Hellthread: Collected Poems Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

In Hellthread, Owen Muir, a renowned child and adult psychiatrist, shares a collection of poetry that explores the themes of death, plague, and the human experience. Drawing from his background in psychiatry, Muir delves into the depths of human emotion and the darker side of our existence, revealing the beauty and despair that often come hand in hand. Muir composed the poems on airplanes, and on his iPhone, one letter at a time.

These poems bear witness to the struggles we face and the resilience we exhibit in the face of adversity. Through rich imagery and evocative language, Muir's verses address topics such as hopelessness, disease, and the fine line that separates life and death. In the face of tragedies like the pandemic, Muir examines the ways in which we cling to hope and search for meaning.

Letters to Vesuvius is not just a collection of poems about death and disease; it is also a journey of self-discovery and an exploration of what it means to be human. The poems serve as a poignant reminder that even in the darkest times, we can find solace in the knowledge that we are not alone.

This volume will captivate readers who appreciate raw, powerful, and thought-provoking poetry. Owen Muir's Letters to Vesuvius is a testament to the human spirit and the resilience that lies within us all, making it a must-read for anyone seeking solace and understanding in a world riddled with uncertainty and despair.

Loose associations build on each other, immersing the reader in a dark exploration of trauma. Black humor and the author’s smart, unflinching twists keep the reader on their toes. If you’re interested in poetry, this is a fascinating read.

Owen Muir weaves a fascinating, gutting, entertaining, and thought-provoking tapestry of the world of psychiatry without requiring an MD of the reader. I'm a huge fan of Viktor Frankl's book "Man's Search for Meaning" and while this book takes a very different approach, it rings as a book that reads the reader as the book itself is read. He has a playful style that takes the emotional sting out of the many heavy topics he covers, often experimenting with words and concepts in ways that leads to "out of the box" thinking.

Muir forces us to confront the darker sides of being alive many of us choose to ignore. Victor Frankl and figures who have fostered resilience out of hardship and tragedy come to mind in this read. The perspective of a psychiatrist gives insight into the human psyche and how these universal experiences manifest under the surface, whether or not we choose to acknowledge them. Five stars!
