The Night Lords (The Henri Castang Mysteries) Kindle Edition
When a local businessman’s car is stolen, he’s more concerned about what’s inside—the body of his just-deceased grandmother. Then Parisian police Insp. Henri Castang is called to investigate the mysterious appearance of a woman’s body found in a car. But just when it seems like his latest case is about to solve itself, Henri discovers a baffling murder wrapped up in a simmering crisis of international relations.
On holiday with his family in France, a British high court judge found a naked corpse in the boot of his Rolls Royce. Having made the discovery upon arriving for dinner at a three-star Michelin restaurant, more than a few reputations are on the line. Now Castang must unravel a web of grim coincidences, lies, and political intrigue before another victim gets the boot.
This mystery from the author of the popular Inspector Van Der Valk novels combines “solid police work” with “the ever-surprising Freeling prose” for a cunning tale of crime detection set in the City of Light (Kirkus Reviews).

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2015Little is expected from the laid back laconic detective Henri Castang, but like Jackal's Inspector Lebel, he always gets his man (or woman). The victim in this particular tale takes shape slowly, and in effect is instrumental in abetting her own demise. The layers are peeled back slowly. Freeling writes wonderfully and always provides an unexpected twist - often where least expected - can't say more, spoilers and all that. I have enjoyed many of the Castang mysteries, especially when I need a little European flavor in my reading.
I must recommend another of Freeling's mythical melodramas written under the pseudonym Harry Kressing entitled "The Cook." It's a psychological tale that I've read a dozen times in the past 40 years (my god) and I enjoy it every time. It's back in print after decades, so don't miss it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
The ability to capture the French sense of humour and confer it into English is something unique. I have read such books in French and enjoyed them. I have never read on such in English. I must dint eat others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and pacy crime fiction
Very well written and thoughtful/observant about both society and character
Freeling invites you to sympathise - but not necessarily care - for the main actors in his drama
