Gettysburg in Color: Volume 2: The Wheatfield to Falling Waters Kindle Edition

4.9 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

Artificial Intelligence meets Gettysburg. And it is a marvelous pairing. Patrick Brennan, a long-time student of the Civil War, published author, and an editorial advisor for The Civil War Monitor magazine, has teamed up with his technology-astute daughter Dylan Brennan to bring the largest Civil War battle to life in the remarkable 2-volume study: Gettysburg in Color. Volume 1 covers Brandy Station to the Peach Orchard, and Volume 2 covers The Wheatfield to Falling Waters. Rather than guess or dabble with the colors, the Brennans used an artificial intelligence-based computerized color identifier to determine the precise color of uniforms, flesh, hair, equipment, terrain, houses, and much more. The result is a monumental full-color study of the important three-day battle that brings the men, the landscape, and the action into the 21st Century. The deep colorization of battle-related woodcuts, for example, reveals a plethora of details that have passed generations of eyes unseen. The photos of the soldiers and their officers look as if they were taken yesterday. The use of this modern technology shines a light on one Gettysburg photographic mystery in particular. Colorizing some of the battle’s “death” images revealed the presence of Union and Confederate dead that may help determine the previously unknown location of the photographs. That may also be a “first” when it comes to Civil War photography, as Pat Brennan explains: “It was long believed this was an image of seven dead Union soldiers. In fact, only five are Union men. The other two are Confederates. I am still researching the issue, but I believe this may be the only photo we have from the entire Civil War that portrays dead from both sides.” In the early 1960s, the unique presentation in Bruce Catton’s The American Heritage Picture History of the Civil War spurred the interest of a generation of readers. With its sweeping prose and stunning visuals, Gettysburg in Color will have a similar impact on future generations as it takes its place as one of the most influential titles on the American Civil War.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Patrick and Dylan Brennan’s astonishing success with Volume 1 of Gettysburg in Color is only slightly less astonishing than the vividness of their skillful computerized colorizations of 19th-century images. We are used to seeing the Civil War in black, white, and gray only, as though through a glass darkly. But to see the portraits and landscapes of battle made by Brady and Gardner, or the line-drawings of Battles and Leaders, flare suddenly into life through colorization is a welcome shock not far removed from my first view of the great paintings of X. R. Smith, Thure de Thulstrup, and Paul Dominique Philippoteaux. This is a book to read and to look at to see a new Civil War.”
Dr. Allen C. Guelzo, Senior Research Scholar, The Council of the Humanities Director, Initiative on Politics and Statesmanship, James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions, Princeton University

“Amazon subsidiary Goodreads estimates that approximately 30,000 books have been published about the Battle of Gettysburg. Relating the history of that battle in clear and compelling prose, Patrick and Dylan Brennan’s Gettysburg in Color stands proudly in the front rank of those volumes. The book’s striking feature is its effective use of hundreds of period photographs and drawings to help narrate the story. Drawing on modern technology, the Brennans used artificial intelligence identifiers to reproduce many of those images in color, revealing significant details heretofore largely overlooked. Gettysburg in Color occupies a prominent niche on my bookshelf.”
Gordon C. Rhea, author of the 5-volume series on the Overland Campaign

“Such a seemingly simple act of adding color to well-known photographs of the war unleashes a powerful effect. Patrick and Dylan Brennan’s Gettysburg in Color offers a new and revealing look at one of America’s best-known campaigns. The green of the fields, the brown of the dirt roads, and the blue of men’s eyes bring the war into closer proximity, adding another layer of humanity to those who fought and survived the battle.”
Dr. Caroline E. Janney, Director, John L. Nau Center for Civil War History, John L. Nau III Professor in History of the American Civil War and award-winning author of Ends of War

“Offering a new way to learn about the battle of Gettysburg, their two books will likely be useful for visitors to the battlefield, or anyone seeking to learn more about the events. This reviewer was thrilled and amazed by the inventiveness, audacity, and dedication that went into this work, and recommends it highly.”

Gettysburg in Color Volume 2 is an absolute gem for history enthusiasts and Civil War buffs alike. As a fan of the first volume, I eagerly delved into this follow-up edition, and I must say, the Brennans have truly outdone themselves. This book is a stunning testament to their dedication and passion for bringing the past to life through vivid color photography.

One of the standout features of this book is the exceptional quality of the color photos, particularly when viewed on the Kindle app. The images leap off the screen with incredible clarity and depth, immersing the reader in the heart of the Civil War. It's remarkable to see the battlefields, uniforms, weaponry, and even the faces of those who fought, all in such stunning detail. The color adds a layer of realism, making the historical moments feel tangible and immediate.

