Dramacon, Volume 1 Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 134 ratings

A teen manga writer’s first anime convention becomes drama central in the first entry of this romantic manga series that blends humor with, of course, drama.

When Christie settles in the Artist Alley of her first ever anime convention, she only sees it as an opportunity to promote the comic she has started with her boyfriend. But conventions are never what you expect, and soon the whirlwind of events sweeps Christie off her feet and changes her life. Who is the mysterious cosplayer that won’t even take off his sunglasses indoors? What do you do when you fall in love with a guy who is going to be miles away from you in just a couple of days?

Praise for Dramacon, Volume 1

“Smart, witty, and moving. . . . Using every visual manga convention to its fullest, this ripping little tale is strong and expressive enough to reveal real emotional depth.” —Publishers Weekly

“A fun read from beginning to end, Dramacon proves to be compelling enough that you'll be wanting to find out how things turn out in volume 2. It deals with pretty interesting everyday life relationship matters, so if you’re into that kind of thing and enjoy comedy, you'll definitely find it to your liking.” —IGN.com

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set at a comic convention, this story shouldn't be as entertaining and fun as it is. But it's a little gem: the plot trips along, and though the art is good, not breathtaking, the Russian-born Canadian artist/author has clearly mastered the now international visual language of manga. The heroine is Chris, a self-willed girl who is taken for granted by her boyfriend, Derek. Chris meets the dark and mysterious Matt, who seems to understand her completely, and hijinks ensue. Sounds corny as hell, but the narrative is smart, witty and moving. The characters tap into the manga archetypes, which makes them breathe and have moments of being larger-than-life. Chris goes through self-doubt to self-knowledge and learns a bit of bravery along the way. It's astonishing to reflect that all the action takes place in the hotel rooms and convention floors where kids sell their homemade comics. Under the noses of adults, these "cons" have slipped into popular culture as a new land of rebels, mentors and wisdom—what road trips and the Haight once were. They're a perfect place for a growing-up story. Using every visual manga convention to its fullest, this ripping little tale is strong and expressive enough to reveal real emotional depth. (Nov.)

I found this comic on INKR studio a manga collector spin off from MangaRocks and I really loved it and decided to buy it (as well as the other volumes)! Although it is a shojo manga it isn't sweet and syrupy but very funny in the fundamental flaws of the main characters. Furthermore there are many plot twists that really make the story interesting and I found out I just couldn't put the kindle down until I finished reading Dramacon. What more to say? Two thumbs way up and buy it, 'cause you'll love it. Both story and art!

Excellent story, the themes of self respect and moving on are mature but wrapped in gut busting humor. Nostalgic must read.

CW: sexual assault, attempted rape

This is such a cute little convention story, wahh! I don't always LOVE the art style, but it's pretty cute overall. It also made me really miss the craziness of conventions. I love Christie, and her interaction with a manga artist/author she loves was PROBABLY the best part of this entire volume. Seriously, I laughed out loud. I also adore Matt and his sister (whose name eludes me at the moment).

This is the first in a series of 3 books. Apparently each is set a year apart as they meet up at the same convention. I'm definitely going to read volume 2, where Christie comes back with a new (BETTER) artist to partner with and find out Matt has a girlfriend! OH NO!

Oh, that was extremely nice!

I've already read something by Svetlana Čmakova in the anthology Telling Tales and her contribution was the best. So I kept her under my radar till the day I could put my hands on the whole series.

And boy, I was right!

I really enjoyed the first volume of her series. Christie is a perfect main character and I love the part when she's all sweet and innocent towards Matt one second and all mad and devilish to Derek the next. I really like the art and the way the author could play with her style drawing the characters both in a serious way but also as super-deformed figures.

The plot was quite good, too. I was on the verge of virtually kicking Derek where the sun doesn't shine but in the end Christie herself gives him what he deserves. Eh, eh, eh. :-)

Really looking forward to volume 2.
