nicole Veles, claimed.

Nicole painted a toxic, if not criminal picture of defamation leading up to the man’s death. And after his demise, one of his most vocal detractors ascended to his position. That was enough to raise Rebecca’s suspicions. She took the job.

But as she began her investigation, hints that Nicole’s beliefs were tainted by her history became difficult for Rebecca to ignore. Two years earlier, Nicole had been kidnapped, and she still bore the mental and emotional scars of abuse and captivity. She’d cut all connections to her friends and fled her past by relocating to Colorado where no one knew her. She took a job where long-term relationships were impossible, save one stubborn, older woman who wouldn’t take no for an answer … and who just happened to be the wife of the suicide victim.

When everyone else thought the man’s death, while tragic, was just the consequence of high-pressure business and depression over the loss of his business, could Rebecca trust anything to the contrary that her new client told her?

“As with his previous mysteries, Bruce M. Perrin excels in an investigative profile that is as much a psychological analysis as a detective’s deductions.” - D. Donovan, Sr. Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

Review

"The Beating Heart of a Mind adds to the blossoming Mind Sleuth series with a vivid story of corporate pressures, marital discord, suicide, and a mystery. These lead P.I. Rebecca Marte on a complicated journey to uncover the motivations behind the bullying in the boardroom that ultimately leads to the company president's death.

Rebecca's new client (a friend of the dead man's wife, Nicole Veles) paints a vivid picture of the influences that led to the president's demise and the succession of his most virulent opponent. Once Rebecca accepts the job, however, she comes to perceive that her new client's psychological history may have contributed to the woman's suspicions more than the facts of the case.

As Rebecca delves into a series of events that expose the underbelly of interpersonal and business relationships, she comes to believe that the truth lies hidden among the fabrications truly believed and those constructed solely to deceive.

As with his previous mysteries, Bruce M. Perrin excels in an investigative profile that is as much a psychological analysis as a detective's deductions. Tension is well-developed, whether it's psychological revelations that involve Rebecca more deeply in her client's life than she'd imagined, the wedge between client and investigator driven home by the victim's wife, or the probe of a business structure that supports dangerous undercurrents.

The Beating Heart of a Mind is highly recommended for mystery libraries and readers, but its strength goes beyond the usual whodunit. Ideally, it will also be enjoyed by business readers and used as discussion material in book clubs devoted to novels of psychological, business, and social inspection, as well."

About the Author

Bruce Perrin has been writing for more than 25 years, although you will find much of that work in professional technical journals or conference proceedings. But after completing a PhD in Industrial/Organization Psychology and spending a number of years in the research and development of advanced learning technology with a major aerospace company, he's now applying his background to writing. Not surprisingly, most of his work falls in the techno-thriller, mystery, and hard science fiction genres, examining where technology and psychology intersect, now and in the future.

In addition to pounding the keyboard, Bruce likes to tinker with home automation and is an avid hiker, logging nearly 2,500 miles a year in the first nine years of Fitbit ownership. When he is not on the trails, he lives with his wife in Aurora, CO. For a closer look at his writing life, book reviews, and progress on his upcoming works, please join him at brucemperrin.com.

This is book six of this series and is an interconnected standalone. The mystery of this story is solved at the end, but events for some of the characters lives are told throughout all of the books.

Both Rebecca and Nicole are smart, strong and determined. The web of lies and dark secrets make it hard to figure out who to trust and what to believe. This story will have you second guessing wether it was suicide or murder with each twist and turn.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I think I would’ve enjoyed it better had I started this series at the beginning. While it says that it can be read as a standalone, I feel like I would’ve liked it better had I gotten more of the backstory for Rebecca and Nicole. There are multiple times that each of their personal history is mentioned. I gathered enough to put some of the pieces together to figure each backstory out, but now I have to go read the rest in the series to get the full effect.

I received an advanced readers copy via Booksprout. These thoughts and opinions are my own and are left voluntarily after reading for my own personal enjoyment.

I thought the plot was interesting but I don't recommend reading it until reading the first books in the series. I liked it enough anyways that I am going to go read those now. I recommend these to readers who are not expecting a plot twist, this isn't that kind of book.

I received the book for free from library thing as an # EarlyReader

Review of eBook

At Jen’s Place, a temporary shelter for survivors of domestic abuse in Lone Tree, Colorado, an angry husband comes in search of his wife. Kyle Logan meets his match, however, in Nicole Veles, the woman who runs the home and keeps Logan from dragging his wife, Linda, out of the house.

Seventeen months later, Nicole is in Saint Louis, seeing the aid of FBI agent-turned Private Investigator Rebecca Marte. Nicole tells the investigator that she killed a man, but she wants Rebecca to look into the supposed suicide of Randolph Peterson.

Did someone inside the HomeRight home warranty company orchestrate events in order to cause Peterson to kill himself? Or, perhaps, the man’s death was not suicide at all.

=========

Sixth in the author’s Mind Sleuth series, Rebecca Marte returns to investigate the circumstances behind an apparent suicide. Nicole Veles, emotionally damaged from the treatment she endured during her kidnapping some two years earlier, is slowly finding her way back to herself once again. And, although readers are likely to wish for a bit more explanation/information regarding Nicole’s kidnapping, torture, and escape, the book does work as a standalone for readers who have not read the earlier volumes in the series.

Kyle Logan’s antics pull readers into the telling of the tale from the outset. As the narrative unfolds, readers are kept guessing as new revelations change everything they think they know; the suspenseful, tension-filled tale keeps readers turning those pages as swiftly as possible.

Nuanced, well-developed characters and a strong sense of place anchor the narrative; realistic interactions between the characters keep the story credible as the plot twists and turns, heading toward a denouement readers are sure to appreciate.

Highly recommended.

Plot twists for sure. Good storylines, good characters. I was intrigued from the beginning with Nicole & her reasoning behind everything... especially concerning herself. It made my mind go in investigation mode wanting to know if it was all true or false or what. Good way to hook people in. It did me for sure.
