4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 3,271 ratings

Laurell K. Hamilton has captivated readers with her gritty, seductive tales of vampire hunter Anita Blake for thirty bloody fantastic years. Now, in the thirtieth novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, wedding bells are ringing. But before Anita can make it to the altar, she must face an obstacle more daunting than any supernatural threat....

Necromancer Anita Blake is small, dark, and dangerous. Her turf is the city of St. Louis. Her job: U.S. Marshal—Preternatural Branch. She’s faced horrifying monsters and brutal killers and come out the other side still standing.

Considering how things in her life tend to go, Anita never expected her walk down the aisle with Jean-Claude to go smoothly. They’ve already been confronted with naysayers and a power-hungry ancient evil, but now Anita has to do the one thing that actually scares her: introduce her very religious, very human relatives to her fiancé—the newly crowned vampire king of America.

As Anita tries to keep the peace between the family she left behind and the family she’s chosen, dark forces jump at the chance to take advantage of the chaos. With her happy-ever-after at risk and everyone’s immortal souls hanging in the balance, Anita grapples with a hard truth: Blood makes you related, but loyalty makes you family.

I’ve been reading this book for 17 years, finally reaching 30, I treated myself to hardcover instead of an ebook and this is what I got. Taped together pages. Now I’m having a hard time just reading the book, knowing that it’s not the forever copy I’m going to keep.

Arguably the best Anita Blake book.

It is definitely as good as my favorites Narcissus in Chains, Incubus Dreams and Cerulean Sins.

I had to force myself to not read this over the course of a few days and managed to make it last almost a week. haha

Slay starts out as a family dynamic book about what it is like when your family doesn't approve of the person you are marrying. Unexpectedly, this is extremely engaging. The author that has said multiple times that she writes sex and violence really well, has been underselling her interpersonal drama skills. These scenes were engrossing and wholly believable. I saw her family dynamic and believed they were real people.

From there we go into metaphysical problems and the Monster of the Week. Which might be the best she has ever created or reimagined. What if a Dragon was real? What if it was a Vampire? What if it wanted you to be his slave/wife/warlord so that he could rule the world and do the same to everyone you love? What if all of this was happening and while you were isolated, alone and betrayed?

Super Highlight of the Book: Chapter 47. The whole Mother Bear Goddess event was beautiful and felt more spiritual than any religion I have ever read about or experienced in person. I would be a convert if she was real.

She also deals with many of tensions and and clear problems that have been building since the Mother of All Darkness Trilogy. Things I have been saying for a while better be leading to something big and they did. As an added bonus some of them get away and I suspect will be coming back for revenge.

Spoilerish: Someone who has needed to die for a long time finally does and I literally cheered. The best part was it wasn't heroic or noble for them. It was pathetic and whining. Just the way they deserved it.

Realization: Jean Claude isn't an Incubus, but is instead a Care Bear. His power is to bring people together to spread love and hope, which in turn makes them all stronger. They work together and the 80's cartoon message is loud and clear. How often have we seen them Care Bear Stare a Big Bad into oblivion? Others have probably already made this connection, but this was the first for me and it really works.

There are multiple call backs to book 1 and what that early trauma and regret means. The dream scenes are emotional and heartwarming.

This might also be the first time we have seen a bibliography at the end of her book with sources she used for research as well as the 10ish books of the series that this is connected to.

Cons:... (I'm hard pressed to come up with one. A review can't be all sunshine and roses.) We are told in a scene that The 4 Horsemen are coming, but 1 of them doesn't and it is never mentioned where he is or what he is doing instead. (Seriously, this book is that good.)

Love Laurell, love Anita and her polygroup. I really like the way she physically describes her characters and what they are wearing. The storyline is always exciting. What fantasy freak hasn’t dreamed of sex with a gorgeous vampire?

I'm a long time LKH fan and I did enjoy this book. I did like the background insight into her family and upbringing. Edward has a small role in the book and that's always a win for me. There's a reference to her fear of flying being due to a plane issue when she was younger; it was nice to get an explanation, but fairly anticlimactic to wait so long for it. I think I would rather have no explanation at this point, she's said a lot that it's a phobia and there is no rational explanation for those by definition. However, it started off really slow and then had either a small plot hole or a continuity issue. SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD.

She calls and talks to Edward and he's with his daughter, then a few hours later he calls from an unknown number but was finishing a hunt in Kentucky?? Then at the end no one seemed to be looking for Trappolino, maybe I missed him being presumed as the other corpse but I don't think so. I'm hoping some of his mind powers were at work there and expect him in the next book. How the Bride and those blood oathed were able to betray them never really got explained, nor the case with the odd footprints she got called about, although I'm hoping that's just in the next book, too. We get teased about her grandma having powers, but they never try to figure out the type at all, which seems super odd since she got powers from her other grandmother. What if she's always had more but never realized it? The end just felt a bit rushed I guess. She was also much more scared and somewhat more passive than normal. Yeah, the marks were damaged, but she's been in situations like that before with either no marks or even the same type of threat of marks and handled it better. I guess she has more to lose now, though. I did enjoy the bonus scene!

If you love fantasy, Laurel Hamilton is an exciting read every time, but this book, Slay, is one of her best. The protaginst, Anita Blake, is a kick ass vampire slayer. Her book includes Anita preparing to marry the Master Vampire. Alot of creatures and humans don't want her to marry a vampire. Her father is extremely upset.

You will enjoy reading about the fractions for the marriage verus those that don't want it to happen. The mayhem is extremely fun to read, while her BFF, Ted, isn't too excited about having to dress up to be her "maid of honor." I love Ms. Hamilton's creativity and writing style. I wish I had her talent.

This is part of a series about Anita and Ted Forester; however, you can read it as a stand alone. You'll love it.

This was one of her finest books in quite some time. Non stop action, excellent characters and the sex was a counterpoint to the story - not a distraction or the entire focus. Some of the characters were unique and it just all flowed together perfectly while holding that exciting Anita Blake flavor...lol! I am on pins and needles with impatience for the next book which is hopefully well on its way! Hate to repeat myself but Ms. Hamilton, thank you bringing Anita back... which does not mean I expect or want all your books to be PG13 ongoing! Thanks for a 5+ star read!

I put off buying this because like a lot of people I feel like the books and massive increase in characters had lost their charm a bit but I’m still so invested in Anita, JC, Richard, Nathaniel & Micah that I gave in and bought this one. I thoroughly enjoyed it and for the first time in a long time read it from start to finish. It felt like a loving homage to past books, it felt like Anita of old. There were still some annoyances- like dithering over T&W. The hospital scene seemed to take far too much time. And I missed not really “seeing” Nathaniel and Micah in favour of more recent additions like Nicky. I loved that we’re getting to understand more about the female harlequin members. The action and the twists and turns of this book were fantastic. It was interesting getting to meet Anita’s family and getting to understand why she is how she is and it was great to see her realising that she may have misjudged members of her family. I still don’t really understand why every single attractive character male or female has to kiss, sleep with and fall in love with Anita, but in this book there definitely wasn’t as much of that. And I never thought I’d say this but I’m pleased to say there was no long dull sex scenes in this book. So yay!! I’m happy I bought this book and I look forward to the next 😊

I like this series. I enjoy the mythical elements and being kickass. The relationships are messy, but that's ok. I can always skip those parts if they bog down too much.