The presentation of the battles is where this book truly shines. The Brennans expertly weave together historical accounts, personal narratives, and detailed analysis to provide a comprehensive and engaging overview of the battles at Gettysburg. Even as a history fan, I found myself discovering new details and insights about the battles that I had previously been unaware of. It's evident that the authors have meticulously researched their subject matter, presenting the information in an easily digestible manner.

Furthermore, the authors' ability to humanize the soldiers and convey the emotional toll of war is commendable. The inclusion of personal accounts from the participants adds a poignant touch to the narrative, reminding us of the human cost of such a pivotal moment in American history. This book goes beyond presenting mere facts and figures; it breathes life into the past, allowing the reader to empathize with the struggles and sacrifices made by those who fought at Gettysburg.

This book adds a wonderful new perspective to one of the most famous battles ever fought. Colorized contemporary photos, period paintings and sketches, easy-to-follow maps, and a compelling narrative help bring those tragic days to life. I have taken student groups to Gettysburg many times over the years, often in conjunction with a seminar on the battle. I wish this book had been available then. It would have helped students visualize the events of those three monumental days. If you want a new perspective on Gettysburg, this is an excellent choice.

Gettysburg in Color Vol 2 follows the success and the style of its predecessor. Picking up on the events of Longstreet's Assault of Day 2 and working through Lee's retreat, Authors Brennan again provides us a unique perspective with AI-colored illustrations previously seen only in black and white. A well-crafted narrative, combined with maps, and colorized drawings, portraits, and pictures, dramatizes the events of this seminal battle and provides a different and vivid view to modern eyes. Well worth the purchase for your library!

I had two great uncles, the Polsky Bros, who ran a photo studio in East London around turn of the century. I recall as a young kid, looking at a small pile of these passed down photos in the form of cartes de visite (small photographic portraits of people, mounted on a piece of card) in a kind of historic thrall. As far back as I can remember, I've had a fixation on things historic and old photos, specifically, became a portal to the past wherein I could look upon long dead relatives and their friends and try to imagine by facial expression or physical posture, what was going on for them in their world as the camera's shutter opened and closed. I was transported and it made for hours of daydreaming in this world that would never exist again. Because of the type of media it was, black and white as the only contrast, an almost reverent and museum-like quality attached itself to these photos and as candid as they might have been, there was an unavoidable remoteness to them that functioned as a thin barrier to truly engaging with them in the here and now.

Flash forward to January of 2023; Pat Brennan and daughter Dylan, had produced book of colorized photos of the American Civil War, focusing on one specific and major battle, Gettysburg. Gettysburg in Color Vol 1 (Brandy Station to the Peach Orchard) addressed this first part of the battle in a stunning textual narrative accompanied by an even more stunning collection of painstakingly colorized photos and drawings. On the heels of this major accomplishment comes Gettysburg in Color Vol 2 (The Wheatfield to Falling Waters) the sequel and companion piece to the first volume. The wonderful and thorough text picks up right where Volume 1 left off, continuing apace with the same earlier intensity & description. It's hard to say which is more powerful -- the crackling narrative or the startlingly real colorized photos, which had the effect of rendering the various northern and southern players in this 160 year old drama, as contemporary as looking at photos of current friends.

Just as the photographic technology of the time, mid 1800s, afforded us the ability to see in a kind of hyper realistic way, the people and surroundings during that period and conflict; our current technology allows us to turn stiff two dimensional photo captures into vibrant, realistic and accurate color portrayals that fairly leap off the page, ultimately (for this reader) humanizing this upheaval in our collective history. The hunger for historical accuracy and thoughtful decision that went into the new generation of these images cannot be stressed or applauded enough. Beginning with the attendant remoteness of the original black and white photos, the ability to render these into coherent color images has, for me, broken through the barrier to fully engaging with this work.

Kudos, once again, to Pat and Dylan Brennan for another exquisite and unique contribution to Civil War scholarship.

This book really brought the battle alive to me. My great-grandfather fought in the Peach Orchard and on Cemetery Ridge. A private whom did his duty, like Private Evans.

As a Civil War buff, I was very pleased to come across this book. Initially, I purchased it for the colorized photos; however, I found the actual account of Gettysburg to be very well written and incisive…almost as if it were from a battlefield novel. Although I wasn’t quite so taken with the photos of the geography and battlefield scenes, the color images of both the everyday soldiers and the leaders involved in the conflict was amazing. For example, the genial nature of Cadmus Wilcox (as described by historians) and the fierce determination of John Gibbon could clearly be seen in these detailed photographs. All in all, I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Civil War.
