Jacqui has matured over the course of the books but the price has been so high. And even though the Families have divulged more to each other than they ever have, there are still so many unanswered questions. Because of that, I think this volume has more of a "cliffhanger" feel.

(Apropos of nothing in particular, I have seen a model/actress who looks exactly as I would imagine Jacqui. Her name is Whitney Peak and she's in the Chanel Mademoiselle TV ads.)

This book is the tenth in a fantastic series by Patricia Loofbourrow.

The series offers the best of gritty film noir detective stories set in a post-apocalyptic retro-futuristic art-deco steampunk city that is clearly in a state of decay – mechanically, politically and spiritually.
Jaqui Spadros has ascended to queen/matriarch of the Spadros family. As she struggles to discover the next twist in the wicked plot concocted by the Red Dog Gang, her husband, Anthony Spadros asks Jaqui for her help in solving a possible murder. But as one of their closest friends and confidant disappears, Jaqui and Anthony must join together to discover what happened.
The surprise twists and turns will catch you up so you cannot put this book down. I’m retired law enforcement so it is rare that I don’t have the mystery solved within the first few chapters, but the crafty writing by Ms. Loofbourrow has me completely stumped! I love it!
What will Jaqui need to do to solve the mystery in time? Will she ever discover why she is the target of the Red Dog Gang? How is the Red Dog Gang connected to the Families? Who are her real enemies? If you like gritty detective novels, family intrigue, and alternate history science fiction, take a deep dive into this series. Highly recommended!

Once again we are entering Briges with the Red Dog Conspiracy series, and I can vouch for this installment that it will bring some answers. However, once again there will be still some more questions coming especially with the revelations that we will read here. I think this one is the most "talked" one, but it was needed to close some cases efficiently.
I can't wait for the next book from Ms. Loofbourrow.

I read this book twice and picked up things that I missed the first time through. Someone is strangling the citizens and it appears that the 4 Families don’t care. What is the game plan. What is the Red Dog Gang up to and who is directing them. The Families get together for a meeting to discuss what is happening and several secrets are revealed that helps to explain somewhat is happening but more questions need to be answered. Can Bridges survive with a failing magma generator and can the 4 Families survive with the conspiracies surrounding them? Can they work together for a common cause? There are many characters in this series and I do find myself getting confused with all their name changes. Jacqui is a strong and intelligent woman and is now the Queen of Spadros, so her every move is scrutinized. She is still investigating the reasons for the kidnapping of a young boy. Tony is supportive of her and asks for her help. Spies seem to be everywhere. A great cast of characters. Love the analogy to a deck of cards. High cards, low cards, making a play & turning your cards in at your death. Looking forward to more answers in the next chapter of this series but feeling the need to go back and reread from the beginning of the series. I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest opinion.

The Four of Clubs: Part 10 of the Red Dog Conspiracy is another intriguing installment to this dark, psychological, steam-powered future mystery series that is unputdownable. This crime family following is full of suspense and the storyline keeps you turning the pages. The writing style is captive and showcases the author's talent in writing a solid mystery read. This could be a mini-tv series and as the plot unfolds, more unanswered questions arise. I cannot wait to read more in this series. Jacqui's character is compelling and brings so much to the story. The supporting characters bring their own lure to this riveting story. This story is a composite that hits all the spots of this spellbinding genre. An excellent chapter to this series. I highly recommend reading this book and series from the beginning.

An ongoing epic in the making. With every book she writes in this series she expands an already well-developed world. Captivating, spine-tingling, suspense-building read, I'll be reading more from this author and I look forward to the next book in this series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

More plots against the Families - and not only from within Bridges. It becomes clear that if the current status (and even Bridges itself) is to survive the four ruling Families must work together. A year after the calamitous events at the climax of Chapter 9 the new King and Queen of Spades call a conference to achieve that end. Further deaths occur - some natural and some definitely not - and a figure from the past emerges... Add to the mix the threat to the city's infrastructure with the failing Magma Generators and the future looks decidedly grim.

Those cryptic comments will make sense to the already converted - new readers are advised to seek out and read the earlier Chapters and perhaps the complementary books as well. This is a splendidly conceived and executed series about a future world that has developed from the ruins of a planet devastated by catastrophic events and is thoroughly recommended. It has been described, not too inaccurately, as 'neo-noir steampunk' - and there are definite historical and detective elements as well. Complex but rewarding.
