Ned: A Navy Seal. The woman he loves...kidnapped. The stakes couldn't be higher/A Minnesota Marshalls novel (3) (The Marshall Family Saga Book 11) Kindle Edition
At the very least, he expected her to be waiting at the hotel for him three days after an emergency call-out. And maybe it was unreasonable to expect her to be sitting in the hotel, working on her watercolors—Shae, after all grew up in Montana, and she has adventure in her blood. So of course she’s going to go climb the beautiful Swiss mountains. Even make a friend.
But Ned isn’t thrilled with her new friend, and something about him doesn’t feel safe…
So she’s made some friends while waiting for Ned to return? Shae can’t believe that after years of sacrifice, Ned is actually angry at her—what did he expect, that she’d sit by the window? Dana and his friends are harmless, right?
Not so much. Because when Shae finds herself kidnapped, and brought to Russia, she fears the worst—she’s been swept up in a human trafficking ring. And when she’s sent to, of all places, Siberia how will Ned ever find her?
But Ned isn’t going to lose her—not after everything they’ve been through, and he’ll stop at nothing to rescue her. But when he discovers the real reason she’s been taken, he will have to become a traitor to his country if he wants her back.
Join the epic race to rescue Shae in the high-adrenaline book three in the Minnesota Marshalls series.

About the author
Although I attended the U of Minnesota, I’m a woodsy girl at heart. Or maybe I’m an adventurer—having lived and traveled all over the world, including Siberia, Russia as a missionary for eight years. That’s why my characters seem to get into one scrape after another—they’re too much like me! I love God, my family, my country, my church, and feel privileged every day to be able to write stories.
And my 'official' bio:
With nearly 2 million books sold, critically acclaimed novelist Susan May Warren is the Christy, RITA, and Carol award-winning author of over ninety novels. Known for her compelling plots and unforgettable characters, Susan has penned contemporary and historical romances, romantic suspense, thrillers, rom-coms, and Christmas novellas. I liked that the author also introduced Iris and Hudson’s story in this book. They had quite the storyline developing for themselves, as well, and I am excited to be diving into that one soon.
I loved that even though Ned and Shae had fought before she was kidnapped, they both knew that they loved each other and were genuinely devoted to one another. I really liked the “Gotcha” phrase that became a bit of a running quip between the two during the novel. Those were sweet moments for them. The romantic chemistry between Ned and Shae was great and it was fun to see Iris and Hudson spending time together, too, albeit not in a romantic way at the moment. This was a great story from start to finish.
I actually expected to like Ned's story the least, because it reminded me of Pete and Jess from the Search and Rescue series, whose love story/love triangle got kind of dragged out over several novels. However, Ned and Shae are not only a completely different couple with a completely different dynamic, but have a story that in my opinion is much easier to root for and relate to.
Granted, no. Most of us will never find ourselves on Russian prison ships (we hope) or trying to smuggle nuclear waste to the absolute wrong people to save lives (again, we hope). But I can personally attest to the fact, we will find ourselves in situations where what we thought we knew or needed takes a total 180-degree turn. We will find ourselves watching God show up in ways we thought He never would, even and especially if we've known Him for a long time. And really, for me at least, that's the best way to watch Him work. I'm always chagrined when He surprises me like that because I feel like, "Yeah, should've had a lot more faith." But I'm also always awed and reminded of how powerful and yet caring God is.
God certainly has plenty to work with here, through both the action and the characters. I don't think I've ever seen Susie May meld these two elements together so seamlessly in one of her action-driven novels. That is, in a Marshalls novel, I'm usually waiting for the "chasing/defeating bad guys" parts to slow down so I can get to know the heroes and what they're going through spiritually and emotionally. Here, I never got that. Instead, I was invested equally in the action and introspection at all times. I cared about how Shae, Ned, Iris, and Hudson were going to grow, but I desperately needed to see how exactly they were going to say, get off that floating gulag or keep Ned from spending the rest of his years in Leavenworth or save Shae from trafficking. I raced to finish at least one crucial action scene (on a fairly uncomfortable couch in a camper, while waiting for the effects of melatonin, so brownie points to Susie May for that alone).
I also loved the interplay between these characters, both as individuals with non-love interests and as couples. For instance, Iris and Hudson have some great banter throughout their scenes, especially when she's trying to keep him from absconding from his hospital room. I didn't crack up, but the little smirks and giggles I did get were much-needed. Shae and Ned also have some wonderful moments as they pick up where they left off and deal with both their needs to prove themselves and feel independent (ouch, Susie, get off my toe)! And I loved the presence of both Vikka and Judah especially. I have a high index of suspicion about Judah in particular, but won't spoil it. Let's just say, whether I'm right or not, that guy fulfilled his service with some major flying colors and deserves highest honors. His message of "You are never alone" comforted me as much as it did Shae--and I was the one safe and warm at home.
Finally, I want to commend Susie May for her action scenes here, just because I rarely if ever do so. I've never seen them "pop" quite so much from her, maybe because as I said, they're so well-balanced with the character development. Keep your eyes peeled for:
-Any interaction between Judah and Shae, but particularly Shae's uncovering of Judah's secret
-Shae's first escape attempt and the surprise after the cliffhanger
-The surprise twist on the bridge in Prague, which includes an interesting cameo
-Iris nursing Hudson, including the aforementioned banter. It happens after some understated action I can't spoil but lends some insight into his character I think will come in handy later
-That final call for Ned, and his decision (ah! Unexpected floaty hearts)!
Again, this might be the best Marshalls book yet, and it has me looking forward to Iris in a big way. If you haven't read this yet, grab a copy. And if you don't yet know the Marshalls at all, dive in, starting with Knox of the Montana Marshalls. Just be warned--set aside big chunks of time because you won't want to stop, don't drink too much caffeine, and maybe keep some melatonin supplements handy. This family may be hazardous to your sleep, in the best way possible.
I liked meeting Judah (more please), hope he’ll show up somewhere else one day??? And I loved the spiritual and redemptive aspects of this one. Ned had a beautiful faith that he stood firmly on, and invited Shea into too.
Great book, great continuing story, thank you, Susan, for giving us storylines of quality, that we can count on!
By Susan May Warren
Book #3 in the Minnesota Marshalls
Rating: 4.5/5
Wow. Susan May Warren just keeps getting better and better. This book is jam-packed with action, mystery, romance and everything you need to make a thrilling story! I love meeting all the other characters from her previous novels but you can still read this as a standalone (however, I highly recommend reading the other books in the series). The characters are relatable and flawed. The plot is complex and grabs your attention. The detail is well thought out and executed. I love how the author weaves her faith throughout the story.
Highly recommend this thrilling, action-packed romantic tale that will leave you wanting more!
My thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.
