A delightful puzzle of a romance from the New York Times–bestselling author who “knows the human heart and its immense capacity to love and to believe” (Observer-Reporter, Washington, Pennsylvania).

When crossword puzzle creator Leah Gates loses her Manhattan apartment, her friend, Victoria Lesser, offers her a place to stay. Sure, it’s a remote cabin in middle-of-nowhere, New Hampshire, but it’s a lifesaver for Leah. There’s no reason for her to question Victoria’s generosity—until she arrives during a rainstorm to find the small lodge burned down and in ruins.

With nowhere else to turn, Leah makes her way to the closest neighbor, an outdoorsman named Garrick Rodenhiser. Far from being a grizzly, old mountain man, Garrick is extraordinarily handsome—and kind enough to take in a bedraggled stranger for the night. Before long, the two independent, solitary souls find themselves entwined in each other’s lives and . . . not hating it, even when they realize they’re just pawns in one of Victoria’s matchmaking games. Still, there are secrets to be spilled that might bring their cozy confinement to an end—and stop their fresh start in its tracks . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Leah Gates designs crossword puzzles in the sanctuary of her apartment. For entertainment, she takes classes in origami and papier-mâché with her friend, Victoria Lesser. Divorced for two years and emotionally crushed by two miscarriages, Leah strictly avoids men. Then her landlord decides to convert the apartment building to condos, leaving Leah homeless. Victoria suggests an isolated mountain retreat she owns in New Hampshire, and city girl Leah impulsively agrees to go. However, she not only gets stuck in the mud, she also discovers that Victoria’s cabin burned down months earlier. The only neighbor is Garrick Rodenheiser. Once a megastar, he has exiled himself to the woods and lives in anonymity. He’s not happy that drenched, muddy Leah has shown up on his doorstep, and he’s even unhappier that his friend Victoria is apparently playing matchmaker. Two people seriously wounded by the outside world are reluctant to love again in Delinsky’s poignant romance, a classic now released in hardcover that is just as affecting as it was 26 years ago. --Shelley Mosley --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This story is a sweet romance by very unlikely people. Both had empty spots in their lives. They learned that love is its own reward.

I read this book many years ago and it stuck in my head. I am so glad that I was able to find it again, love this book, love the characters, although it does get a little soppy at the end. I think that the build up of the story is good.

No emotional rollercoaster in this delightful novel. A story of growth and love without all the manufactured drama so common in many books. Enjoyed it

Decent story line, but filled with too many typos. Poor proofreading!

Good characters, but a their backstories were awkward/contrived, sex was a bit uncomfortable. Ending was ok.

Leah is the main character and a very strong person. I would recommend this read for the sweetness and it will make you want to just go hug your hubby, bunches!

One of my favorite classic Delinsky novels. You absolutely have to suspend reality for this one, but I had no problem doing so. Loved the cozy feel of this book - makes me think of sitting near a fire with hot cocoa on a cold, snowy New England night.

This book got some pretty bad reviews. I would have missed a real treat if I had listened to them. I thought this book was excellent--many 'life' lessons to be learned. The passion, caring--no negative comments from this reader. Even the ending which so many commented on as being unreal was not out of the realm of possibility. I thought the hero was truly a hero with human weaknesses and strengths. The heroine was an 'everyday' girl who stole my heart.

This was my first time reading Delinsky--it won't be my last.

Not my favorite by this author. I was especially bothered by the constant mis-spelled words. Where was the proof reader? I guess it was me because I did report every mistake I found.
