The Cottage: A gripping suspense perfect for fans of Louise Douglas Kindle Edition
After a teenage boy makes allegations of inappropriate behaviour, Evie Cooper goes back to her hometown. There, her old friend Alex, now a solicitor, can help her navigate the situation, as well as offer her a job to tide her over. Evie rents a cottage while she waits for the crisis to blow over; it’s isolated and rundown, but it’s cheap, and she finds the rural quiet soothing.
After a local man, Jay, helps her out of a tight spot, she starts a friendship with him that quickly becomes romantic. But she senses a strange tension between Jay and Alex. Why does Jay seem to avoid Alex? Is there something Alex isn’t telling her—and why would he keep it secret?
Then Evie stumbles on a surprising revelation about Jay—and as the truth begins to emerge, she must decide who she can really trust . . .

About the author

I live in Cumbria, in Barrow-in-Furness, which is on the coast near the foothills of The Lakes. I studied science at college and specialised in it for my Bachelor's teaching degree, but my heart has always been tied up with books and reading. I walked away from a long teaching career because I wanted to write. I am married to a photographer and have two children- a thirty-nine-year-old daughter, and a twenty-two-year-old son, who is still at home with us. I am a passionate advocate for local communities- Barrow has a deep Victorian heritage and a Cistercian Abbey- and I have studied these in depth for my own interest and within my teaching career. Barrow people are community driven and welcoming, and their character is unique in so many ways. I want to capture all of this in the books I write. I’ve got a master’s degree in Creative Writing, and a post graduate diploma in regional and local history. I have six novels published with Bloodhound Books: Seaview House; The Cottage; Blackthorn Wood; Chapel Field; Halfmoon Lane and Cemetery Lodge.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2023I like anything set in England. I liked the way the cold and raw winter weather followed Evie's troubles and when things improved, so did the weather. It was suspenseful because there were a few characters who seemed to have a sinister personal agenda. This undercurrent of suspense followed throughout the entire story. Well done. I can't wait to read my other Paula Hillman book that's waiting for me in my Kindle.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2023A break from my usual genres of thrillers, mysteries, and horror and it was a great read. Perfectly paced with an excellent flow between the main plot and the romance bubbling below the surface of the main character, Evie and mysterious Jay. Will the lies wreck what could be a happily ever after or will it survive? Read the book and find out. I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2023Not a thriller in the true sense but enough intrigue that kept me guessing and wanting to read “just one more chapter”!
Liked the story line from the two main characters with such descriptive settings I felt very ingrained in the story.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books for my ARC and introducing me to another great author!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2023I enjoyed reading this suspenseful story. This is a newer author for me that I enjoyed how she brought the twists and turns to life. I found this book to be well written and hard to put down. A story that is full of action, suspense and characters that had me questioning what would happen next. They are strong characters that are connectable and added to the entertainment value of the story. This is an engaging story that you dont want to miss. A story that has great growth throughout that made the story easy to read. I really enjoyed this story. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A novel about secrets!
I love how Paula Hillman subtly peels away the layers of her story without the reader realising. Her characters are smart, funny but flawed, and Jay Elliot is about as flawed as they come! I adored the immersive setting of cosy but sometimes menacing countryside and the basic cottage with a backstory I could feel but not see straight away. The Cottage dragged me in and wouldn’t let me go until I’d finished the book!

I loved this book from start to finish. The main characters Evie and Jay, captivate your imagine. With the lovely descriptions of the local area to Tunnel cottage, you can well imagine the scenes. The explanations are spot on, so you feel as well as reading this well written book. Thanks Paula, look forward to your next novel
