4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 2,098 ratings

A socially awkward widow is forced to take boarders into her Paris home, in this smart, witty novel of love, loneliness, friendship, and metamorphosis.

Living in France among people she hardly understands, Annie has had trouble leaving the house since the death of her husband. And since home happens to be a small place nestled in the heart of Paris, why would she ever want to? But when unexpected events threaten her beloved home, Annie has no choice but to find lodgers—quickly.

After placing an ad, Annie attracts tenants with the kind of baggage she isn’t prepared for: a long-legged, cool-headed ex-model on the run from her abusive husband; a frail young woman harboring a possible death wish; a mysterious artist; and an infuriating blue-blooded Frenchman—and all soon threaten Annie’s way of life in ways she never anticipated.

But when Annie finds herself reluctantly but actively engaged in the lives of her tenants she discovers she might just free herself in the process . . .

Review

"I picked up Hidden in Paris because I love all things Paris. I had no idea how deeply I would fall in love with this book and the characters that populated it. They were exquisitely complex, beautifully flawed, and endearingly charming." Desi1257, Amazon reviewer

The story was unique and captivating from the first page. Very well written. The characters are so exciting. I would love a sequel. I didnt want it to end. I love Paris and all things French and this hit the spot!
Jan G, Amazon Reviewer

Such delightfully, well-rounded characters seem to be this talented author's specialty as she deftly pulls you into their world and their lives. It was a quick and thoroughly enjoyable read as I couldn't put it down.
 Shari Peneira, Amazon reviewer

"I loved the characters, the different ways they evolved, the city, the cuisine, and the insight into Parisian life. Wonderful read."

Good character development, also interesting. It made me laugh. By the time the end of the book came, I wanted it to go on. I felt like I was leaving friends. This is the first book I read by this author but will read more.

I loved this book. The characters were so believable, and I loved the setting in Paris. Very descriptive. I wish it hadn’t ended so abruptly. I guess I just wanted the book to go on longer!

"Hidden in Paris" is an engaging, fast paced novel. After the death of her husband, Annie is threatened with bankruptcy and the risk of losing her three story, large, beloved home located in Passy, an upscale area of Paris. In an effort to save her home, this landlord-to-be places newspaper ads in the United States to entice potential tenants to "start over in Paris." The four tenants arrive, each with dysfunctional lives that are in need of healing. Annie's tenants include an ex-model with an abusive husband, a frail young bulimic woman, and a French artist. In addition, another French man adds challenges to Annie's life. In the end the greatest reward to Annie's efforts is the realization that she herself is saved in the process of helping others. Characters are well developed with plausible dialog. French culture is realistically portrayed and descriptions of life in Paris is factual. High recommendations for this engaging novel.

Writing is not an easy craft by any stretch and I have the utmost respect for all published authors. (And no, I'm not a frustrated unpublished author!). I liked this novel, it was good and a quick read. My wish is that the first third of it was condensed: felt slow to get into the "good stuff." A lot of time spent setting up the story & then too little of the heart of it. Simply felt unbalanced to me. Yet, who am I to judge?? Really liked most of the characters -- interesting & seemingly realistic. Kids were adorable. I just wanted a bit more Paris in it & a little less "agony aunt" stuff. Such a beautiful city.

I've been contemplating this review for a few days because I really don't know how to express just how wonderful this book was. Corine Gantz has landed on my automatic buy list for authors, and I dearly hope she's hard at work on her next novel because I can't wait to read it! I picked up Hidden in Paris because I love all things Paris. I had no idea how deeply I would fall in love with this book and the characters that populated it. They were exquisitely complex, beautifully flawed, and endearingly charming. Told from 6 points of view, Corine expertly weaves their tales in and out of each other, revealing secrets, hopes, fears, desires, and lots of drama. And the writing. Wow. Simply beautiful. At times it was hilarious. Other times, naked and heartaching. But it was always compelling, absorbing. I wanted to live inside the book with Annie and Lola and Althea. Rent a room in Annie's beloved house and mingle with the tenants myself. And I just didn't want it to end. From the vivid descriptions of the scenery, the sights, sounds, smells, to the complicated relationships and dark secrets, I was completely transported, moved to a world that was fascinating, enchanting, and even unsettling. It was a wonderfully absorbing journey, following all six characters as they confronted their demons and their fears, forged ahead in the face of doubt and anxiety, and finally found their way to happiness. Honestly, I'm counting it among one of my top reads ever. Absolutely loved it!

"Hidden in Paris" begins by introducing the reader to three separate characters and their troubled lives. They come together when one of the characters, Annie who lives in Paris, advertises rooms to rent in her house in order to solve her financial problems and the other characters respond to the advertisement. Under the one roof their lives come together and inevitably their problems too. The story of how they develop strong relationships and enrich each others lives is an enjoyable read. As the story moves to its conclusion, the reader is taken on an exciting ride to discover what will finally happen to each of the characters;all of them having come so far within the pages of the novel. The ending is not neatly wound up for each character, to the author's credit, but the main character who has struggled from the first pages, finds the contentment she was seeking. I thoroughly enjoyed "Hidden in Paris" and for me the strengths of the work lie in its well developed and contrasting characters and the concluding chapters which with suspense and tension skilfully bring the crises of the story together. I also enjoyed the well drawn dialogue between characters. The setting of Paris enhances the story for us Francophiles and adds another enjoyable dimension. A most enjoyable read.

Women helping women and all set in Paris what’s not to like? Enjoyed the pace of this book and all the beautiful words used to describe the streets and neighborhoods! Even the snobbish people!

I havent read a novel in a while and dont really like to waste time reading a lot of the "best sellers" that are around at the moment. But this was a nice easy read about a group of diverse (albeit a bit predictable and stereotyped) people who end up living together in Paris. I really did enjoy the feel good factor of the whole thing and particularly as it was set in Paris and had a nice connection with the city. There was a lot of talk of cooking and food in it although i cant say that was a feature that made it appealing as far as i am concerned - not because i dont care for food but because it wasnt particularly well described. There was some sense with other reviewers and indeed with the author herself that the food component had some special merit. All I would say is dont read it thinking you are going to be transported on a gastronomic epic - it definitely isnt that. So, all in all a pleasant read - good night time or beach reading material thatt you dont have to dissect after every sentence to make meaning of.

5 stars because i can find no fault with it The characters are believable and the descriptions of Paris take me back there. The story is so gripping to me because there no parts of it which caused me to think "Nah that would never have happened" There are no saints in here just real life flawed people Basic storyline is young widow with 3 boys left the States with her husband and set about being the perfect wife, cooking French food and lovingly restoring the worst house on one of the best streets in Paris Widowhood forces her to rethink her finances so she puts an ad in various newspapers in the states for tennants The ones she finds are inevitably runnind away from something and then there is her friend of a friend the almost starving artist in Paris who takes her final room That,s all i am giving away!

Hidden in Paris tells the story of how people and a house in Paris changes the lives of newcomers (strangers) to the house. The theme is reminiscent of Under the Tuscan Sun, but with more characters involved.
